You can notice that at the end of the scene, you see Sara at the far right. When Aronofsky was rolling this scene, he scolded the cameraman because she was not in the center: The cameraman just couldn't stand crying and couldn't move the camera at time. At the end, Aronofsky printed the scene like that.
Requiem is one of the most well directed, well written, well composed, and well acted films of all time. It didn't even get nominated and Ellen Burstyn had the best performance I've ever witnessed. I've seen a good number of films and I've never really been moved. I cried, which never happens. The Awards are bullshit.
@pyro2393 She did receive a "mailing" from the Infomercial. I think it was bullshit, just to get her to buy the "juice". I don't think the "producers" of the show ever intended anyone to be on their show.
I read on IMDB that when the camera goes off focus, it was because the camera man was crying. Even the crew was in tears when this movie was being made.
Two biggest robberies in Oscar history: 1955-Judy Garland-A Star is Born...2001-Ellen Burstyn-Requiem For a Dream...Julia Roberts is more overrated then Lady Gaga.
@theunraveler Just because you have seen stupid people misuse something they had little to no knowledge on doesn't mean it is bad. That won't happen to me because I take mushrooms only once every couple of months. From what you described it sounds like those people take large doses of whatever drug when they aren't even familiar with it. Don't group drug users just because the majority is stupid.
Yeah, Ellen should have definitely got the award, but at least everyone can have peace of mind knowing she was the best regardless of an award or not. Can't take that away.

I have a single mother who raised me and did the best she could to provide for me. Now that I moved out to attend university, I couldn't help but to feel guilty that now she is living alone with no one by her side to care for her and make her feel appreciated every day. This scene is a huge wake up call for me and anyone else to just pause your daily routines and take a minute to do your best to show love and appreciation to your family and loved ones.
@hatemagick Lolwut. Aside from the fact that the whole "gateway drug" theory is bullshit, I've been drinking coffee for as long as I can remember and I've never once considered shooting up heroin or snorting cocaine.
1.28 - 2.00 hit me really hard, i usually dont call my family when im away working in the mines and one day after work i watched this movie , this part made me feel like a scumbag never calling them .but yeah thats def what my mum feels as well so really hits me hard. i watch this part all the time to remind me not to be selfish and pick up the phone
@TheOrangeCrayon132 You meant to say that it's your opinion influenced by brainwashing. That's one of the down sides of having Conservative parents. Don't even try to pull some BS on me saying that it is your own opinion. You get the idea of all NARCOTICS being bad because someone told you they were. It's either your health teacher, family or friends. You gotta' pick at least one.
@buttshex Drugs ARE bad tough guy, I've seen enough crazy men with minds addled by drugs to do crazy things to know that it is bad personally. Believe it or not, up to you...maybe you will believe what I say when you start feeding your face to dog as a result of a bad trip
@bf2hero A movie isn't going to keep your kids off drugs. People fall into the world of drugs for a reason. Ugh, it's sad that people like you don't understand these types of things in the slightest.
@phatandddrfreak exactly, it drives me insane... Both the book and the movie are about addiction, not drugs. Addiction to multiple things, an ideal, food, happiness. Though 3 of the characters are addicted to drugs, the movie is not about those drugs... It's about the addiction...
@bf2hero didnt work for me.. but i have never touched a needle because of it.. and i think thats rock bottom...once the needle goes in thats it for you
This movie is an eyeopener. It made me think about me being an asshole to my mom(I'm still living with my parents) SO children like me should love our parents!! especially our mom whom sacrificed all their times in home for the sake of their family.kudos!!
she was such an amazing actor! really the whole crew..well to keep it short this whole movie wass BAAAMMB! i didnt know what the whole hoopla was about but i definalty know now. brilliant piece of art
During Ellen Burstyn's impassioned monologue about how it feels to be old, cinematographer Matthew Libatique accidentally let the camera drift off-target. This was the take used in the final print.
Me and my friend definitely did this scene for our theatre arts project. This is the most gripping, emotional and shocking movies I have ever seen. I feel so bad for all of the characters whenever I watch this. Beautiful.
The saddest part of this movie is probably when you start to realize that she really believes she'll be on TV, even though it's clear, she will not be, and she destroys herself because she's so sure of it
This i a standard! This is what people generally call acting. This is what it looks and feels like . Aristotle would use this as an example. thank you Ellen Burstyn!
No matter how offbeat his movies are, Darren Aronofsky is a true actor's director!! Cases in point: this, The Wrestler, and Black Swan (according to critics everywhere).
A very depressing scene. It is a hard feeling to think your all alone. We are all on this journey we call life together. So spread the love and happiness around cus it makes the daily struggle worth while.
this movie... i cant really explain... i just love it, its so hard and... so human at the same time... the actors were just brilliant, and the ending... puff... i cried like never before with a movie...
Being someone that has struggled with drug addiction, this movie really is down to earth. It shows the real side of being addicted and how it fucks up everything, and that's why I love it. This movie relates to me on a level no other movie will.
I go through the exact same thing with my mum sometimes, when you want her to be happy but not get annoyed, my mum looks a lot like her aswell. The part after this is the best when he starts crying... made me cry last time I saw it.
im a recovering addict/alchoholic and ive been thru some really tough shit and this movie is such a good depiction of what people go thru on a day to day basis. its not just hollywood re creating some made up story this shit is real and it happens to people every day. its sad man, it really is.
This is the most important scene in the movie because it shows that the son's drug addiction wasn't the only problem in the movie. There are a lot of parents (not just mothers, parents in general) that get hooked on the media that gets beamed into their heads. And when someone is as depressed as her, it's their source of escape from their reality. Kids are being ignored, and parents aren't showing true love.
This movie is great. It combined up and coming talent like Jeniffer Connelly and Jared Leto with one of the previous generation's best, Ellyn Burstyn.
Ellyn should have won the oscar, even though she already has one. We begin watching thinking "oh, some guy and his friends...and his mom...", and we come out feeling depressed as we are unable to help any of them, including the innocent mother.
the depiction of , at first, a manic depresive individual and, latter, a psychotic one, is almost perfect from Elen Burstyn. This scene is just a masterpiece, with the woman breaking down for the first time, and her son seeing her mother in such a pathetic state, realizing everything -including his mother and him- feels so wrong. It is also the last time they see eachother, before the colapse.
you retards! ahaha wake up guys. The refined , subtle and stylish dialogues you r searching for, bear no relation with the reality of simple people like these. Simple people talk like that, melodramatic etc, perhaps even more, especially when they are one step from the psychiatric clinic like the character of Ellen Burstyn in this film. It is clear you are suffering from elitism, expecting from films only thoughtfull and novel reactions. Finally you are missing the point.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
what terrible writing. wahhhhhhh im somebody now! wahhhhhhhh its a reason to get up in the morning! wahhhhhhhhhh im lonely! How about some subtlety? People don't act this way in real life, especially when talking to their children.
this scene was so heartbreaking it makes me wish every time i could help her. i know she's a character but her performance is so moving i just can't help it.
everybody wants to be on T.V., its the place to solve problems...a quick make over and scripted story and you'll be sunshine under those famous lights.
This movie was amazing. I don't know any movie that has impacted me like this one. There aren't really words to explain how awesome it is. Jared Leto did a great job and so did all the other actors. The score was great and the whole entire movie was moving and realistic.
This scene alone is worth the entire movie; it gives away the desperation and loneliness Sara (Ellen Burstyn) was going thru. They say that she got so into character on it that she even made the Director of Photography cry.
When lamenting about being old, she made him cry, and he accidentally shifted the camera. This was used in the final cut of the film, in place of the originally intended still shot.
This scene makes me cry every single time. She is possibly the saddest, and one of my favorite, characters. The whole time you watch the movie you really want it to work for her.
@mysweetrequiem Ellen Burnstyn (Sara Goldfarb) receieved an Oscar nomination for this. I think she plays a great role and should go home withe that statue!
This movie is realistic. Different from typical 'Hollywood movies'. In that kind of movies people wear to much make-up and look perfect. This movie makes you see how fucked up life can be as an addict. It's one of the best movies I've ever seen.
I don't think that realistic is the right word. Just because you are addicted to a drug doesn't mean you'll end up like the characters end up in the movie. But that doesn't make the movie irrelevant. Not at all. This shows what happens when you are not cautious enough about drugs. The idea is not that drug is evil. The idea is that being addicted brings you to be incapable of taking care of yourself. Being irresponsable is the danger.
I do think that's the right word, because realistic doesn't mean that it's the only option. And this shows the depressing side of drugs, in a realistic way. Ofcourse it can end different.
The movie illustrates the triumph of addiction over the human spirit. You wont end up EXACTLY like the characters, but the nature of addiction is that it sucks all else it into its ravenous jaws. The drug isn't evil, but it's certainly the catalyst for swallowing up life - and the truth is no one can really handle it (even when they think they can). The hardcore drugs are anti-life. You'll always be on the verge of the precipice, even if you fool yourself into believing youre not....
Ellen Burstyn is most of why this movie is my absolute favorite, hands down. It's depressing as hell, but it's SO.DAMN.GOOD. I get something new out of it every time I watch it. :)
The interesting is that her son warned her when he was still lucid.
She should've listened to her son

This is the most important scene in the movie because it shows that the son's drug addiction wasn't the only problem in the movie. There are a lot of parents (not just mothers, parents in general) that get hooked on the media that gets beamed into their heads. And when someone is as depressed as her, it's their source of escape from their reality. Kids are being ignored, and parents aren't showing true love.

can you please put up the part right before this when he first comes in the cab?=D

Not all parents are disconnected from their children...
Everyone has a breaking point and a lonely person who feels they arent living will get depressed and find solace any way possible.

what terrible writing. wahhhhhhh im somebody now! wahhhhhhhh its a reason to get up in the morning! wahhhhhhhhhh im lonely! How about some subtlety? People don't act this way in real life, especially when talking to their children.

everybody wants to be on T.V., its the place to solve problems...a quick make over and scripted story and you'll be sunshine under those famous lights.

This movie was amazing. I don't know any movie that has impacted me like this one. There aren't really words to explain how awesome it is. Jared Leto did a great job and so did all the other actors. The score was great and the whole entire movie was moving and realistic.

Wonderful. Best movie ever.

@mysweetrequiem Yeah it's extremely sad what happens to her. I think I shed a tear when she went to the tv station.

@mysweetrequiem I felt the same way. I kind of felt like she was my mother and I wanted her to be okay in the end.

This movie is realistic. Different from typical 'Hollywood movies'. In that kind of movies people wear to much make-up and look perfect. This movie makes you see how fucked up life can be as an addict. It's one of the best movies I've ever seen.
bulletformyrocker 2 years ago 8
I don't think that realistic is the right word. Just because you are addicted to a drug doesn't mean you'll end up like the characters end up in the movie. But that doesn't make the movie irrelevant. Not at all. This shows what happens when you are not cautious enough about drugs. The idea is not that drug is evil. The idea is that being addicted brings you to be incapable of taking care of yourself. Being irresponsable is the danger.
insanej3 2 years ago
I do think that's the right word, because realistic doesn't mean that it's the only option. And this shows the depressing side of drugs, in a realistic way. Ofcourse it can end different.
bulletformyrocker 2 years ago
