  • what the hell did I just watch? Whatever it was, it makes the average American game show that I'm stuck watching - think: Steve Harvey mediating double-entendre-laden face-offs between a white family and a black family - look like utter shit.

  • @presentattempt Alas I think I gave them in to a cub-scout jumble sale sometime in the early 60s maybe. I wonder where they are now. 

  • I read Dirac's biography "The Strangest Man" about a month ago and was able to answer every question correctly based on solely that knowledge. This man has had a 30-40 year obsession with him and couldn't even answer questions which a single read of his biography would have answered. Poor effort.

  • @narby86 Same, and its pretty obvious that the man has no knowledge of physics at all, I was actually laughing at his last answer, Einstein disproving magnetic monopoles!

  • When I was a young man in Bristol I had a pair of second-hand trousers with "Dirac" stitched on the inside label in red thread. They would have been roughly waist 26", leg 33", with pleats, otherwise non-descript black suit trousers. I now wonder if they belonged to the great man.

  • actually his last answer, arguable, has some truth. Dirac's equations does, to a certain extent, prove the existance of monopoles under certain transformations.

    I suppose I see your point about no aether, though, because the Dirac sea is not what Michelson/Morley were looking for, and what Michelson/Morley were looking for, i.e. an aether that the planet passes through (in orbit around the sun and the galaxy and the local cluster, etc.) and that (I guess) exerts a consequent opposing reaction upon light here but not upon matter here, is clearly not there.

    You miss the point entirely. It is excellent that a non-scientist such as this gentleman answering questions on Mastermind should be so interested. Good for him. He is not claiming to reduce Dirac's life in any way. Rather the opposite I think.

  • @grayoracle - I think he was torn between answering quantum mechanics and quantum electrodynamics.Hmm. Gee, did somebody reduce Dirac's life to ten questions? I must have missed that. You know this was a quiz show, right?

  • @weweallthewayhome Apparently dirac had a paper which seemed to indicate it did. This is the first I have heard of this so I need to go look into it.

  • @ArcaneInquisitor There were three papers called "A New Classical Theory of Electrons" published in the early 50s. They postulated that the current in the vacuum was proportional to the electromagnetic potential, J = kA - so the vacuum became a sort of superconductor. Dirac's aim was always to fix the ambiguous features of QED by starting from a better classical theory of electromagnetism. The one we have is broken - there is no way to make a consistent theory of point charges.
