loghain simply was protecting his daughter's place in ferelden. the Arl, was suggesting to King Cailin that he have her removed because she wasnt making any babies. loghain wanted to protect his own rights and decided to kill off the king and the Arl. But is he insane? did he know the blight would spread all over ferelden? if that guy didnt kill all the couslands maybe he would have gotten away with it. but, the idiot started killing nobles and taking all their badges early on.
this game is simply one of the top 3 games ive ever played. the only game ive finished 4 times while its usually 2 max. its amazing in so many ways. itll be my favorite till DAIII comes out. then well see))
Cailan maybe insane with his "glorious moment" and Loghain is an asshole, but they all played a great part making this scene one of the epic-greats in gaming.

I was SO pumped up to finish all the quests and kill him, you have no idea.
Maybe loghains goals are really good FOR Ferelden.... but these gaols cannot justify what he have done. cailan, duncan, civil war. he tried to get rid of the wardens, the only ones who know how to slay the demon. you can say he didnt know about what could REALLY happen if he success. but i cant say he tried to learn about that.

Return to ostagar(after looking at some comments saying bla bla about people saying duncans alive/dead) hes dead, you have to kill the ogre that killed him and u get both of his weps
@blackhawkwm I believe that particular part is heard in the Party Camp song that loops in the background while you go about your business in the camp.
everytime I see this I imagine how much it would have had to suck to be back in the middle ages or before and realizing that not only has your side lost the battle but that you are one of the last remaining soldiers and you look up to see a big army charging to kill *you*
An effective tactic would have been to lay out more wooden stakes as barricades and traps in front of the soldiers. Then they should have dug holes in a horizontal row and put giant balls of hay in them. When the darkspawn got close enough they should use their first volley as fire arrows to burn the darkspawn. Then they could have used further volleys to weaken the enemy's frontlines.
I hate how logain just lets the king and all these people get slaughtered and then tries to be the hero by saying it was all their own fault they got killed. The reinforcements would have been able to surround the whole horde and crushed them from both sides in that confined space. If the arch demon was with the horde it would be the rational choice, but if he is supposedly some uber badass veteran he would know this. This character's motivations through out the whole story make no sense.
@jigglypiggly Since when does pure numbers equal an automatic victory(take Ternopylhae for example where the greeks actually defended the pass for a week) especially when attacking such a defensible position like Ostagar? At the very least the darkspawn would have been beaten back that night.
@morais691alexandre Sorry, I'm going by what was said by the King's Confident in the DLC, what I saw and heard occur during the battle, and what I saw during the course of the game.
A majority of the army at Ostagar was defeated in a highly defensible location, Loghain's force, from those that were on screen, possessed only a large battalion or small regiment, no where near enough to stem the tide.
It took a combined army of Dwarves, Elves, Mages, and humans to win at Denerim.
@jigglypiggly The confidant was saying that victory was impossible at Ostagar, true, but that doesnt mean it was imidiate. Victory was also impossible for the greecks in termophylae yet they fought back the persian horde twice before being overwelmed.Resisting that night would have aloowed them to retreat. And Loghain had the bulk of the army at least thats what it said the last time I read the wiki, i mean just the screen time it has shows it was a more numerous force than Cailan's.
@morais691alexandre The Battle at Thermopylae is greatly exaggerated to the point of mythology.
Had the fought on open ground, they would have been slaughtered in seconds.
They picked a small pass, and they had better soldiers, numbers did not mean anything, and they still fell for the oldest trick in the book, the flanking attack.
@jigglypiggly So? The darkspawn here are also attacking by a narrow "pass" forced by the fortifications and the terrain. And the Greecks in termophylae were able to learn about the incoming attack and retreat most of the troops leaving only the Spartans and thespians to hold the enemy in place, how is that falling for the trick?
@jigglypiggly What? the Spartans did have a rear guard, it were soldiers from Argo if im not mistaken that started fleenig as soon as they saw the enemy. Puff, cop out. guess what, saying that your right just because doesnt make you right, it just weakens your position. Debating 101. Victory was not possible at Ostagar( Not in the sense of destroying the horde) but most of the army would have been saved if Loghain had grown a pair and attacked.
@jigglypiggly If he had attacked and beaten back the darkspawn with the blunt of the army, retreat would have been possibel. i mean darkspwan really advance slowly when they dont have the Archdeamon leading them.
@jigglypiggly As for the rest, the dalish are very few in number, same goes for the Dwarven warrior caste, the mages are a grand total of 12 after that little demon problem and the human army was just the soldiers from the county of Redicliffe so thats a moot point.
@morais691alexandre Enough to cut the head off of the attack, if you watched the march to Denerim, there are hundreds upon hundreds of Dwarves marching, same with the Dalish, same with the Redcliffe soldiers. The one's present in the final battle that you can call are only a small representative of the actual amount. For example, the Golems seen if you keep the Anvil number 20-30, yet in the end-game you only get 4.
@jigglypiggly I talked only about the mages, i know that the other allies you can call upon are more numerous, that they number in hundreds each...but once again that is still a paltry number.
@jigglypiggly PS: it doesnt even make sense for Loghain to have a smaller force strategically, besides how could he hope to efend all of Ferelden with a single battallion? I'm going with the wiki.
@morais691alexandre It was all they had, Loghain did not want the Legion of Grey Warden Chevaliers to reinforce them, nor did anyone seem to want to enlist the help of the dwarves, elves, or wait for Eamon. A massive blunder for all parties involved.
@jigglypiggly but i do wonder why Loghain wouldnt accept the Orlesians help and put them in the front line to take the brunt of th damage. i mean that would fufill all of his purposes. Just paranoid I guess.
If this was at the end of the game after you are the ultimate grey warden and you can easily take on tons of darkspawn it would have been awesome as well.
I dont really think Loghain wanted the king to die (like when you talk to guard outside Loghains tent, the guard actually said that Loghain insisted the king to reconsider the attack). From background, Loghain is a master tactictian so he would not want a "suicide" charge. King calin though awesome, is equal to blame as he's foolish and unrealistic.
@freaktong He did it because he knew that they couldn't win the battle, so he had to retreat. He sacrificed the king, because he thought that he could defend ferelden with his army. I think at least =P
@Icedrake201 And its bull. =). Its all bullshit made up by Loghain to make him look better. The Darkpawn would at the very least been beaten back that nigh if he had attacked even if the horde wasnt destroyed. He wanted the King dead. Period.
Why does everyone keep saying Duncan survived? He's about as dead as you can get without them actually showing his face getting sliced in half with that axe >_>
I mean, he's on his knees, injured, unarmed, with a whole army of Darkspawn running towards him...and people think just because his exact second of death wasn't shown he's somehow perfectly fine -.-
@Nintendoggy Agreed, man. If you got the DLC, it autoconfirms that Duncan is INDEED dead, along with his sword n dagger being obtainable. And Cailan finally gets a badass funeral that he definitely deserved.
I'm usually good at guessing what will happen next in rpg games, since many r a bit generic and repetitive. However, dragon age was a different story, i was always surprised with things. Callan's death, a party member's betrayal, the ultimate sacrifice... Beautiful game, i'm hoping for a sequel
Did anyone else realise Loghain would do this pretty much the minute they saw him bent over that map? :D
He has "SHIFTY" written on his face in capital letters - he reminds me a lot of Grima Wormtongue in the LotR movies (Saruman's assistant), that same pale face and slimy look.
Why the King and everyone else trusted him is a bit of a mystery >_>
@hermanJnr112 What the...have you even played out the game?
Because he's an amazing general that has saved Ferelden before. Beside the fact he was Cailan's mentor. He did that not because of some power thirst, he thought it a necessary sacrifice for Ferelden's future.
Holy @#$@ pple im not even kidding!!! you wana watch and hear the most epic thing in the history of the whole entire world? watch this and "Dragon Force-where the dragons rule." greatest most epic thing in the history of GOD!!!!!!!!
Actually Cailian had like the third best armor in the game, you can recover when you go back to Ostagar and moost of his troops where Grey Wardens that had excelent armor and weapons besides being professional Darkspawn killers, the only thing they lacked that Loghains troops had was helmets, most Grey Wardens dont use them...no idea why.
@VympelTrainee Most of King Cailan's troops were Gray Wardens and soldiers from other Banns, Teyrns and Arls (Except Arl Eamon and Arl Howe) and those were most likely as you said drafted farmers because the feudal system which Ferelden runs on didn't have a standing army.
@VympelTrainee This was a huge collection of armies. Many territories privatized their military, meaning that every soldier provided their own weapon and armor. One such example is the Army of Redcliffe. You can see in the final battle that they have different weapons and armor.
@VympelTrainee Because Loghain's troops are the Fereldan army and Cailan's troops are a combination of Grey Wardens and the private armies of various Banns, Arls and Teyrns.
Okay people time to get something straight with you. Duncan is DEAD! So what if you can't find his body, the fact remains he is never seen again and never will be. If you call me a name because I said this I don't care, face facts people.
@jigglypiggly Even if they hadnt won they would undoubtly have been able to push the Darkspawn back (It would have been like the spartans in termophylae, they never defeated the persians but they pushed them back to camp 2 times)considering they had the bulk of the army in reserve. Then they could have retreated and fight again i another place withouth killing off so many men.
Yeah, the main character's mentor always die in the first important scene or soon after. ALWAYS. Otherwise he/she is revealed to be the Real Bad Guy later in the plot. Think about Baldur's Gate or Jade Empire, for example.
Well still, what Cailan should have done was place traps and barriers around Ostagar, when all the traps were gone, send the dogs, when the dogs die, get the men ready to have the darkspawn charge into them and their defences (assuming Cailan had some brains to put some in) . That would have made each of his troops worth 10 Darkspawn. But he had to charge, Idiot.
2. It's a Medieval fantasy game without mounted knights. In Medieval times, the only professional soldiers were the mounted nobles (knights). Since these aren't present in Dragon Age, the only remaining part of Medieval soldiers remains. These were largely just farmers who had been given a weaopn by their lords.
1. Fereldan was the least civilised nation in Ferelden. It is mentioned in a codex page that some scholars even doubt Fereldans claim to civilization. It largely consists of small banns (landy holds), and those are made up of almost only farms.
Is it just me, or does the KINGS army look a little... well. It looks like an army of miltia not soliders with a ton of recources. And his plan was doomed to fail, a simple flank wouldn't work, Cailan is stupid.
Cailan was indeed stupid, he underestimated the Darkspawn, going to battle with a very small army, he did not recruit the dwarves and dalish to his battle, also he did not wait for Redcliff and the gray wardens of Orlais.
It is hinted in the game somewhere that even if Loghain would not desert, they would still lose in Ostagar, therefore it means Loghain really saved many lives from Cailan's foolishness.
Duncan dies ='[ he could of owned them after all he did own an ogre all on his own and that is one tough SOB in the dlc and why didnt loghain charge they could of proper beat them all with his help
David Gaider, the lead writer, explained in a forum that Loghain truly believed the battle was impossible to win. He also believed that the Wardens were responsible for the King's death because of how Cailan went on and on about how glorious it is to go into battle with them, therefore filling his head with nonsense and made him more eager to fight an "impossible" battle.
Also he tried numerous times to convince Cailan to not fight. But in the end, he retreated because in one of the Dragon Age books, he promised Maric that he would not make one man more important than Fereldan.
Because he was a megalomaniac who wanted to rule Ferelden because of his never ending hatred for Orleians who King Cailan was willing to ally with to help against the darkspawn horde. He was also skeptical about the Grey Wardens and didn't believe they were the only ones who could destroy the Archdemon.

I mean, he's on his knees, injured, unarmed, with a whole army of Darkspawn running towards him...and people think just because his exact second of death wasn't shown he's somehow perfectly fine -.-
hermanJnr112 1 year ago 35
@hermanJnr112 you never know could have became a ghoul at that moment seeing as he was one of the most oldest grey wardens.
jessebrown1996 1 year ago
@hermanJnr112 It's wish-thinking. He was such an amazing person and it was a shame he died so early.
Nintendoggy 1 year ago
@Nintendoggy Agreed, man. If you got the DLC, it autoconfirms that Duncan is INDEED dead, along with his sword n dagger being obtainable. And Cailan finally gets a badass funeral that he definitely deserved.
AlucardHellsing97 10 months ago
hermanJnr112 :I think its too brutal death for character like Duncan and thats why they "censored" it if you know what i mean.

I think Duncan survived or was corupted.Maybe you will see him in a DLC maybe in a DLC named "Return of a friend".

Why the King and everyone else trusted him is a bit of a mystery >_>
hermanJnr112 1 year ago
@hermanJnr112 What the...have you even played out the game?
Because he's an amazing general that has saved Ferelden before. Beside the fact he was Cailan's mentor. He did that not because of some power thirst, he thought it a necessary sacrifice for Ferelden's future.

How come Loghains troops all look like proper soldiers while cailian and his troops had crappy armor and were most likely just drafted farmers
VympelTrainee 1 year ago 19
@VympelTrainee
Cailin was recruiting every able body to serve. Loghain's men were all soldiers.
incinerator950 1 year ago
they are gray wardens all of em down there except cailian they wore there own personal armor
lilfozzy12 1 year ago
@VympelTrainee probably they put the weak soldiers first so they could flank with heavy armored troops
ityr 1 year ago
@VympelTrainee
Actually Cailian had like the third best armor in the game, you can recover when you go back to Ostagar and moost of his troops where Grey Wardens that had excelent armor and weapons besides being professional Darkspawn killers, the only thing they lacked that Loghains troops had was helmets, most Grey Wardens dont use them...no idea why.
morais691alexandre 1 year ago
@morais691alexandre those soldiers werent grey wardens they were just normal soldiers
DerekIsCool986 1 year ago
@DerekIsCool986 yes they were. Go to the Dragon Age wiki and type in ostagar.
morais691alexandre 1 year ago
@VympelTrainee Most of King Cailan's troops were Gray Wardens and soldiers from other Banns, Teyrns and Arls (Except Arl Eamon and Arl Howe) and those were most likely as you said drafted farmers because the feudal system which Ferelden runs on didn't have a standing army.
KingMalthas 1 year ago
@VympelTrainee it was because Loghain hogged all the good stuff and Cailian just didnt care
Nearazeroxx 1 year ago
@Nearazeroxx A 'Leroy Jenkins' moment anyone?
CalicoVall 1 year ago
@VympelTrainee This was a huge collection of armies. Many territories privatized their military, meaning that every soldier provided their own weapon and armor. One such example is the Army of Redcliffe. You can see in the final battle that they have different weapons and armor.
copdrop6 1 year ago
@VympelTrainee cailan's just a little boy they wont let him command real armies :P
HellTr00per 1 year ago
@VympelTrainee Because Loghain's troops are the Fereldan army and Cailan's troops are a combination of Grey Wardens and the private armies of various Banns, Arls and Teyrns.

Even if Loghain had not retreated they would have lost. Look at those torches. Way too many. Loghain and the king's confident reveal this in RTO.
jigglypiggly 2 years ago 3
@jigglypiggly Even if they hadnt won they would undoubtly have been able to push the Darkspawn back (It would have been like the spartans in termophylae, they never defeated the persians but they pushed them back to camp 2 times)considering they had the bulk of the army in reserve. Then they could have retreated and fight again i another place withouth killing off so many men.
morais691alexandre 1 year ago
Oh and to those that think Duncan lived the battle, it wouldn't matter, he'd be killed either by the Taint or the Horde marching north.
laxbeastboy 2 years ago
Tamlen from the Dalish origin was also thought dead, almost a year later they come across him still alive, he has the plague but he IS still alive.
Perhaps the same thing could have happened to Duncan.
standardpack 2 years ago
Yeah, the main character's mentor always die in the first important scene or soon after. ALWAYS. Otherwise he/she is revealed to be the Real Bad Guy later in the plot. Think about Baldur's Gate or Jade Empire, for example.
AntithesisOfFlesh 2 years ago

I guess that does it :P
Bull3pr00f 2 years ago
@laxbeastboy
quite simple. few reasons for that:
1. Fereldan was the least civilised nation in Ferelden. It is mentioned in a codex page that some scholars even doubt Fereldans claim to civilization. It largely consists of small banns (landy holds), and those are made up of almost only farms.
Bull3pr00f 2 years ago
Is it just me, or does the KINGS army look a little... well. It looks like an army of miltia not soliders with a ton of recources. And his plan was doomed to fail, a simple flank wouldn't work, Cailan is stupid.
laxbeastboy 2 years ago
@laxbeastboy
yes you are right.
K4zKyzah 2 years ago
@K4zKyzah
though they may of still stood a chance and prevented a civil war
they should of waited for redcliffe and gathered more resources
prehaps brang more wardens

David Gaider, the lead writer, explained in a forum that Loghain truly believed the battle was impossible to win. He also believed that the Wardens were responsible for the King's death because of how Cailan went on and on about how glorious it is to go into battle with them, therefore filling his head with nonsense and made him more eager to fight an "impossible" battle.
wtbriann 2 years ago
Also he tried numerous times to convince Cailan to not fight. But in the end, he retreated because in one of the Dragon Age books, he promised Maric that he would not make one man more important than Fereldan.
wtbriann 2 years ago
Because he was a megalomaniac who wanted to rule Ferelden because of his never ending hatred for Orleians who King Cailan was willing to ally with to help against the darkspawn horde. He was also skeptical about the Grey Wardens and didn't believe they were the only ones who could destroy the Archdemon.
