@dayingyang0 And spend at least another $150 or more just to get it to interface with a computer??? Please. I looked at XLR mic setups, and see no point to spending that kind of cash to do 64kbps podcasts or youtube vids. The cheapest XLR setup I found (MXL 990) was like $200 after all the extra bits you need to run it, and that's way overkill for this type of stuff.
Hey guys, can anybody let me know if you have a Samson C03U? It's to record some Youtube videos (voice+acoustic guitar)... The Blue Snowball is pretty but it seems the Samson C03U now has the switchable pickup patterns as well.
The snowball works great for me, but both it and the Samson are great products, it's just a question of what you want.
Blue Snowball - 2 cardioid settings, and 1 omni directional
Samson CO1U - more traditional mic design, Sonar DAW software included, longer USB cord.
Both sound great. Not sure what setting you have on your snowball, but I've got more gain on the mic than what you're getting in the recording. I'm going to put up some videos with some drums I recorded with it, and a demo.
i can't tell a bit of difference in my snowball and the mic. on my laptop.......am i missing something here? shouldn't a microphone make noise when you tap on it?
so far mine is useless! i don't know if it automatically over-rides the built in mic. or not. i cannot tell a difference. thanx for any help
@ryancrucker I am guessing you are on a mac, so whenever you want to change mics you need to go into your system preferences and click on sound and then choose the mic you want to use at that moment. Don't forget to tuen it back once you're done. If you're on a Windows there is probably something in the sound part of the control panel however I'm not completely sure.
its all just personal taste. i know people that have been using the blue snow ball mic for a while now and they have no complaints. & they use it for their home music & recording studio
Hey I bought one without the USB cable because it was used. what type of usb cable does it use, like male-a to female-b,/ male -a to female-a , etc???? THX
I find that Blue mics are nice, but they seem to pick up a lot of surrounding noises. It only works when your mouth is right on it. On the C01U and comparable mics, you don't have to be right up on it.
Wow, I was about to get the snowball too! Samson is WAAAYY cheaper and sounds way better and more amplified! Thanks so much man, you just saved my money! Great video man!
BTW, how much was your spider mount? How much did u get ur mic for? Thanks!
Wow, I was about to get the snowball too! Samson is WAAAYY cheaper and sounds way better and more amplified! Thanks so much man, you just saved my money! Great video man!
I like the Samson sound much better, not sure if the Blue got better later with tweaking the settings, but out of the two with only this video to judge, the Samson seems like much better mic. Im on the market for one usb mic, still looking for side to side between the Samson/Audiotechnia/Yeti. Have you tested or comapred any other usb mics aside from the two on the video?
We use the Blue in a loud environment to stream and record our band practice. It performs stellar there, but yeah, it does sound less sensitive than the Samson from what you're showing here... and the gain is definitely low on the Blue. The Samson sounds way better, I came to youtube to see if there was any info, and these are the 2 I was going to bid on on EBAY, thanks for the comparison.
I love the snowball, I use it to record songs, and people always say that the quality is amazing for a home recording. I haven't tried the samson, but it does seem like it has a lot crisper sound. I don't know if the samson is a directional mic or not though, this helps block out a lot of outside noise depending on which setting the mic is on. And if you had the blue snowball switch on setting "3" it will probably pick up the sound downstairs that you were talking about
I can see how the Blue works great while singing. I have heard that blue is coming out with an upscale USB microphone. I have to start saving my money but I think I want to try one of those. What's funny is a lot of people took the video the wrong way, I was just trying to find a microphone that I could speak into.
The SAMSON has a much deeper richness to its sound and captures your voice much better than the blue. This is a good review of the two mics, as I am thinking about buying a mic soon for my podcasting and the Samson has really caught my attention thanks to your review, so thank you for putting this out! It has been a great help!
how did you get the mic to pic up so much audio?! i just bought it yesterday and it seems like it barely picks up and volume when i speak into it....yours is pretty loud.
Thanks for watching. If you go to The Samson website they have recommendations software you can download for the C01U. when I made that video. I was not using the Samson Software, I was using software product called video impression 2. I hope this helps you out.
I did not treat either mic different, they were just used flat out no panel, I did not turn one up or down. That is the way they sounded straight from the recording.
Ok, I am a voice over guy looking to replace a AKG 3000 and M box with a usb mic, Yhe snowball has a rabid following, but in this test the Sampson sounds way richer,
For Voice overs I would recommend the Samson over the Snowball. You are correct that it is richer and more suited for your needs. HOwever you might also like the PreSonus Comp16. It works well with the C3000 (I know because I use it) and might help tighten up the sound you are getting.
lol if you look at the back theres 3 capsules.1 is 1 that doesntt pick up background noises and the other has a 10-db, then the last 1 picks up everything.
i have my snowball set to where u cant hear ne background just like a studio
Can you tell me what some of your settings are for the C01U? It sounds much richer than the Snowball, and I was wondering if you EQ'd it at all, or did anything to the mic other than the dry signal. Thanks!
The Blue snowball is in fact a cardiod/omni condenser mic. Samson generally deal with consumer audio whereas Blue make microphones all the way up to full solid state microphones. The noise floor on the C01U is way too loud, especially for any professional grade recording. To me the snowball sounds way better. Just borrowed one from work and I'll be pushing these over Samson.
I'm starting to think I got a bad snowball. I don't want to open a can of worms here but I bought this snowball at Sam Ash, it was in the case and they had to re-box it. In reality knows what could have happened to it. I'm about ready to pull this video.
Well.. I have the Snowball... and trust me.. just because the samson sounds louder doesn't mean it's the best.. Plus im not sure if heiwthl had that little switch in the back in number 3(snowball)... which i believe it's the omni option..
If you switch it to 3 it will sound louder and MORE CLEAR... I really liked this one... it's a really good mic..
P.S. Don't forget youtube takes away part of the audio quality of all the videos... so you gotta actually listen to it your self with your ears..
In this video the Samson wins IMHO. I think its alot liuder..crisper..has a more rich and full sound. That bieng said the c01u is an older model now. Ive been looking into getting a new mic for my music and ive been leaning towards the c03u model, have you had any experience with that one at all? But ya the snowball to me is more...Mac style than anything. More about looks and the cute factor than actual substance. Plus it looks like it would break easy where the samson is fully metal.
well after a couple of conversations with some people on YouTube, I'm thinking I might have had a bad snowball. The problem with the Samson is it's a mono mic. I think the snowball would be better suited for music or singing. Have downloaded the software for the snowball?
the snowball mic is indeed a condensor mic it records nice but which do you think would be better for rap vocals, i have the snowball but i'm thinking of returning it and getting the samson but im not sure which one do you think i should choose? please reply
the samson sounded really gud.. the snowball sounded ok but it sounded like it was at a constant low all the time.. with the samson it sounded very clear with a good output but when farther away, the sound quality goes too.. personally, i think i would choose the samson over the snowball.. it just had a better overall sound..
there is a switch on the back of the snowball. number one is the switch or the setting you need when you're talking directly in front of the mic. I've gotten enough messages back, where I'm thinking I got a defective snowball. I probably will try another one here shortly.
The snowballs that were manufactured before july 2007 had some firmware compatability issues notably with vista, these problems resulted with a low input and consequently clipping if turned up too high and popping if you got too close to it.
The way to find out is if the serial no. is higher than76-065000 it has the new firmware and shouldn't have problems.
hey if u can mabe make ur own or buy a popfilter...i would love to hear what it sounds like with a popfilter becuase i am trying to buy a mic and i dont know wich is better...the samson with a pack of a lot of stuff or the se 1000a usb mic that is good but has nuthin that comes with it...anyways plz write me back if u could or just dont want to...also good review and thanx =]
you know what's strange, is just the way that mic acted and all of the other mics have owned I had a small feeling something was wrong with it. I need to give another snowball a try. I still want a Road Podcaster though.
The audio on the recording is raw, I didn't upload it to anything an amplifier or anything else. If I was using it (the Mic) two record an instrument I definitely would've used the Snow Ball. I am getting the itch for a Rode Podcaster.
id check your recording out again. i copied your audio and upped the level of the snowball and reduced the samson and i got the same result but this time the snowball was loud and the samson was quiet. the Q of both is very good. but worth bearing in mind .. if more amplifier gain is required [quieter output] some amplified noise may be introduced into the recording.
In my professional opinion it's going to make more of a difference which Digi Studio you will pair the Snowball with. You can run vocals on setting 1 and then boost up/tweak VT's to your hearts content.
If you use FL8 XXL and bumrush the vocal tracks with effects, EQ stereo enhancer, VOCODER, filters, compressors and WOWness.
well, dayum-- You will turn the Snowball into the greatest USB condenser mic ever!
IF its picking up your wife and kids downstairs, it is a C-mic.
C01U is certainly louder which makes it "easy listening". It create some bassy low-end which makes the sound firmer. However, I doubt (although I might be wrong) if that's the real sound of the person who speaks. In real life I don't hear people talk with that kind of sound. In other words, I can feel the sound is record from a microphone.
The Snowball on the other hand sounds more realistic.
This is just my opinion though. I'm instrument player and care more about fidelity.
The snowball sounded in recordings like it was -10db all the time. As far as the way I sound, I have a deeper voice I just think the Samson picks it up more realistically. if you are into instruments you want -10db, from what I understand.
Did you use any of the other options on the Snowball? It does have the cardioid, -10db, and the omni, which I would guess would pick up about as well as the Samson. Looks like you had it on cardioid?
I think the Samson is louder and does pick up more background noise. I didn't set them up that way it is just the way they are. If I was into singing and recording the snowball would be my choice
There is too much noise with the Samson.. It's louder, but picks up more background noise. I think the Snowball wins. Unless you just have them set to do that on purpose??
How much does the Samson C01U cost? Icluding the spider carriage? Does it distort when you get to close? Would you rate it on a scale from 1 to 100 please? Thanks
Hey, as I recall $110 you can pick one up on ebay used for cheaper. On a scale of what would rate it for a USB 96- 100, I have seen the MXL .008 and was impressed so this scale might be a sliding one.
I actually just purchased this mike with the cradle and a desk stand and all for 125 from Amazon new and that included shipping. Thanks for your video. To me, the snowball doesn't sound as present. I read that it was better, but the audio of your video tells me otherwise. I should get it in a few days, so we'll see. Thanks again. Also, I think the Samung creates a higher SNR and looks more professional. Just thought I would throw that out there. I can hear your kids more through the snowball.
hi im looking to buy a samson COl mic with the XLR connector so i can run it threw a mixer but my question is if the over all vocals on the samson are clear for music production thanks
Yes. I still use, and like my C03. I personally really like these microphones. The C01 and the C03 are very similar. What kind of mixer are you going to be using?
im am using a basic mixer at the current time it is a sony anolog mixer with 7 channels and stero output i plan to upgrade to a PreSonus StudioLive 16.4.2 in about 4 months
i will, its gonna be about 4 months considering it costs 2000 im most pleased with the fact that its onbord effects are not only the best for the price and the fact that u can mix tracks down on the mixer using firewire is great too i will make a video of what i am using before any upgrades and thanks
I have not noticed lag at all with skype. I think lag can appear with the speed of the connection or the type of ISP connection, but the mic works fine from my end.
In this video it seems that the Samson is much better. Also, the way you talk makes it seem like you enjoy the samson much more. Which do you like more? Also I'm more into recording musical instruments and singing, but also want to use it for speaking too. Which would you recommend with your experience of the two?
Of the two, I personally would use the Samson C01U but you have to be up on it, for singing and musical instruments it's perfect. for speaking like I said you have to be close to it to have a good sound. I'm a soft talker and it does great.

also there is a led light within the metal mesh which gives it a cool blue glow in a dark room.

Samson c01u is a great mic, i think the samson sounds a lot better compared to the blue.

sicknquick323 2 years ago
Well On ebay it looks like Snowball new is $74 and the Samason $62.85. They used to be allot more expensive....
heitwl 2 years ago
The SAMSON has a much deeper richness to its sound and captures your voice much better than the blue. This is a good review of the two mics, as I am thinking about buying a mic soon for my podcasting and the Samson has really caught my attention thanks to your review, so thank you for putting this out! It has been a great help!
langdonhillsman 2 years ago
you can hear the wife and kid more on the samson
helium5279 2 years ago
how did you get the mic to pic up so much audio?! i just bought it yesterday and it seems like it barely picks up and volume when i speak into it....yours is pretty loud.
InterActionFilms 2 years ago
Thanks for watching. If you go to The Samson website they have recommendations software you can download for the C01U. when I made that video. I was not using the Samson Software, I was using software product called video impression 2. I hope this helps you out.

It should work with Vista quite well.

Yeh i noticed wen i got it today, i was like "wow it's Samson not Samsung" XD
DeeMinion 2 years ago
I did not treat either mic different, they were just used flat out no panel, I did not turn one up or down. That is the way they sounded straight from the recording.
heitwl 2 years ago
The only reason why it's loud is because either he went to his control panel and turn it up or he did not go to the control panel and turn it down.
TheRealestXPain 2 years ago
thats just WRONG! he didnt touch either mic. he used them OUT OF BOX and posted AS IS. The samson is better
AppleSoldier 2 years ago
Ok, I am a voice over guy looking to replace a AKG 3000 and M box with a usb mic, Yhe snowball has a rabid following, but in this test the Sampson sounds way richer,
fivefamly 2 years ago
For Voice overs I would recommend the Samson over the Snowball. You are correct that it is richer and more suited for your needs. HOwever you might also like the PreSonus Comp16. It works well with the C3000 (I know because I use it) and might help tighten up the sound you are getting.
GaragebandandBeyond 2 years ago
lol if you look at the back theres 3 capsules.1 is 1 that doesntt pick up background noises and the other has a 10-db, then the last 1 picks up everything.
i have my snowball set to where u cant hear ne background just like a studio
SecondCitySinner 2 years ago
Can you tell me what some of your settings are for the C01U? It sounds much richer than the Snowball, and I was wondering if you EQ'd it at all, or did anything to the mic other than the dry signal. Thanks!
StudioiNcavo 2 years ago
i think the samson c01u is mainly made for recording drums, or other instruments.
Niek747 2 years ago
The Blue snowball is in fact a cardiod/omni condenser mic. Samson generally deal with consumer audio whereas Blue make microphones all the way up to full solid state microphones. The noise floor on the C01U is way too loud, especially for any professional grade recording. To me the snowball sounds way better. Just borrowed one from work and I'll be pushing these over Samson.
xzippxx 2 years ago
I'm starting to think I got a bad snowball. I don't want to open a can of worms here but I bought this snowball at Sam Ash, it was in the case and they had to re-box it. In reality knows what could have happened to it. I'm about ready to pull this video.

i have a question..
im tryin to get a home studio nd i wanna
get one of these two microphones..
wich one do u recomend for a home studio to like make songs in my room???????
alex41294 2 years ago
If you are going to be sining I would go with the Samson 301U, or a Rode podcaster. personally.
heitwl 2 years ago
I highly recommend the Samson. In my opinion it is more versatile.
I have some product reviews on my channel you might be interested in if you are putting together a home studio.
GaragebandandBeyond 2 years ago
TheMize18 2 years ago
Samson wins :)
djthefluff 2 years ago
In this video the Samson wins IMHO. I think its alot liuder..crisper..has a more rich and full sound. That bieng said the c01u is an older model now. Ive been looking into getting a new mic for my music and ive been leaning towards the c03u model, have you had any experience with that one at all? But ya the snowball to me is more...Mac style than anything. More about looks and the cute factor than actual substance. Plus it looks like it would break easy where the samson is fully metal.
Shadownian 2 years ago
Samson sounds a lot better.

I'm going with the snowball. Thank you!
chessdude67 2 years ago
well after a couple of conversations with some people on YouTube, I'm thinking I might have had a bad snowball. The problem with the Samson is it's a mono mic. I think the snowball would be better suited for music or singing. Have downloaded the software for the snowball?
heitwl 2 years ago
what software? my snowball didn't come with a software
jgdominican 2 years ago
the snowball mic is indeed a condensor mic it records nice but which do you think would be better for rap vocals, i have the snowball but i'm thinking of returning it and getting the samson but im not sure which one do you think i should choose? please reply
jgdominican 2 years ago
Get A Samson C01u Or A G Track imm Getting The G Track And I Rap Too
YungArez 2 years ago
the samson sounded really gud.. the snowball sounded ok but it sounded like it was at a constant low all the time.. with the samson it sounded very clear with a good output but when farther away, the sound quality goes too.. personally, i think i would choose the samson over the snowball.. it just had a better overall sound..
y0sefb0i04 2 years ago
Dang! The Snowball sounds awful. The Samson is a slam dunk.
TeleTubeee 2 years ago
Isn't there a switch on the back of the Snowball that sets the mode of pickup?
OwlMovieStudios 2 years ago
there is a switch on the back of the snowball. number one is the switch or the setting you need when you're talking directly in front of the mic. I've gotten enough messages back, where I'm thinking I got a defective snowball. I probably will try another one here shortly.
heitwl 2 years ago
The snowballs that were manufactured before july 2007 had some firmware compatability issues notably with vista, these problems resulted with a low input and consequently clipping if turned up too high and popping if you got too close to it.
The way to find out is if the serial no. is higher than76-065000 it has the new firmware and shouldn't have problems.
lacerveza1977 2 years ago
hey if u can mabe make ur own or buy a popfilter...i would love to hear what it sounds like with a popfilter becuase i am trying to buy a mic and i dont know wich is better...the samson with a pack of a lot of stuff or the se 1000a usb mic that is good but has nuthin that comes with it...anyways plz write me back if u could or just dont want to...also good review and thanx =]
LILTOXIC18 2 years ago
you know what's strange, is just the way that mic acted and all of the other mics have owned I had a small feeling something was wrong with it. I need to give another snowball a try. I still want a Road Podcaster though.
heitwl 2 years ago
you have a bad Snowball. I use my snowball for independent recordings for myself and my band, and i have NO trouble with the volume levels.
CtWRea 2 years ago
The audio on the recording is raw, I didn't upload it to anything an amplifier or anything else. If I was using it (the Mic) two record an instrument I definitely would've used the Snow Ball. I am getting the itch for a Rode Podcaster.
heitwl 2 years ago
sorry but i was curious.
id check your recording out again. i copied your audio and upped the level of the snowball and reduced the samson and i got the same result but this time the snowball was loud and the samson was quiet. the Q of both is very good. but worth bearing in mind .. if more amplifier gain is required [quieter output] some amplified noise may be introduced into the recording.
89notes 2 years ago
In my professional opinion it's going to make more of a difference which Digi Studio you will pair the Snowball with. You can run vocals on setting 1 and then boost up/tweak VT's to your hearts content.
If you use FL8 XXL and bumrush the vocal tracks with effects, EQ stereo enhancer, VOCODER, filters, compressors and WOWness.
well, dayum-- You will turn the Snowball into the greatest USB condenser mic ever!
IF its picking up your wife and kids downstairs, it is a C-mic.
YEAh, I her :)

I'm instrument player and care more about fidelity.
duxutube 3 years ago
The snowball sounded in recordings like it was -10db all the time. As far as the way I sound, I have a deeper voice I just think the Samson picks it up more realistically. if you are into instruments you want -10db, from what I understand.
heitwl 3 years ago
Did you use any of the other options on the Snowball? It does have the cardioid, -10db, and the omni, which I would guess would pick up about as well as the Samson. Looks like you had it on cardioid?
TheCuddlyKnife 3 years ago
I think the Samson is louder and does pick up more background noise. I didn't set them up that way it is just the way they are. If I was into singing and recording the snowball would be my choice
heitwl 3 years ago
There is too much noise with the Samson.. It's louder, but picks up more background noise. I think the Snowball wins. Unless you just have them set to do that on purpose??
gothiquegirrl 3 years ago
u can hear lots of background shit with the samson
not with the snowball

How much does the Samson C01U cost? Icluding the spider carriage? Does it distort when you get to close? Would you rate it on a scale from 1 to 100 please? Thanks
wondnaereh 3 years ago
Hey, as I recall $110 you can pick one up on ebay used for cheaper. On a scale of what would rate it for a USB 96- 100, I have seen the MXL .008 and was impressed so this scale might be a sliding one.
heitwl 3 years ago
I actually just purchased this mike with the cradle and a desk stand and all for 125 from Amazon new and that included shipping. Thanks for your video. To me, the snowball doesn't sound as present. I read that it was better, but the audio of your video tells me otherwise. I should get it in a few days, so we'll see. Thanks again. Also, I think the Samung creates a higher SNR and looks more professional. Just thought I would throw that out there. I can hear your kids more through the snowball.
wondnaereh 3 years ago
hi im looking to buy a samson COl mic with the XLR connector so i can run it threw a mixer but my question is if the over all vocals on the samson are clear for music production thanks
morbidtog 3 years ago
Yes. I still use, and like my C03. I personally really like these microphones. The C01 and the C03 are very similar. What kind of mixer are you going to be using?
heitwl 3 years ago
im am using a basic mixer at the current time it is a sony anolog mixer with 7 channels and stero output i plan to upgrade to a PreSonus StudioLive 16.4.2 in about 4 months
morbidtog 3 years ago
PreSonus StudioLive 16! That is a serious mixer! Make a video when you get it...
heitwl 3 years ago
i will, its gonna be about 4 months considering it costs 2000 im most pleased with the fact that its onbord effects are not only the best for the price and the fact that u can mix tracks down on the mixer using firewire is great too i will make a video of what i am using before any upgrades and thanks
morbidtog 3 years ago
Nice comparison! I have a question, the Samson work fine also with skype calls or it have some lag?
Thank you, bye
connexvideo 3 years ago
I have not noticed lag at all with skype. I think lag can appear with the speed of the connection or the type of ISP connection, but the mic works fine from my end.
Thank you for watching.

Ok many thanks! :-)

Just read about a lot of compatibility issues with vista. Going for the Samson now. I want a usb mic for recording acoustic guitar.
Great review.
thanks!
Stevo79er 3 years ago
In this video it seems that the Samson is much better. Also, the way you talk makes it seem like you enjoy the samson much more. Which do you like more? Also I'm more into recording musical instruments and singing, but also want to use it for speaking too. Which would you recommend with your experience of the two?
Guardianangel09 3 years ago
Of the two, I personally would use the Samson C01U but you have to be up on it, for singing and musical instruments it's perfect. for speaking like I said you have to be close to it to have a good sound. I'm a soft talker and it does great.
heitwl 3 years ago
Thanks! I was planning on getting the CO1U anyway. I just wanted to get an opinion from someone who had both.
Guardianangel09 3 years ago
I would be interested in what you think...
You will be happy.
