He lived alone in a minimally furnished flat with multiple tv's and video cassette recorders researching and preparing scripts and did not learn to drive. One press story was that he had used tins of corned beef recovered from a WW2 shipwreck. A TV documentary featuing interviews with his colleagues stated that he took frequent holidays in France where he was not recognised.
