Okay, try this: Clark Kent is playing baseball for Smallville High School. He purposely hits a single so no one will know he's Superboy. He goes for home on another player's hit. The catcher has him dead to rights at the plate. He's gonna be tagged out. But then Clark decides to jump. He goes over the moon, and comes back down--never breaking the horizontal plane of the baseline--and lands on home plate. Is he still safe, even though he jumped over the moon?

I think the real question here is why is Superboy so stupid. also the rotation of the earth and its orbit around the sun would get in the way not counting the force of gravity on Superboy which would pull him out of the Y plane and cause him to be out.

@oaklandishh Thank you for your observations. The point I was trying to make is that the baseline is limited by three feet on either side of the line. It's not a vertical plane, as I understand it. The vertical plane of a football goal line makes sense, because it's the endline. It seems to me that the baseline should be defined both laterally and vertically by certain dimensions Whaddaya think?

I tend to think that the basepath is understood according to horizontal planes (length X width) , without consideration for the vertical plane. In football, crossing the vertical plane determines the score--but the vertical plane is an end line. The runner left the horizontal plane, and probably should have been called out. I think a rule clarificationby the gods of baseball is in order.

Totally legal. The basepath is a line that has a vertical plane, similar to a football end zone. Players have to stay along the path of the line. Height is irrelevant.

I am an umpire, and that is a completely legal way to try to avoid a tag. there is the three foot rule for the out of the baseline for you to be out. and he was not 3 feet out. check your rules before u talk. because obviously you dont know your rules

No you will not. During the Danville Braves vs. Elizabethton Twins game, one of our runners dodged a run down, was all the way at the end of the 3rd base dugout, and scored. You will not get called out if the umpire knows the game. The basepath is there for foul balls.
