Sally also did a radio promo for the show that was incredible. It started out with her saying that the "Youth Movement" was in- the promo then had her appealing to the youths of various schools to join in by watching her show. She would cite by name specific schools in the radio station's listening and mention the local ABC affiliate. It's an amazing piece of promotion and Sally is just as irresistable on radio as she is in television!
I was 4 years old when Gidget went on the air in '65 but I still remember wanting to be Gidget when I grew up. I love all the old movies and the books and everything.
That backdrop at the beginning can also be seen on A.B.C.'s 1965 Fall Preview ("Seven Wonderful Nights") which had the previews of "Gidget", "The Big Valley", and the season premiere of "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" all in color (the entire show was in B&W).
I love this show! I'd never even heard of this show until I saw it on Comcast on demand. Now I've watched all the episodes they have on there and am always looking for new ones to be added. I wish it had been on longer then one season. I would have loved to watch it when it was originally on if I had lived back in that time (born in the 80s).
Glad to see there's some on here so I can watch them. I think Nick @ Night should put them on!
Check out the one on another show that premiered on the same network the very same season as "Gidget" ("The F.B.I."), which had Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. driving one out of the Justice Department building, a G.T.289 convertible, which didn't sell well, but remains one of the most charismatic and most collectable Mustangs ever built..
Too bad they cancelled this show after one season. I was watching them last year at 2:30 am(Chicago) but they took it off the air before I could see most of them.
This promo aired in the late summer of 1965 (in color), before the show premiered on Wednesday, September 15th, following "THE PATTY DUKE SHOW" at 8:30pm(et). Competition from CBS' "THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES" and NBC's "THE VIRGINIAN" forced the show to move to Thursdays at 8pm(et) in January 1966, right after "BATMAN". But "GILLIGAN'S ISLAND" on CBS and "DANIEL BOONE" on NBC had more viewers, and ABC decided to cancel the show after one season, despite a spike in the ratings that summer...
I re-discovered the show about 25 years ago. I thought it was good. I'm surprised they canceled it after 1 season. Comcast runs the episodes on demand.

@belladeballe I was thirteen at the time and experienced my first orgasm jerking off to Gidget.

How about that? Gidget debuted the same night as Green Acres. Thank God that they weren't up against each other. (Green Acres came on at 9.)

Stay tuned for Gidget, NEXT, IN COLOR!
Everyone wanted LaRue's car!
What a great show, I wish Nick @ Night would run them again...
