Saw him two days ago. The guy was UNBELIEVABLE... Right in front of me, with an indian hat, awesome voice, just all about feeling !!!! Just incredible... Amazing band (Paul Nelson - guitar, Scott Spray - bass, Vito Liuzzi - drums)...
This is Johnny in his prime - the version i saw him do on the pier in '80 in nyc - i will never forget - like on the captured live album - he did this strumming after he says "check this out" and his arm was moving up and down so fast it was a blur from over his head to down to his knees - it was so incredible that you could hear individual notes in addition to the strumming (only Winter). People were jumping up so high and going crazy they were falling thru the bleachers
yea i have been listening to captued for years and its a thrill to see this footage. This was johnnys best band. better than the live with derrenger. Floyd radford is indredible. could have played lead in any of the bands of this era. EASY !
Just watching Floyd jumping around like that during the whole song put me out of breath...Great great memories, i used to own the LP back in the days and couldn't believe how good Floyd was. Winter at his best, energy, great guitar duels and lots of balls..Thanx for sharing
have Johnny to thank for introducing us white boys from new jersey to the blues with "johnny winder and live" in the early 70's. After that, it was early fleetwood mac with peter green, SRV, chuck berry, buddy guy, and finally, the "best" there ever was and ever will be, rory gallagher, who played like a man possessed with a blues demon.
Just to turn you guys onto some really good jams.....search Robin Trower Too Rolling Stoned but check out the one he did a few years ago. He looks like the Sesame Street Muppet Bert, but the ole boy can still jam as you will see if you scope it out..Excellent, close up finger work tooo.............good, clean, clear vid!
ZBB.
What a great video. Some of my best memories of my life were watching Johnny, Edgar and the rest. Man could they play loud too. Back in the days, if you got there early, a lot of shows were general admission. I got down in front more than once to see these guys and couldn't hear for the rest of the week LOL. Absolute Bliss!
Saw this show in Houston and the enterplay between Johnny and Floyd was one of the best live duals I've ever seen. Both killer players and Johnny just appeared to be having a blast.
I pretty much wore out my Captured Live LP and was later able to find it on CD. Really enjoyed seeing this concert clip! That Floyd Radford was a really good guitarist to be able to share a stage with Johnny!
@GreatGardenGnome I agree on that. Floyd Radford are really showing it all here, how it's gonna be. But as U wrote, The And-line up comes in front of it. Derringer and Caldwell skilled musicians of their own quality...
I saw him in Providence and he had the hat. He sat on the drum stand and played a long solo. I was in the second row. The opening act was Montrose, with Sammy Hagar singing. I think Dr. Hook followed, then Johnny.
This video may be earlier than 1976. In 76 both he and Edgar were touring together onstage. Here we see Edgar at the mixing board. I remember seeing them at the Lakeland Civic center in Florida in 76. When they finished their encore, Edgar tried to get Johnny (who was shirtless) to leave the stage. But Johnny kept a lead guitar solo going. The band walked away. Crowd loved it! They made up for a show they cancelled at Tampa stadium that had included, Jethro Tull (Tullivision) and Robin Trower.
No, Mr. Terrible, you're wrong, you and all fans of that Negro music, absorbed and refined by the English oh the proper English, then re-absorbed back into America with a freaky BRIGHTwhite guitarist, & another freak, half Cherokee, half Negro guitarist exploding bounds of art, NO, you all are NOT THE REAL AMERICA!
I am. I won. Victory of the Kulturkampf is mine, ALL MINE. Isn't that right JEdgar HOOVER? Agree or I'll arrest you.
great great video. I have to correct one of the earlier posts. "Bony Moronie" ain't on "Second Winter". It was on "Saints & Sinners". sorry, it's the accountant in me.
"Bony Moronie" was on the SECOND WINTER album; one of Johnny's best. Also I must disagree with a poster who called Johnniy a "rock n' roller". The man could and did play rock and roll throughout his career for sure, but he was first and foremost a blues guitarist (and an incredible slide player). Listen to his first two albums: PROGRESSIVE BLUES EXPERIMENT and JOHNNY WINTER; solid 100 percent blues...
I had a chance to see this show at the Philly spectrum-Johnny you are the greatest. I waited out back where the limousine came out and it stopped in front of me. I reached my hand in and told Johnny he was the best. He shook my hand and said"thanks man". so humble
Awesome, Johnny Winter is one of the greatest and best Rock 'n Roll - live performer ever - specially on this captured live tour. His absolute precise picking and his amazing sound is incredible. Unfortunatly I have only the Captured Live LP/CD only.
Saw him many years later, life here in Volkshaus Zurich, it blows me the head away.
I've known Johnny for 24 years and he's a great guy and a good honest down to Earth person. Never knew Randy, but I have friends who knew him and they all said he was a real nice guy. Maybe you caught him in a bad mood which we all get in now and then or maybe it was the dope. If you met him the next night you might have had a different impression of the guy. By the way Johnny is clean now and tearing it up again like he used to.
Oh I'm sure he was a nice guy. He just gave me a bad impression of himself that night. Sorry to hear that he's dead. You know, its funny you should mention Johnny and Randy's heroin addiction. i just got the dvd "Johnny Winter Live through the 70s" and there is a scene where Johnny and a bunch of other people are sitting around passing a joint. Johnny specifically speaks out against drugs. My guess was he was probably doing heroin at the time.
Where did this footage come from???..does the poster have the whole concert??? i saw Johnny Winter on 2 consecutive shows during this tour. Met them at the hotel afterwards. Floyd Radford and Randy Jo Hobbs were assholes. Johnny staggered into the hotel lobby with a half full bottle of jack daniels. He stopped to talk to me a minute. I still have the holiday inn towel he threw off stage during one of those shows. Man i gotta have this video.
He problaby wouldn't be an asshole if he was my cousin either. Unfortuantely I didn't know him. I only met him that one night and he was an asshole. Maybe if i had the chance to get to know him better, my attitude about him would change. Floyd Radford was an asshole too. Richard Hughes just avoided me but he didn't look at me like i was "imposing" on him like Randy and Floyd did.
Well, at that time, Johnny and his manager , Teddy Slatus Imposed Randy right out of the band because he could not handle his heroin habit, he didn;t get the treatment as Johnny did. If Randy seemed to be an asshole, then it was all the heroin, he really wasn't like that. Richard is dead as well and Radford works for Lockheed Areospace
The 2nd guitar on this tour was Floyd Radford from Orlando. He put out one of the best power trio LP's of the 70's with two buddys called "Tin House"!!! Pick it up if you can find it(though I think it was just put out on cd)you won't be dissapointed! It rocks very hard! Floyd was underrated exept for Johnny who picked him for a tour and Edger for a couple LP's! Thanks for sharing and posting these videos!!!
flotd radford could have played lead in any 70's rock band of his day. he is featured on captured live. he does tons of kick ass leads and allows johnny to do crazy rythum work. then radford tries to upstage johnny with his rythums. floyd radford is just a great guitar player and thats that..
Just to comment"clear the air" the first 3 solo's are his 2nd guitarist. I love Johnny but give everybody credit who should get it.There is a live Steve Still's half electric/acoustic and his second guitarist takes the first solo on "wooden ships" that is fantastic. Stills solo starts with him on a wah pedal.Just saying these guys would showcase everybody that deserved to be.Saw Albert Collins in SF in around '90 and he made sure the opening bands guitarist got to sit in with him. Nice guy
I used to go to Atlanta Ga To see Johnny every time he came. A few times in the Omni and once at the Municiple Auditorium around 73,74 ,Man to see him do Johnny B Goode and Jumpin Jack Flash live was fantastic. Whats even better is my son 21 and a guitar player now and a big JW fan. He got a turntable for XMAS we broke out the ol Captured Live album and rocked out ,it bout brought tears to my eyes.
I really think there should be a great push to try to get JW into the hall of Rock and Roll. I think he is already in the Blues Hall of Fame. The Man is always touring and playing. He is the essential Rock and Roll and Blues Guitar player. He is just getting better and better as the years go by. Listen to his version of Red House. It is smoking
I wouldn't want to degrade the great Johhny Winter by putting him along side some of the sub-par musicians currently in RRHF. Most great musicians know he's one of the very best among the small handful of elite guitarists in history. He's fine right where he is.
Undeniably the best album of 1976!!! This one was literally scorched into my brain through repeated listenings while cranking the speakers up to eleven!!!
You're soooo right! This has to be one of the three guitar ultra freakout discs of all time! ANY guitarhead NEEDS this record. Worth the price for Highway 61 and Sweet Papa John alone!
It's worth the price for Sweet Papa John by itself. That is one of the most mind-blowing kick as solos ever recorded. And you are right: if you're a serious rock/blues guitarist, you should never not have this record. Every minute of it is priceless.
Amen! ALSO worth the price for Highway 61 Revisited. Just incredible. Guitar freaks, do yourselves a favor: find this record and put it into permanent rotation!
1976 seems to have been a really good year for Johnny, as his music appears to have been really together and him on a performance peak, which also is evident from his Captured Live! (1976). In my opinion, his best album ever, and i never get tired of it...
We saw Johnny earlier this month (8-14-08) and I gotta say, We've been following you around since 1970 and "Thanks for being the best and thanks for autographing my guitar". FUCKIN' "A" !!!!!
I grew up with this guy. At the time of this video Floyd Radford (guitar) was 24 years old. He first came to play with the "Winters" at the age of 17 years old as a guitar player in a warm up act Tin House. After having a breakdown he decided to go to college. His wife Sandy of 15 years supported him while he went thru college. Shortly after his graduation he divorced her. He is an engineer for a defense company in Florida. He plays in a church band and local bars in Central Florida.
I was just giving a little history on the guy (Floyd Radford)since this video. He is still one of the best guitar players out there. The locals miss the old Floyd and wish he would play more rock and blues and less church music.
Oh Johnny, time to come back to Texas ,we miss you. Whats Edgar doing lurking back there ? Mixing ? We just listened to that Album he's talking about to what ever that was sure he was tripping ,think it was a White Trash Album but with Johnny, Edgar and Derringer a trip way after white trash not sure how I missed that, thought I had heard them all . Man a small club in Texas with Johnny can't be beat. Still waiting for some of what he did at the Vulcan Gas Company. where do y'all find this stuff?
Johnny your the best ever , unsurpassed creativity in your solos . This was the best band you ever had. Listen how the other guitarist gels with Johnnys playing.Unbelievable!

I learned to play guitar to this album and AC/DC. This album and concert is a must have for any musician, they groove threw the whole concert, and I have to say the other guitarist is no slouch either.

I saw Johnny in 1984 as the warm up band for krokus. Johnny blew everybody away. He was so good that when krokus came out to play, they were booed for the first five while they played. The singer was so pissed he was yelling at us it was great
screw that 'white' BS!!!! he is great PERIOD. if you really think blacks are somehow naturally better at anything other than track and field you are nuts. how would you like it if i said whites were naturally SMARTER? would not like it would ya! yet the evidence suggests... so shut UP!
One of the best parts of this '76 performance recording is the intro to this actual song! Johnny starts the number flailing on the Firebird with a PHASER pedal and it is so ripping!
Damn Floyd is bad ass!!

I wouldn't want to degrade the great Johhny Winter by putting him along side some of the sub-par musicians currently in RRHF. Most great musicians know he's one of the very best among the small handful of elite guitarists in history. He's fine right where he is.

You are probably right. I like how you put it.

Undeniably the best album of 1976!!! This one was literally scorched into my brain through repeated listenings while cranking the speakers up to eleven!!!

You're soooo right! This has to be one of the three guitar ultra freakout discs of all time! ANY guitarhead NEEDS this record. Worth the price for Highway 61 and Sweet Papa John alone!
asdesas 3 years ago 2
It's worth the price for Sweet Papa John by itself. That is one of the most mind-blowing kick as solos ever recorded. And you are right: if you're a serious rock/blues guitarist, you should never not have this record. Every minute of it is priceless.
mka800 3 years ago

AMBERBEACH 3 years ago
I was just giving a little history on the guy (Floyd Radford)since this video. He is still one of the best guitar players out there. The locals miss the old Floyd and wish he would play more rock and blues and less church music.

Thanks for the insight. I hope Jesus likes to rock. :-)

I learned to play guitar to this album and AC/DC. This album and concert is a must have for any musician, they groove threw the whole concert, and I have to say the other guitarist is no slouch either.

I saw Johnny in 1984 as the warm up band for krokus. Johnny blew everybody away. He was so good that when krokus came out to play, they were booed for the first five while they played. The singer was so pissed he was yelling at us it was great

"Saints & Sinners" was one f*cking killer of and album!! No question he set the pace in the 70's.

Guess you never heard of frank marino and mahogany rush then.
carmen777kook 4 years ago
yeah, I knew of Marino, and enjoyed what little he had out at that tine, but, IMHO, I don't think his "sound" won over as many fans.
BTW, theres some great footage of Marino and Mahogany Rush on youtube!!

Frank kicked ass, but not like Johnny.

Floyd has got fast fingers, he knows his licks up and down the fretboard but he doesn't get near Johnny's phrasing and style.

Floyd Radford had no trouble taking over Rick Derringer's role as Johnny's foil. R.I.P. Randy Jo Hobbs & Richard Hughes!
Eltamir 4 years ago
Johnny is the best all round white blues guitarist. When you listen to him playing rock 'n'roll the blues oozes out. No other Slinger can do this.
maddogslinger38 4 years ago 2
screw that 'white' BS!!!! he is great PERIOD. if you really think blacks are somehow naturally better at anything other than track and field you are nuts. how would you like it if i said whites were naturally SMARTER? would not like it would ya! yet the evidence suggests... so shut UP!

One of the best parts of this '76 performance recording is the intro to this actual song! Johnny starts the number flailing on the Firebird with a PHASER pedal and it is so ripping!
