I remeber catching this on late night TV. The horrible band that won was called 2 Skinny J's. Seeing the Toadies on that show started me off on the whole local (Dallas) music thing, which I am still addicted to.
Todd with a mustache. Ha. At that UTA battle of the bands, Elysian Fields had a fancy light show - and they still got their asses kicked by the Toadies. Mr. Mayo - I've been wondering if you're still around......
I had this on VHS for a long time! Caught it on late night TV... Also saw them win the Fort Worth area battle at the University of Texas at Arlington vs. New Texicans, Elysian Fields and some other band. Also, this WAS part of an MTV Battle of the Bands thing. I think it was between late '90 and '91--somewhere in there.
Hey, it's Charles Mooney III, the guitarist. It actually was Hollywood. It was a competition sponsored by Yamaha for the best unsigned bands. We're using Yamaha equipment because, if we used it, we got to keep it. We didn't win but we did get a high level rep from Yamaha drunk and got them to agree to let us ship the drums back to Texas. The other big event at this was Lisa was pickpocketed right on Hollywood Blvd. Good times!!
My junior high band sent a tape in for this contest, and of course heard nothing. I did get a lot of Yamaha junk mail, though. Caught this on late-night TV by accident w/ my big sister, who said, "At least one cool band got in the contest. That bassist is awesome!" Didn't some fake-ass white reggae band win? We were pissed!
Wow! You remember that?! You're right, a white reggae/funk band won. At that time, the Chili Peppers had released Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik so funk was the popular thing. But we didn't take these contests too seriously. I remember we made up stuff for our bio for this contest. We had them believing we were big Star Trek fans and our name came from William Shatner. We claimed we were thrown out of a line waiting for Shatner's autograph, with Shatner yelling "What a bunch of Toadies!" at us.
WHOA, Todd has a MUSTACHE!

Someone in the band could possibly weigh in on this but I'm pretty sure this was either filmed in NYC or LA.

a few guesses -
A) the Aardvark
B) the Axis Club
C) Ridglea Theater
but, I think its the Axis Club - it didnt stay open long. I think it was early '90s. I didnt see them until 1992 @ Madhatter's, FW.
