HOW can you play that fast??? I try to play fast (It seems that I can play already fast but I can't pick the notes, if you know what I mean... I play guitar for like 2 years and I can't seem to find a way to shred. Any suggestion please?
Claus must get lots and lots and lots of vagina!!! It's a wonder he has time for guitar, let alone guitar teaching...Glad my Wife lives across the ocean from him!!! :0
@ljguitar91 When I'm not showing a lick, I'm improvising. Like in the "One string flying triplets video" But I guess you mean improvising over actual music right? :) I don't have any of those, but they will come! Thanks for commenting
@ljguitar91 Agree I'd like to see this guy putting his technical mastery in musical contexts. Because the aim of technique is to make music and I haven't seen this guy making music yet!
@wizardofshred do you think economy picking is faster than alternate? Guys like Di Meola and Steve Morse are alternate, and I don't think anyone plays faster
@flowerdrop1 To me there's no difference. The only technical diference is how you go from string to string. But I have found that alternate picking seems to work best for me when I'm playing an acoustic. It's easier for me to get an even flow of notes and have all the notes be equally loud. The little sweep from string to string tends to produce a little less sound from that first note on each new string, so I don't use economy picking very much when I'm playing the nylon string.
@boonec5 I believe it took them a week to arrive. But I'm on the other side of the globe so... Maybe they are manufacturing them when they get the order?
Thanks! I did my self. If you're only doing the fretboard it self, it's very easy to get a perfect result. If you're doing the entire neck it can be a bit challenging.
Yes. But then shortly after I apply the lacquer I remove it from the actual fretwire by stroking them with a finger. Then I remove the lacquer from my finger and stroke once again until it's all gone. If there's something left after that, it will fall of and disappear when you play the guitar. It's really very easy to get a perfect result in this department : ) I've performed this operation 10 times and the first result was as good as the last.
The key is to not go too deep when you scallop the neck. I can't hear any difference in sound but if you go too deep your neck will become a little uncomfortable to play. When you slide your fingers up the fretboard the hit the steep "hills" that you've created. So scallop the whole neck and don't take off too much. Sand down a couple of frets to see the finished result (The sanding will remove a bit of the wood too) then you can take of some more if you like.
But don't be afraid of doing it. If you take your time and check your work often, you can't go wrong. As I said I'e scalloped 10 guitars and they all turned out very well :)
thanks man, now I have only one more question. When economy picking, isn't it complicated to know when you are for example ending with a down stroke, so you can continue on the next string below. How do you know before doing a lick, that you are able you go to the next string using economy picking?!
When you are practicing these techniques you are of course very conscious of when you do what. But as you practice more and more licks and sequences using the best or easiest picking technique you have available, your brain will automatically choose the path of least resistance. Your playing will end up being fractures of patterns that you've practiced using either alternate or economy picking. So your brain will use the techique that fits the pattern (Sequence or lick)
The key is to explore each technique and be curious enough to figure out what special advantages it gives you over other techniques. Once you've learned alternate picking it wont be too hard to learn economy picking as well. But most people consider their choice of technique a matter of religion, and so they limit themselves thinking "This is better than that" Don't make that mistake. It limits the amount of fun you have radically, as you know : )
Freaking intense...thats how kids nowadays should put their ADD and ADHD to use...lol.
Very clean technique...I'm still waiting to hear your flawless technique used in real playing situations not just licks and runs...but no worries, I have faith.
I'd like to play the guitar like you !!! my technique is very hard , i think because i only use alternate picking , anyway your techinque is the best for me!! :-)

the scallops must be from all the shred. if you sand in the neck you'll find burnt in old strings.

AMAZING SHREDDING! How did you get your guitar neck lacquered?
epiphonejamfreak 2 years ago
Thanks! I did my self. If you're only doing the fretboard it self, it's very easy to get a perfect result. If you're doing the entire neck it can be a bit challenging.
wizardofshred 2 years ago
but when you are lacquering the neck, are you also lacquering the frets themselves? or only the wood on the fretboard?
epiphonejamfreak 2 years ago
Yes. But then shortly after I apply the lacquer I remove it from the actual fretwire by stroking them with a finger.
