They should be different. It's a poignant acceleration to the top of the phrase. It's like the gypsy turns the second mvt. of the Brahms Quintet at the piu lento....all different. It's improvisation. Stanley Hasty did those things better than anyone I ever heard. It made my hair stand on end when I heard him play it the first time.
Superb. As a jazz Clrt, I'm aware that versions of a solo vary in previous or succeeding ones by the same player. That's 1 of the essences of jazz. However, I'm astounded at the different interpretations of which I was not aware in classical music. In this, the group of 3 turns, is almost a finger print or DNA of the player. My most recent student completed it but listened to everybody she could find (except me!) as we worked on the turns. Said she "They're all different!"
May I make a suggestion. It's vocal, operatic music..not instrumental music...it just happens to be written for the clarinet...for a personal friend, Stadler. Don't play it any differently than you would expect a world class singer to sing it;...a great tenor..Placido Domingo..not any faster, and in no way, in a wooden, instrumental fashion. Don't think rhythm. It's all about melodic line. Try singing it. It's like tasting great food. Italian food. Yum. BNolan
I am learning this and I am really struggling to not rush the demi-semi-quaver runs, I have a lot of admiration for the clarinetist; everything is perfect!
The other way around....he composed this first, before the concerto...but how can you steal from yourself, and who knows what on in his head.? I guess Mozart could do anything, and proved it many times.
In any case they should enforce that sort of stealing as an honorable and encouraged activity.
Great recording - great playing. Nolan has the tempi just right and I love his sound. Agree that this is one of the best - if not the best - recording of the quintet on Youtube. THANKS so much!
I love this! I had this on an old CD(can't find it LOL). Plus, it skipped alot too. what are the cords for the clarinet and is it easy to play?

Obviously some of it is borrowed from Mozart's Clarinet Concerto, but I don't think it's stealing if you composed both pieces.
