Bob Dylan plays with his top two fingers out alot - away from the strings. Someone like Van Morrison uses them to mute the strings.

Sometimes I will use both techniques. It really depends on what I am playing. Like if I am playing G D Am but the other technique depends Like if im playing E G E A.

proper strumming on a guitar that's missing 2 strings? and there is no 'proper' way to strum.... it all depends on preference

what i meant by preference is that playing guitar (such as any other instrument) creates music. music is art and there is no way to "correctly" preform an art, for each piece of art is unique and different.
