They call them "shoving platforms" now, but to me they will always be cabooses. This one is in great shape. I caught a rail train that had a BN one on it, and the doors were plated over with steel :/ . It was graffitti covered on one side, but someone took spray cans and repainted the BN logo on.
The yard switcher in Emporia, KS uses one (Ce-8 # 999715) as a platform. It's in decent shape too.
Wow, not many places can you get a three train meet! That caboose was awesome, seems right at home! Last time I saw a caboose on a BNSF freight was March 2007 on the Bayard Subdivision in Manning, IA. I think they used it because the train backs up for a ways on that branch. Anyway, great catch!
They are used for backing up over crossings. I have been told they don't call them cabooses for that use. They have some new name for them. Most of the ones in use have been gutted inside.
I remeber as a toddler trains on the Chessie System had cabooses on all trains. They ran cabooses untill 1993. That same year all Chessie system locos became CSX official. i know this through experience and research.
In Lincoln,NE (where I live) theres a couple trains with a few cars that go through that always have a caboose, as someone mentioned, they are used for when theres backing up sometimes.

Great video, but scan around a little. I don't like staring at the same spot all the time.

Is BNSF 2199 and 2115 are GP38-2's, SD40'S or SD40-2's?

"I thought Caboose's (!?) were a thing of the past in American railroading. Very interesting video."
Cabooses are a thing of the past in the
US but there are still a very few of them
around sometimes used as a field office
for a work train etc. but not used for their
original purpose. This one did not look
like a work train but it could have been
being transported somewhere for that
purpose.
