It's lovely that she barely uses the classic "umm" while talking. Instead of it she makes a pause and actually thinks about what to say next...and god, what a great voice!
She is brilliant. Just saw her a few weeks ago at the STC doing 'Gross und Kline' on stage and she was genius :D she really gave them practical advice. She is truly one of the greatest actresses of our generation
People that are talking about her voice, let me fill you in on something: Cate once had a lisp, and she trained herself like a muthafucker to rid of it, she also had voice training through her course from NIDA and personal training. Learn a thing or two instead of just assuming it's her herbicidal voice formed from the Australian language.
My head jsut got done in. There is a unnatural British Commmand Greace and restraint to her. Unlike most aussies like me who are more forward and easy going. Her command of herself is so strong she smashes the common typical, even mind blowing Lipton at times.
@Seethus Don't get what you mean. I'm from Melbourne, born and bread. In fact i grew up quite close to Cate (Ivanhoe). I just find her voice and demeanor different.
@Neojhun I wouldn't call her accent English, not in the sense of being an acquired English accent anyway. I live in Melbourne and this is a very common accent, particularly among the well educated. It just depends on where you grew up and the range of influences around you as to your accent.
she's my favourite aherctress, she's so intelligent, a pure actress, just a real artist... believe it or not, there's not to much Talented actress in Hollywood... SHE'S THE BEST
God,she was shooting the Aviator at the time, playing Katharine Hepburn,a role for which she would win an oscar! I wonder if she ever thought of that at that moment!
I already knew loved her, but now I'm an even bigger fan. She is just a dish, so articulate, so natural and humble. It's cute when she slips into her "joke-telling" accent. And that last answer with the "flick, dab, punch" stuff is JUST fascinating!!!
@SirPsychoFlea That she did and believe me being an Aussie I totally agree with her about that word. It is strangely satisfying in the heat of anger or frustration to let fly with a rich flourish of that word. :)
@Ozjourneyman It's the was we say it, When american and British typicaly make it rough and love aka week. But when aussies say it we exagerate the U. Given a forward almost Italian energy to it. Then it ends in the rough T, like two stages of a punch.
@Neojhun Well put. It is used well, if sparingly, by most Aussies. As for the horror some people endure upon hearing the word it's origin may be surprising. It is a derivative form of "cooch" which is an adaptation of "conie or conny" which actually is a rabbit. And although I'm of politer qualities I have to admit Iv'e seen a cooch or two that can be described as gutted rabbits hahahaha
i agree...a lot of young women seem to have annoying whiny voices that start to grate on your ears after a while. But not Cate. She's really soothing.

It's highly refreshing today to listen to someone who doesn't constantly inject "Um..." between thoughts and sentence parts.

Her accent is more english than even Naomi whats. Naomi's pre adolencense was in Uk. Cate grew up entirely in Melbourne, thats wierd.
Neojhun 4 months ago
@Neojhun
thats cos in Melbourne we don't have the stereotypical Sydney "aussie" accent that most of the world knows.

@Neojhun i think her accent is quite normal for a melbournian,
im from hawthorn, and i attend MLC too, and she sounds normal too me. i have teachers and family friends who sound like that, nothing unusual for me,
