I live in Berlin, where everybody should speak German or at least English to ask. I met different Asians: Japanese, Korean, Thai and Hong Kong people would ask me in English or German. But most Chinese and Vietnamese people just speak in their language, without asking where I'm from...
I'm Filipino and everyone thinks I'm Chinese, Viet., Korean, or Japanese. I honestly got so sick of it last year that I bought a lanyard that says "PHILIPPINES" because I thought it would make people stop.
well to tell the truth korea, japan and china have been conducting trade and people moving to each others countries for centuries.. so in fact many asians have mixed asian blood.. its like how the british, french and germans are mixed into each other more than most people think.
Haha. I relate and get EXACTLY what you mean. I can't speak Chinese, however I'm asian -- 25% Chinese, 25% Kadazan and 50% Dusun (these are native races of Borneo, Malaysia) but on the whole, I still look pure Chinese to most people and IT IS SO IRRITATING. hahaha. It's always awkward when people start talking to me in Chinese......
We're all humans. You can specify and classify, but if you think about it .... the Continent of Asia pertains to Russia, the Middle East, India, and others as well; if you think of a whole, some people just consider the eastern hemisphere as Eurasia (Europe and Asia). But in the end we're all humans. :P

When it is a non-Asian person who tries to ask anything racist in english, I just pretend that I can't speak English "Surry no egnlirgsh." If they speak Chinese I say "Surry no egnlirgsh." Then give a nervous shy giggle while they have a WTF? look. This goes well when you go and speak to someone else in perfect English afterwards. "Surry no egnlirgsh." has worked well for me. Its like the force that Jedi to pull out of their asses when in trouble.

I can differentiate Korean, Japanese and Chinese and other asian ethnic background. And the same thing as you, they mistook me as a Chinese. Happened when i was looking for a book in the library then someone randomly speaks chinese to me. I was thinking maybe because the university im in are full of Chinese but ye they are everywhere though. I remember a Bust stop full of them every morning....

The population is very high with Puerto Ricans which is fine, but english every now and then would be great. This is very common XD, I am not Asian, but I have many Asian(Koreans and Japaneses) friends(and also like asian music, mostly Korean and Japanese) and most of my non-asian friends are always like "hey there is your chinese friend"or "oh, you are watching that chinese band again" and when I said "they are Korean!!!!" they are like "you can't tell the difference anyway, they all look alike"

My husband is Thai and is usually mistaken for being Japanese, Chinese and rarely Korean. My best guess why people automatically assume every Asian they see is Chinese is since there are so many Chinese, it's a safe bet? (I hope that sentence didn't seem offensive)
I've watched enough music videos & dramas of sorts that I'm pretty good at telling what specific race an Asian might be. In any case, I agree that people shouldn't assume, it just makes us look silly.

@TheAsianZing Lol. My grandparents were actually from the Indian side of the border, but they migrated and call themselves Pakistani now. Race wise, we're Indian, but we prefer the term Desi which means from the once united subcontinent of India. I guess it's kinda like how Taiwanese dislike being called Chinese when racially they are the same.

You're lucky, cause you're Asian and get tell who is Korean, Chinese, Japanese... Sometimes I can tell if someone is Chinese, Korean or Japanese. I'm from Brussels, Belgium. I'm of African and Caribbean origin. I live in the USA for now.

OMG, this was the funniest video I have seen in a long time. I'm not asian, but I had to subscribe for more of this. I busted out laughing at the "speak english" part. I live in Orlando, FL. The population is very high with Puerto Ricans which is fine, but english every now and then would be great. My wife and I are black and get mistakened for Puerto Rican or Cuban sometime which I don't see why. Well we all have African decent I guess. Light and Darker skin people. Jamacian isn't asked.

chinese may look like korean .....but both of them all the way differ to japanese.i'm vietnamese but i hate when some muthaaafucker chink stare me like i was chinese..Once i open door,they said : "xie xie"....then "ching la chong la la la" means Thanks ...and the awkard moment was there...Over and over again....and I kinda like " Have you any cotton-wool to stuff my ear with ? This is very common XD, I am not Asian, but I have many Asian(Koreans and Japaneses) friends(and also like asian music, mostly Korean and Japanese) and most of my non-asian friends are always like "hey there is your chinese friend"or "oh, you are watching that chinese band again" and when I said "they are Korean!!!!" they are like "you can't tell the difference anyway, they all look alike"

My husband is Thai and is usually mistaken for being Japanese, Chinese and rarely Korean. My best guess why people automatically assume every Asian they see is Chinese is since there are so many Chinese, it's a safe bet? (I hope that sentence didn't seem offensive)
I've watched enough music videos & dramas of sorts that I'm pretty good at telling what specific race an Asian might be. In any case, I agree that people shouldn't assume, it just makes us look silly.

@TheAsianZing Lol. My grandparents were actually from the Indian side of the border, but they migrated and call themselves Pakistani now. Race wise, we're Indian, but we prefer the term Desi which means from the once united subcontinent of India. I guess it's kinda like how Taiwanese dislike being called Chinese when racially they are the same.
