  • melodie, ritme en harmonie

  • my father play n so on n on

  • Those black people in many cases talanted enough.

  • this my favorite piece

  • eye-opener....

  • the great Mr Jones. thank you

  • the very first album i ever bought on iTunes was Bop Redux/Groovin' High.

RIP Hank Jones. He was the definition of awesome.

  • What a fine man....RIP maestro

  • what documental is it? i need it please!

  • what an incredible musician!

his opinion on the elements of music is pretty debatable, though...

  • @devostm actually, any textbook you pick up will say the same thing: rhythm, harmony & melody~

  • @zulock not to start a flame war, but the "rhythm, harmony and melody" definition only applies to pre-19th Century Music. One doesn't have to like non-traditional musical works to still respect it as such.

  • Thank You. Enjoyed it....

  • when i first looked at his face i tought he wes morgan freeman xD

  • "if it lacks any of these things then its no longer music." i dont necessarily agree with that statement, but i still know hank's a total badass. RIP man.

  • 3:17 ... I'm 6

  • hahaha very cool video ty for upload, unfortiounately, i can hardly understand himxd he has a really crasy style of pronounciation, and he talks extremely fast when he had begun a sentence xDDD ( english is not my mother tounge ) but i could learn a lot about him though, thanks =)

  • What a giant of a musician and a sweetheart. Listen to him on Cannonball Adderly's album Something Else.

  • bebop on a slightly honky tonk piano lol great stuff

  • Every jazz fan's record collection must have a high percentage of Hank Jones performances in there, either as a leader or sideman.

Hank gave everything he was involved in that 'extra' quality. Aside from his beautiful playing the 'presence' he shows can be observed on any video with his wry smiles & occasional 'surprised' expressions.

A great & generous artist who will be missed.

Thanks so much for posting this.

  • What a fantastically clear and informative speaker! I know nothing about bebop and he speaks in a way i understand! Wonderful video.

  • Thank you for explaining that, because people out there are just playing garbage and calling it free form music and like you said it has no start or finish or melody. I can understand start in melody and going outside but some of these so called jazz musicians just start play line from now where. And really that's not the way the human mind thinks. You usually have to have some starting point

  • Mr. Jones is REAL and always simple. R.I.P.... Thank you for posting this video!!

  • What a class act and brilliant pianist.

  • Is this an excerpt from a longer documentary or something? if so, what is it?

    Thanks for posting it.

  • Hahaha, he's talking about how his whole family is musical, and he doesn't mention Elvin or Thad. That's funny.

  • Such a master! too bad he past away, he would have played at the middelheim festival in antwerp this week! May he rest in (bebop) peace!

  • this dude is a bad ass motherfucker

  • @frizzzzzzal a good one though

  • I just stumbled on this, I can't thank you enough...all the years of knowing OF this giant, watching those wonderful eyes just full of spirit, teaching, giving, you come away feeling you know this man and you love him. Thanks so much again.

  • Rest in peace, master Jones!

  • Wonderfully clear. I love Hank

  • Every time I hear Mr. Jones he amazes me. The thinking man's jazz pianist. His music is so "tasty."

  • Thanks Hank say hello to all those in Jazz Heaven

  • Yeah, he's extremely informative. I love when he said 'music consists of melody, rhythm, and harmony, and if it lacks any one of those three elements, then it's not music'. I'm going to remember that the next time I'm debating with someone about modern or post-modern music.

  • thank you Hank Jones for everything you've given us!

  • God Bless you Hank Jones. Rest In Peace.Only One left now...the great Barry Harris, Keeper Of The Flame Of Bebop. I pray more people listen to this wonderful music which is the legacy of Bird.

  • @budlives

    don't forget billy taylor.

  • Thank you for your music and mastery, Hank. RIP.

  • Thanks Hank R.I.P.

  • Wonderful stuff from the great Hank. Talking with him was always a like getting a little education. Goodbye to our old friend. You gave us all so much. Back to the Bluebird!

  • Outstanding pianist and human being.

  • rip hank jones-

  • r i p mr hank jones ..

  • Sadly, we're losing all of our great masters. Rest in peace, Hank; you were one of the very best.

  • RIP Hank..

  • R.I.P

  • We love you dear Hank and we never forget you. I think we could do a swingin' funeral for him. R.I.P.

  • R.I.P Mr. Jones!

  • Rest in peace Hank! Thanks for a wonderful performance at our festival last year and for your many contribution to this great music! While we will miss his beautiful touch, how fortunate we've been to have him "practicing" -- his word -- in our midst all these years.

  • I never heard of this guy before, but after watching a few of his videos, the dude was amazing!

    RIP Mr Jones

  • The last of the Jones Boys(Thad, Elvin, Hank) from Pontiac Michigan. All three got their starts at the Bluebird Lounge in Detroit. He will be missed. Thanx for the vid post.

  • hank jones passed away yesterday. just wanted to inform you guys :(

  • Great video, thank you so much for the post. I just found out Hank died yesterday, at the good old age of 91, after over 70 years of sharing his music. He was an extraordinary talent, prolific musician, and all around class act! )July 31, 1918 - May 16, 2010)

  • Genius !

  • This video was very interesting

  • Bebop is a derogatory name for this style of music.

  • Man, we need to get Hank Jones a piano that's in tune.

  • No he didn't say that there was neither melody, harmony nor rhythm in free jazz. He said that when any ONE of those is absent, it ceases to fit his concept of what music is.

Not only not a foolish statement, but a factually accurate one, since he qualified it by identifying it as "my concept of music."

Everyone has a concept of what music is. Hank told you his. You can have a different one, if you wish.

  • what is that ragtime sounding song he plays after orinthology

  • I think he's just improvising, having a wee jam. If I could, I certainly would too.

  • What a great video. He is so clear at 9o something!

  • How can you tell the piano is out of tune?

  • If you play it is quite easy to tell when a piano is quite out of tune. Some can tell when it's every so slightly out, even to a very minor degree. But when it's this out, it's quite obvious. I quite like it

  • lol - he's buried in all that mess but thinks so clearly

  • hank jonesssss YES!

  • They could have a least given Hank a piano that was in tune.

  • Its the one in his own house man, check out the surroundings.

  • But, the fact that he still sounds so incredible, even a piano so out of tune, perhaps heightens the respect.

  • "He thought that jazz was the work of the devil...he may have been right about that." Great quote from a fabulous musician.

  • A true master of the art.

  • What a superb video. Really appreciate that Hank explains things so clearly and completely. Respect!

  • Those videos are worth the gold

  • Precious and priceless..... Hank's the man forever...

  • Hank's concept is really simple and clear. He makes a complicated subject simple.

  • @Flextones that means he understands it!

  • Wow! Thanks, Hank.! What a gift!

  • Very interesting and insightful interview!

  • Killin!!

  • Happy 91st Hank,

Thanks for 50 years of inspiration and help. You are " The Man " as far as accompanying is concerned.

Loved your album with James Moody done last year.

    LOVE Respect and Thanks

  • I really like that interpretation of "How high the moon".

  • He's the very best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • July 31st - Happy 91 years Hank!

  • Isn't that "line"' simply the song 'Ornithology' by Charlie Parker?

  • Yes it was, to his point.

  • 3:19 hahahahah!

  • hahah

  • HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAH

  • so thats bebop.. i love it!

  • Yes ! This is at Hank's house. He has 2 pianos but no one is in tune ! Believe it or not !!! But it's so good to see and hear him at his home live !!! FABULOUS !!!!

  • I always felt that the complex modern altered chords disguise the out- of- tuneness, Only a freshly tuned grand will sound a traditional Triad nicely. Give me those camouflage chords any day.

  • of course i was being arrogant there, i apologise. and of course, hank is a great musician (his solo on 'autumn leaves' on cannonball's 'something else' is one of my favourites!) who was more important to the history of jazz than i could ever aspire to be. and of course a monument like him is entitled to have his (negative) opinion on free-jazz. but still... a foolish thing to say, hank. :)

  • Be bop ... is the thing. Nothing can compare. Period.

  • To all you shit talkers..WHEN you got half the knowledge of Hank Jones ill listen.....till then STFU!!

  • so there's no harmony, melody and rythm in the music of, say, cecil taylor? ornette? etcetcetc that's a foolish thing to say, hank.

  • Please shut up and let Hank speaks please ...

  • So wonderful

  • It is so great to hear a man like him speak in such a elaborate way about his music.

  • nice house...

  • No, he knows what he's talking about.

  • yeah....no he's not.

  • You would be so lucky to have a tenth of the improv skills of HJ.

  • is bebop really the fastest music in the world?

  • naturally played, yes, probably.

But things like Eurobeat and techno have it beat (lol) as the fastest music ever.

  • eurobeat and techno are no music are beat sound but not muicik or can you tell me the notes they play or the tempo not the bpm the tempo but is no music that thing you called electronic i like psytrance but i accept is not music

  • What a bitch.

  • Comment removed

  • metal

  • nah some hardcore bands are alot faster than metal

  • Great player. Shame about the piano tuner.

  • Hank Jones is the greatest Jazz pianist in the World ! Period ! And the way he taught to people what Bop is absolutely FABULOUS !!!! We want more !!!

  • We are so lucky-Hank is coming here to Tokyo this week! I am going to see him Friday Feb 20 at Blue Note-I am so happy to be able to see him!

  • Sólo necesito escuchar el piano para comprender que la musica es algo más que combinar notas musicales, sin "espiritu" no hay música... qeu viva el Jazz en todas sus categorias.

  • love the video, does hank not have a piano tuner? jesus

  • hmmm doesnt free music still have harmony....

  • This guy is way BA.

  • What a treasure! He was awarded a nationl arts medal yesterday

  • So this is pretty recent I would say, and he's now 90 years old. I don't think I've seen anyone that full of life at that age, seriously. God bless him! I don't know what he's eating, but I'll take some.

Really though, you have to stop and think about -- and appreciate -- what a living treasure this man is to our time...

  • haha, i didnt knwo ornithology is based on how high the moon

  • yup. contrafacts, my friend.

  • What a smart and congenial guy. This is the video that introduced me to him.

    Great stuff.

  • hank i love you but get your piano tuned dude!

  • Hey, you never know when you might need a Honk tonk.

  • friday night i get to see hank jones at birdland at the ripe age of 90. i can not wait

  • That line he plays on how high the moon, I always thought it was an Ella original, did anyone play it before her?

  • It's a Charlie-Parker-tune called 'Ornithology'. He recorded in 1946.

  • how high the moon is a really old tune played by a bunch of people. i believe it originated as a big band chart back in the 1930's as a dance tune. My grandpa used to dance to how high the moon all the time. haha

  • As time goes on and technology developes, people lose track of originals, (a copy can never be beter than the original) and now we find that all the new jazz, soul, rnb or what ever music that is played today, in my opinion, is a poor imitation of what what music really is, what music was ment for and what it should be..... This is music!

  • Amen

  • I agree that a copy never is "better" than the original, but do you think it's your choice what's music or not?

  • You will find that what i said isn't just the opinion of an indivdual but the state of alot of "music" today. I say this because the heart and the intent of music in Hank Jones' generation was purely to convey their heart upon certain matters, today alot of musicians perform to sell records to keep the record labels happy, so the "music" is churned out with simple melodies, simple lyrics and no real message. Theres a golf between music then and now, so i repeat, this is music!

  • Ah, this guy needs to speak to the rap/hip-hop generation. I love how he mentions, "To me, music consists of melody, rhythm, and harmony. If it lacks any one of those three elements, then it's not music." :D

  • Living history - Great

The video of his actual playing is useless. The produce trys to be "artsy" with his "blurred close-ups" at the keyboard. I would better appreciate seeing the entire keyboard.

    Interesting piece though. Thank you.

  • Melody, Rhytm, harmony!

  • tell ur boyfriend to take out his dick from your ears

  • your name is warriorprince, so im just gonna make a clichéd assumption that you spend a lot of time whacking off to lord of the rings and dont score too often and you're tryin to validate yourself by pretendin you know what human contact is like. get your fat ass off world of warcraft and stop listening to shred and try and learn to appreciate some real music.

    that is all.

    thanks.

  • ok, maybe some aspects of jazz (free jazz) are rife with chromaticism and dischord, but have you looked at the origins of jazz, from new orleans and dixieland big bands up to the cool jazz of the 50's? some jazz is horribly pretentious and frankly, shit, but its the type of genre you cannot bog into one catagory like that. and regarding emotion, have you ever looked at django rienheardt of louis armstrong playing? amazing emotion there...

  • Could you give us an argument of what you're saying? There is no music which produces "pretentious noise", as you say, if it's played well. I think you're just a man who thinks he can have the absolute truth about everything, but unfortunately, God didn't helped you about jazz...

  • and what do you think they do? They are expressing the suffering of their people. And there is a lot of jazz musicians that can play beautiful things alone (and even more in classical music, where the proportion of soloist tunes is enormous)

  • wow, that was an awfully ignorant statement.

  • warriorprince1010, does your opinion decide what's music or not?

  • Yes, because I am balanced.

  • @warriorprince1010 Give us some perspective: What music -do- you find to convey emotion, to tell a story, to -be- music, & why? What's the most recent recording you've purchased, the most recent concert you've attended?

  • @lazur1 Never mind. I went to your page. Maybe you're right: Jazz has too many chords, too many notes. You should should take it easy; stick with that one nice chord, & those 3 or 4 repeating notes.

  • @lazur1 Wow, comment from ages ago. Anything but jazz. I prefer British indie, Motown, opera, almost anything but jazz.

  • @war: You may not like jazz, but you DO like jazz musicians: Before a Motown Sound existed, those session players were JAZZ players, (as they continued to be on their own gigs). Barry Gordy obviously heard something in their jazz that he wanted in the Motown Sound. Of course, Motown isn't jazz, but it's also unlikely that the players changed their style very much: Producers don't hire musicians to NOT play the way he heard them play!

  • @warriorprince1010 Considering all the pussy a good jazz player gets, you should seriously contemplate getting yourself some bad breath.

  • @lazur1 Lol, I know Sinatra got alot.

  • @warriorprince1010 Read Charles Mingus' autobiography.

  • even a lot of serious jazz lovers have no clue who hank jones is unless they take note of who's playing piano behind the likes of sarah vaughn or ella, etc. (or they own that one miles davis album he appeared on.) a man of dignity, a latter-day teddy wilson.

  • It shows that the person who,s worried about the piano being tuned has missed the boat. it,s all about spirit of the music. I LOVE Hank Jones and his family.

  • Thanks for posting, man.

  • Great Post, Thanks a lot.

  • LOL.... to have that piano tuned would require removing all that mountain of clutter ...thats prolly why it don't get a good tuning! LOL - my mom was a packrat-LOL- and yep so am i- it's very endearing to see the beautiful mess of a beautiful man(and his lovely wife i presume) ...thanks for posting this

  • this is precious! what a beautiful man...it's funny how such a great player has an out-of-tune piano at home!

  • He was born in 1918, and still plays around the world like it's nothing, if you hear him play, he's the timemachine that shows you the peak of the jazz age, really, he takes you back. It truly saddens me that this generation of greats is slipping away, but that's life for you, but, they leave a musical legacy.

  • Hank Jones is truely one on the greatest!

He's brother of Thad Jones, trumpeter and band leader, and Alvin Jones, Coltranen's drumer. Truely piece of living history. Thanks

  • Good musicians needs a combination of insight and skill Hank Jones has both - this video just shows why he is so good!"Jazz is the devil" LOL

  • Melody.... Rhythm ...Harmony!

What a marvelous concept...too bad some of todays "noise" bands don't understand this!

  • Ironically, there is actually a "Noise Band" that goes by the name Hank Jones. I've run across some of their junk when trying to find actual Hank Jones music.

  • much thanks!

  • he makes that poor old piano sound like a million dollars!

  • That was awesome! Thank you so much for the post.

  • One of the greatest !!
