@ItzhakRoxMySox yeap... Im just giving out my opinion and if you think hahn's better that's fine with me, but looking from the way Kristof plays, he's interpretation isnt as amazing as Hahn's
@imparadoxical It's faster, more tension, more excitement, more fervor. You can hear the very mood and anxiety of the piece. Hahn's is technically perfect, but it's just to bland and one-dimensional for my liking.
OMG this is awesome, however, i like it better slower because you can hear better each voice of the story... and i think thats the fabulous thing about this piece!
lol. Mega fantastic playing, but it seems like some for some of the triplet sequences, he discarded tempo altogether and tried to play them as fast as humanly possible. Some triplet sequences played more like complex trills instead of notes with tempo.
@japanesebusinessdood uhhh.... no, his had is not moving faster than the speed of light. That would require literally infinite energy. It's faster than the frame capture rate of the camera
Ok, I'm speechless, this guy it's amazing, I would like to play 1/4 of his playing, but i just think that the faster you play doesnt mean the best you are. Other things are important. this is a story. feelings, pathos... here he plays like a virtuoso, not like a musician in my opinion. I mean, i hear this and i am speechless, but i'm not moved from the music. While for example julia fischer does.
@stino22 sooooooooooo much faster.... i think he had pee or something like that... i don't like the interpretation he makes, some parts of the peace are not clear, in my opinion the best interpretation is what Hilary Hanh makes, you can hear each note.
Definitely one of the best recordings I have heard. Speed of Kremer with much more clarity. I can't say I like the phrasing as much, but that's only opinion. This fellow should be more famous.
I'm speechless that it is even possible to play this piece so incredibly fast!!! My teacher calls this piece a 'work-out' for the violinist, however he plays it so incredibly fast that the violin is getting more of a 'work-out' than the violinist ^_^
I kinda feel sorry for the violin after listening to this...
(also speechless...) This guy can play the violin like a handful of people have done ever, but seems also to be intelligent, humble & self-critic... Such an improvement isn't normal in "modern" times IMHO. And one question: Would Ernst be impressed by "nicety" rather than by "daddy ride quicker", wouldn't he have written a "grand etude" on "il sole mio" or "torna a Sorrento"...?
Der Erlkönig (often called just Erlkönig) is a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. It depicts the death of a child assailed by a supernatural being, the Erlking or "Erlkönig" (suggesting the literal translation "alder king", but see below). It was originally composed by Goethe as part of a 1782 ballad opera entitled Die Fischerin.
i liked hilary hahn's better... its like you could hear everything... and u could appreciate what was happening instead of this where it seems just thrown there and rushed ridiculously...
I assume that Ernst's intentions were the same with this transcription. It's just for the nature of the instrument, that a multi-layered texture of such a hard piece can be hardly transcribed for that with a continuous driving of all the voices simultaneously.
Another aspect is to examine the original goals of transcriptions like this. On one hand they were written for popularizing the original versions, on the other to amazing the audience.
Of course, comparing transcriptions to the original versions of which they were made is not "useless and silly."
What can be a transcriptor's intention if not to reach the closest sounding to the original version? In that theme I can only advise to study ex. Liszt's opera-transcriptions. He was such a genius to be able to make possible for a sufficiently talented and experienced pianist to reach the soundings of a total orchestra + singers on a single piano.
Fantastic! The tempo is correct (compare Fischer-Dieskau and Moore). The Moravian violinist/composer, H.W.Ernst, was considered by many the greatest violinist of the 19th century, after Paganini, by whom, like his good friend Liszt, he was inspired (and later with whom he competed). He introduced new methods for playing polyphonically of which this is a perfect example. Joseph Joachim, certainly no slouch himself, said that Ernst towered above all other violinists he had ever met. Bravo Barati!
IMO, you cannot judge the tempo by comparing it to a singer + piano, it's a totally different approach. If you "think" the text along with this version, then you'll notice e.g. a gap between the notes on 'Va' and 'ter', so comparing with a vocal version is useless and silly.
Here is part of the review from The Times of London, July 8, 1844, of Ernst's performance of this piece:
"In his version of Schubert's "Erl King," which in the programme was stated to be transcribed for the violin alone, he played conjointly , and yet with a distinct independence of each other, the part written for the voice and the elaborate pianoforte accompaniments, giving the former all the expression which a most perfect singer could impart."
@likemyviolin Isn't it interesting that technology cannot take over the making of stringed instruments. I mean, people 300 years are much better than us at assembling pieces of wood.
Wow! The speed's great! Love it more than Hilary Hahn's. And he has nice fingers
