  • Adele version is best for me Adele has so much soul. But this was cool

  • Adele, a great artist but absolutly crushed by Joan on this one!

  • AS I once heard Peter Case say in the middle of a show, "I wonder what all those people are talking about."

  • Not even a Joan Osborne fan, but shut up, audience, get on your yachts and f**k off !!!

  • No one does it like her... she is great!

  • She needs to get a bunch of orchestrations and get on the Pops Orchestra circuit- just to get a better class of audience. She's way too good for this.

  • hey i've uploaded a video of myself performing this song, please watch it and let me know what you think :)

  • Was just saying how rude the audience are being then read all other comments - ignorant bastards!!!!

  • Love how the sun comes out to light up her face. Beautiful voice, beautiful woman.

  • I keep coming back to this video - noisy crowd regardless, it is the loveliest ballad ever and Joan Osborne sings it the best. Thank you Joan for being such a great singer and for singing that beautiful song. Setting was perfect also just a pity about the wasters crowd.

  • Brilliant performance. She deserved a far better audience.

  • She is a national treasure. And America doesn't even know it. Just unbelievably heartfelt and gorgeously interpreted. She did Adele AND herself proud. Viva Joan!!

  • @godoylego You mean she did Bob Dylan proud right? Not Adele

  • Joan shows the secret to captivating your audience, she could sing anything. I think she is one of the sexiest women vocalist of all time !!!

  • lovely performance

  • SHUT THE FUCK UP I WANNA HEAR HER SINGING! What a rude audience.

  • Love this performance. Comforting to watch after the crazy events we had in Norway yesterday.

  • What a rude audience!

I'm not really a fan of Joan's, but I clicked on this video because I saw that Tracey Wormworth (of The Waitressess) was listed as a band member.

Fan or not, I can't believe this audience.

I've been to performances and had to wait until others performed until my favorite(s) came on stage. While I didn't care for the others, I had enough manners to keep quiet while they were on, no matter indoors or outdoors.

It's common courtesy for the performers and the fans. Geeez!

  • YAK YAK YAK..... Rude.

  • I love Joan Osborne.

  • Joan's is the best version - by a mile!

  • There are too many soul less yuppies in Sausalito! The f'ing crowd reception is to be excepted.

  • So classy Joan - she didn't even let it bother her, she just stayed true to the say. Classy lady AND a great artist!

  • I can't believe how loud the audience is talking during her set. It's like they're treating her like some 5th rate vegas act... assholes.

  • so beautiful with all those masts on the background and the sunset

  • wonderful version... wish we could hear her better ... crappy people.

  • best version wooow

  • Yup, nailed that song ....... super nice!

  • brilliant voice! :)

  • She aced that. Wow.

  • I would rather sing for free to people wanted to hear me, than sing to paying people who just come in to yada yada.

  • i like this better than her original recording. And yes, it's better than Adele's version. This performance is full of soul despite the apparent disregard the audience was showing her.

  • This is one of the most awesome female singers I have ever had the pleasure to see live.....soul soul soul Thank you Joan

  • Joan's is the best version. I just love her.

  • Why would people be chattering when something so pretty is in the air?

  • Dear everyone,

This is the great incredible sensuous JOAN OSBORNE..What a singer!!!!!

You know what's really interesting, Joan is such a great performer, she's not even swayed by any "noise"...She still shines through!

    BEAUTIFUL.

    Love,

    Paul maxwell Godfrey.

     f i n e a r t i s t

  • Got to agree, people who go to gigs and don't show respect by shutting their faces and listening to the acts when they perform, p!ss me off. This is a great version and gets my thumbs up.

  • Wow this is such a great and beautiful song and she sang it amazingly !!! I rarely here this song on the radio. This song to me is like that one guy on that Seinfeld episode that stops elaine from talking to listen to it hahaha!! lol!! ;-))

  • so beautiful. great picture behind her, especially for this song.

  • totally nails that song.......beautifully sang..

  • wow - goosebumps.

  • Adele is shit.

  • rebecca ferguson's version is the best by miles. she sings it like she means every word.

  • rebecca ferguson's version is the best by miles.

  • still think Rebecca Fergusons is better

  • @50lancealot she does better than any of these. u can feel her love.

  • I love the way she sings, her voice flows so naturally .....

  • love bob love adele but joan this is love

  • Excuse, me, shes singing- Stop laughing and talking in the background! I hate that.

  • @george4741 no kidding! how freaking rude! i would be standing there in awe.

  • @george4741 I was gonna say something about that too!

  • @george4741 I totally agree with you..^v^ Recommended them to get back home for talking...hehe

  • @george4741

Yes, She is Amazing! People there are pigs!!!!!

  • Still prefer Adele, but she sounds great as well.

  • Its the first time I've heard this version and all I can say is ....beautiful..........

  • love this

  • there are so many versions of this beautiful song and i must say this is now my second favorite (no need to discuss my fav). joan is incredible and i agree w/ javadude54 but i'd say put ANYONE in freezing cold blowing wind and i doubt the results will be as great.

  • bewautiful.. i would like to hug her. she sings with her soul. God bless her !

  • Yea, must have been 50 degrees? hats a nice day in CHeyenne Wy! Nice Job!

  • I've been on YouTube for months now, and this is the first time I've felt compelled to actually sign up for an account and comment on anything. Beautiful performance, what a talent. Been following her for a long time, thanks for sharing this Derek, over the years you have always been a reliable source of everything Joan. :)

  • Beautiful song and beautiful performance! :0) Love, Tamara xx

    RossiSinger xx

  • Beautiful song, beautiful voice. The words make me cry. When I am in a bluesy music mood I go to my Joan Osborne CD's. This is quite slow for her...but this girl can "kick it"! She's the best since Janis. Great, great talent.

  • I just learned about another singer I had never heard of, thanks, and thanks to youtube! love her

  • The way you see this song makes me feel love. Thank you.

  • I think I like Garth Brooks version better, maybe because his was the first version I heard and got used to. Tough call between Joan Osborne and Trisha Yearwood; Trisha Yearwood gets a slight edge because I'm more familiar with her, no other reason. Joan Osborne has an incredible voice, wow, and beautiful to boot! I used to live in San Diego, and the breezes coming in can be more than a little chilly during certain times of the year!

  • All the posts from this show are great!

  • I really think you all need to watch all she sang prior to this encore performance song. She was freezing and dancing. She is way incredible and most certainly takes top over all I heard sing live on this song. As for beauty...again taking top!that I do know about!LOL

  • Strange! The "warn embrace" is not in her agesture, BUT all the same this is one of my favorites of this song, WHY?

  • Joan Osborne simply awesome!!

  • so glad i stumbled across this! love her voice!

  • This is my favorite version of this classic. Wish the bozos in the background would shut their yappers!

  • @NamathTheLegend GREAT NAME DUDE!!! I love Joan and Joe Namath!!!

  • Wow what a beautiful voice

  • a great singer she needs to be reconozide...and i like this kind of music like 60´s or 70´s...sorry for my bad english...

  • @gomapapel this is from the 90's.

  • great version of that song, outdoors by the chilly SF bay... thanks for posting it!

  • Joan is a singer's singer and a songwriter's angel...such an underrated woman...her musical intelligence shines throughout her exciting repertoire.

Simply one of the best singers around!

  • I cannot imagine ANYONE talking when this woman is singing. What an instrument!

  • sooooo effortless, impressive voice!!

  • she has a beautiful voice, I hadn't heard her before.

  • You could feel the emotion with Joan's voice. Adele's voice is unique but I find her rendition a bit snobby whereas Joan you could hear a WOMAN sing of heartache.

  • She is SO obviously singing this to one she loves. She is phenominal. Singing this the way in which it is meant. Thank you to Bob Dylan for another brilliant tune.

  • Such a gorgeous voice...oh, and a fantastic song. The two go rather well together me thinks.

  • Really nice slide

  • Simply beautiful! Good job with the camera, too!

  • WHat a beautiful voice from a beautiful women. I feel this exact way about a certain someone. I am a blessed person for feeling this way

  • Great rendition of the Brian Ferry hit.

  • @Jordi1962able Bob Dylan wrote this song 1997, it was on his Time out of Mind album released in September that year..... easily over 100 Bob Dylan songs covered by other artists.... type ' List of artists who have covered Bob Dylan songs' into Wikipedia for the full list

  • Comment removed

  • @Jordi1962able How about it's a Bob Dylan hit!? But it is a great rendition!!

  • Joan does this song awesome! But I have to say, Garth Brooks does this song pretty darn good.

  • kevin skinner sang it the best

  • shes cold but a warm voice but shes standing so stiff

  • What a beautiful song which makes me think that those people in the background need to BE QUIET!!

  • She is beautiful!

  • Beautiful!

  • What soul in the face of a crowd that perhaps didn't appreciate the brilliance of what they were hearing- Joan is a treasure.

  • so true, Shipwreck. Joan is special.

  • I Think Garth Brooks' Take on this Song Is Superior To All

that Being said I Do Like This One Better Than Adele

  • It is bizzare to me that her only hit was a song that I thought was horrible...the rest of her stuff is pretty amazing!

  • Wow! She didn't take the straight route from point A to point B on so many notes. Beautiful.

  • Nice version, I loved the acoustic sound to it.

  • Wow, I never realized how beautiful her voice was. only know one song by her & I'm not exactly a fan of it. I need to hear more from her.

Yes Kate Bush is seriously underrated, but then so is Kim wilde!

  • thank u freind

  • Listen to everything from "Relish" EXCEPT that one song and you will have a truer idea of her style. Amazing album, and "One of Us" is by far the worst song on it.

  • For Jack Sonntag. Love, Angela xoxo

  • Col7777..a lot of people talked about others who have covered it because many people have. No one has said a negative thing about Joan's performance. Everyone loves her...what's not to love. As for the audience...from experience I can tell you she didn't hear the audience yakkng away ..it was probably just the people in the proximity of the camera. I love the setting.

  • This song makes me cry and get so emotional-I miss my Hadriana-please pray she comes back to me!!!!!

  • She is so beautiful here!!!! Love you Joan.

  • Joan is amazing. saw her in NH in april '09 and she played this.... so so so so so so so so very good.

  • Watching Anna Teliczan 'To Make You Feel My Love' :)

  • probably THE most underated female performer in history, well except kate bush, but anyway, right on joan.righteous love was bought by maybe 2 people n i am pround to be one,lol

  • This is the best version of this song. I had the chance to see Joan Osborne in O.C NJ in 2001 and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. She is underated as a performer.

  • damn, i was waiting until she ever took her arms of each other :|

  • I don't understand how anyone can compare Adele, a very ordinary vocalist, to Joan Osborne - one of the very best there is. So much more musical and creative. Her own style, not just able to pitch high notes (like a million others). And great Dylan song too. Mr G*d Dylan.

  • I just wish the audience would shut the f**k up.

  • People keep posting who covered it, wrote it etc etc, I don't care, this lady went out there freezing cold and sang from her heart.

Joan is one of the very best vocalists out there, she has an increddible voice and she sings with such feeling.

I can't imagine her so sing a flat note, she is a natural, true talent at it's best.

  • ADELE'S VERSION IS BETTER :)

    much more moving

  • I was thinking the same thing, but she does have a pretty voice.

    1. Adele

    2. Joan Osborne

    3. Trisha Yearwood

  • What a pretty voice...she does this song right on! I want to find more of her singing...

  • I really wish warm you up , Joan :-)

  • I take that back, check out adeles version live, with jools holland on piano :)

  • I didn't realise how many people have covered this song, bob dylan, kelly clarkson, ronan keating, bryan ferry, billy joel to name a few, but out of all of them I think adele has the best version, joan osbourne coming close second, but saying that joan's version was live so hard to compare

  • Bob Dylan didn't cover the song, he wrote it and recorded it first, Garth Brooks was the first BIG cover, everyone else is comes after. Obviously, this isn't a comment about who is best, that kind of opinion, like yours, is a blind alley.

  • Keep your knickers on :s didn't mean to type cover it as such, I meant didnt realise how many people had sung it.

  • I guess you're not going to like me saying I like Adele's version better. It doesn't mean I don't like this version though! I think she does a fantastic job. She changes it up the melody a bit, which sounds great. Also shows what a great musician she is to do that, and have it still sound wonderful.

  • To all the people who shout that ADELE is better. please put your comment in the right place.

Why compare if both performers bring a briliant song in different ways.

Show your respect to adele somewere else (youtube video from adele for example) Don't pull Joan down we don't like that.

  • First time I have heard her version of this song, just wish the crowd would shut up and not be so raucus!!

  • yeah...I'll cast my lot w/ Joan on this song...Trisha Yearwood a close 2nd.

  • Joan is the best! No doubt.

    Hugs..Diane :)

  • The best

  • I just listened to adeles version of this song, and it doesn't come close to joans version. Its bland and boring, where joan puts some real feeling in her version.Lovely song joan.

  • every version of this song is great and they each evoke something different but for me i think i can relate to this best, so soulful, so simple. so true.

  • She nails it.

  • @grainofsandfan adele is a different class singer to her pacific ocean tell her to stand up in the good old glesga weather ur cuckoo

  • Love to much this song,...really can't tell,

because tell all the songs feel no need to say.

  • Bob Dylan wrote it and you can find his rendition on YouTube. Adele has done the very best version so far.

  • I wonder how well Adele would do standing up in a freezing cold wind blowing off the Pacific Ocean like Joan did. I've heard her version, still prefer Joan's, though I admit I'm biased because I think Joan Osborne is one of the best singers there is. I love everything about her voice and how she uses it.

  • @javadude54 Just don't compare them. For me Adeles voice is also very lovely ... and bless Bob Dylan for having written this beautiful song. It is like a frame for all those versions. And look how many people can feel the love coming from it, since it has been covered so often by so many beautiful voices.

  • @javadude54 I wonder how well Bob Dylan would do, seen it's his song?

  • @javadude54 I feel the same about Joan!

  • she's from london she'd be fine

  • no wonder singers/musicians love the Bobster

  • beautiful... soulful performance :)

  • Forget American Idol Kris, forget Adele. Bob Seger wrote it, Joan Osborne totally sings it.

This song needs a voice as rich and mature as hers. She delivers!

  • You mean Dylan, right?

  • Yes, you are right. That's what I get for posting a comment late at night after a couple of glasses of wine :)

  • Somebody gave your original post a pity green thumb. I left it there, having made a few late-night, alcohol influenced gaffs of my own, though not that bad.

  • She's great!

  • Me fascina, como ella se olvida del frío... y se entrega... I'm fascinated by the way she forgets about the cold, and gives herself, to the song...

  • does anybody know how much this song is covered?

  • It has been covered by Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Billy Joel, Neil Diamond, Joan Osborne, Luka Bloom, Josh Kelley, Timothy B. Schmit, Kelly Clarkson, Ronan Keating, Mick McAuley and Winifred Horan (from Solas), Emily Loizeau, Bryan Ferry, Mary Black, Jasper Steverlinck, Ruarri Joseph, Phil Keaggy, Taylor Hicks, Jon Peter Lewis, Adele, and Kris Allen.

i love this version the best. does bob dylan own the rights to this song? if he does, he gave adele permission. joan osborne rules tho

  • liked ur answer... so smart, it is.... shut him down...

  • wikipedia is my friend

  • 1) Kris Allen (american idol) 2) Joan Osborne 3) Adele

That's saying plenty since I LOVE Adele!!!!

  • Kelly Clarkson butchered this song like alot of other ppl did...but i must say this was a nice job...Adele did it best though..i havent heard a version to top Adele's version

  • dylan doens't want this song became a popsong, like adele did

  • dear god..kelly clarkson covered bob dylan?therei is no justice in this world

  • GOOGLE KRIS ALLEN. You'll come to your senses soon enough.

  • I agree, Kelly Clarkson does a horrible cover.

  • This is why I hardly go to concerts anymore! Amazing artists and idiots in the crowd who won't stfu!!

Does anyone know if she ever saw Unchained Melody? Her voice is so beautiful, she should!

  • A sensuous performance s by a beautiful lady! WOW

  • i am so excited, i am going to see Joan tomorrow night.... i hope she plays this!

  • I remember seeing Joan at the Fineline in Minneapolis. I walked by and yelled, "Ladder." She responded with, "Exactly" and began singing Ladder. It was sweet:)

  • what a bunch of idiots that didn't shutup and listen to one of the greatest voices that you will ever hear. Joan you are so powerful, Please don't ever stop!

  • Nice recording. I agree that those ppl should have stfu during the song :) I like the country version, myself. I like the Bob Dylan original but certainly prefer when someone else sings it :)

  • Absoulety one of the most beautiful love songs ever written. Sung by a great singer. They can keep Celine and "BABS" I'll take Joan and Cyndi any and everyday. I'm so pleased that I found this, and thanks to whoever posted it. One complaint, who are all the IDIOTS at this peformance that are talking throughout the song? They need to get slapped, and I'll do it!!!!!

  • well,, it is sausalito, right?

  • good

  • she does have a studio version of this, its on her second album righteous love its the last track
