This is just because of the blind spot in our eyes. Moving closer or further will cause the light from the object the shine on the blind spot thus appearing as if the object is not there. This is because the blind spot does not have any photosensitive cells

The human eye has a blind spot in both eyes because there's a small hole in the optical disc where the optical nerve feeds through to receive information from the eye itself. The reason you don't see this until tests like this, is because your brain "guesses" as to what is needed to fill in. Your range of vision (when you have both eyes open) overlap so you don't see it at all.
