Thats such a toss up who is the best surfer...Curran to me seems to have the whole surfing spirit more than the rest. Kelly is unreal as well, obviously amazing. Andy Irons deserves mention as well, he also made tearing up a wave look easy. RIP Andy.

He came out of a 3year retirement. Had to surf through the trials in every event to get to the main contest,He won 7 contests that year . in a league of his own. Beautiful soul, a surfer born to ride waves he and waves were one.Smooth, powerful, flawless, flowing, Style A wonder to behold.

I Beleive Curren is the best forehand surfer that has ever lived. Once when i ws on a trip o the gold coast, i went to the tambourine mountains west of the coast an old combie pulled into a camp site i was resting at and in the kombie was a blonde pretty girl, and a Surfer looking dude, he got out and walked alittle ways to my right and stood looking into the bush. It was curren my hero with his french wife good memories.

@AuAspongeAuA I agree kelly is the best contest surfer to ever live, i liked his style back in the 90's but his small boards changed his style. I guess cause i'm 58yrs old i come from the old school style.technically curren forehand (as seen here) and kelly backhand were perfection at there best.Kelly at G-Land genius.

Tom's genius was becoming one with the wave. He is part of it's movement. All his manuveres flow in accordence with the wave's energy. That's what makes him timeless.

I wonder, what motivated tom, to compete, in surf contests..considering, he´s such a low key, low profile, kind of guy..who doesn´t really enjoy, the limelight..

Good question Tom is an introverted personality and usually competitive types are more outgoing.

@extradutyfelt1 Thats right theres a difference Tom is a very introverted personality and he was obviously uncomfortable with the limelight while on the other hand putting on incredible surfing performances in the water. An unusual thing in my experience
