  • Oh My God. that guy rockin' the American Flag shirt w/ piano keys!! priceless.

  • The angels are grooving hard to this song, especially the tall angel in black on the right, and the audience notices and picks up on it. Their dancing looks and feels spontaneous; a welcome addition to this stellar performance. Apparently Pat heard and felt the tall angel's passion - note the acknowledgement at the end. Nice!

  • dam good job live. i see dennis yost and lots of other great singers.

  • He's thinking "I still got this shit."

  • Fantastic live version well done

  • FANTASTIC !!!

  • I love this video of Pat Upton. Every day a new day of loving this song! It makes me happy listening and dancing to it!

  • Nedra Talley @ 2:23? Of the Ronettes?

  • @gooboo1000

Yep, Nedra Talley Ross is part of the group.

  • Excellent performance aided by the three singing angels. I have watched/listened to many of the performances from this show. Most of the singers acknowledge the angels at some point. I'm sure that all of the singers really enjoy having the angels and this OUTSTANDING band behind them.

  • The man can STILL sing one of my favorite songs.

  • @gooboo1000

Well-stated. I agree completely, and believe the performers would, also.

  • My cousin still has it :) way to go Pat :)

  • fantastic voice...reminds me with my friend in the philippines. mr ramir garcia honrubia..gifted with an angelic voice.,..

  • wow you'd never know that voice came from that man....then again today's pop music expects less beauty in sound than it does beauty in people's appearences

  • @looker768

Very well-stated. While making a long drive yesterday I was forced to listen to the radio for awhile. I kept switching stations looking for something decent, even though I knew better. It seemed like they were all playing over-produced songs by female artists, and they all sounded the same -- uninteresting, and not memorable.

  • One of the first and best albums I have in my collection. Pat has such a special voice and every song has his mark on it.

  • Fantastic! I want to fall in love, again!

  • Pat sounds great, the talent in this room is incredible and the tall brunette background singer on the right is hot.

  • Oh my god! Pat Upton's voice hasn't change since the first time he sang this one in Columbia records back in '69!!! indeed i love you more today pat than yesterday!

  • The world could use more positive messages, such as those expressed in this song. Coupled with a great backup band and singers, Pat is on top of his game, especially considering his age. The whole step lowered key does not diminish in any way the brilliance of the lead vocal. I've done my own version at several weddings over the years and the song causes folks of all ages to smile!

  • i just watched the vid of the 1969 performance. his voice sounds very good considering.

  • who was the horn section. they missed notes left and right.

  • His voice is still sensational! This is one of my all time favorite songs! Thank you for posting the live video.

  • Pat is actually my 4th cousin! I love this song so much and feel blessed to be related to someone so talented and graceful in the art of music. (:

  • Many thanks for bringing forth and reminding me of this 'not so silly' love song. Bless Pat Upton and his Spiral Staircase for creating the original. Sung with Orchestra is quite fetching and uplifting, too.

Was wondering what the occasion was presented in the video; looks like Pat Upton was just one of many musical talents seated there, yes???

Regardless, LOVE is always! Thanks again.

  • @neilemac

This was a tv special that most people missed. Yes, the audience is almost totally comprised of other artists. Check other videos on my channel here to see most of them performing.

  • I only decovered this song by accident from a Ally Mcbeal show. He wasn't the one performing it. Wish he had been. I think he's totally sexy even though i'm much younger.Keribare

  • I don't like this, I LOVE THIS

It takes a little time watch all of the preformaces but I can't stop watching them.

Thanks alot for the post and getting back so quick on a couple questions.

  • The Jive Bunny want to be your friend on Facebook! and forever!

  • Nice to see the angels groovin' behind Pat while he sings.

  • I'm only 29 but I grew up listening to this song eversince I was 3..My father always play spiral staircase in the Philippines every morning before he goes to work..It's like our alarm clock so we won't be late for school.. :-) I miss those moments.. It always melts my heart every time I hear this song. Every beat of this song corresponds to every memories that will linger through out my last breath... That money can't buy.. Thank you dear God for bringing people who makes good music... :)

  • Mario Andretti in the background

  • One dislike??? Hello????

  • Amazing that his voice is still intact. The background singers could use some work though. Not bad at all though.

  • im 14 yrs old when i started liking this music it reminds the era of 70s. boy !!! one of the best song and great ever!! happy to see pat upton in this video....never endingsounds like this. where's the other grp!!!

  • Wow! He sounds as awesome! Killer.

But where is the dancing bass guy?

  • My favorite one hit wonder of all times, I wish spiral staircase had made a couple of albums I think they would've done great.

  • Sure looked like Dick Putan!!! LOL

  • Love all these posts. Thanks very much. One small tip -- definitely not a criticism, I come here to have fun -- the group's name is spelled Starecase,

  • @13loomisst

Thanks! I appreciate the comment and have made the correction!

  • @DooWopJoe try staircase

  • @snicotero7

Nope, I have it spelled correctly. It is Spiral Starecase.

  • GO HEAD PAT! awesome

  • 1:30, background notes make me hurt! She sings a "C" over an A7. NOT A GOOD TIME FOR A SHARP 9 LADY!

  • @amcsdmi seems to fit perfectly...

  • @amcsdmi Lighten up! Sounds good to me.

  • what's Buddy Ryan doing there? at 1:00

  • ver

  • He looks like mike myers

  • @0:06 - Former Mexican President Vicente Fox

  • @sbarajasjr

Ha! Not quite -- it is Carl Dobkins, Jr. LOL

  • @DooWopJoe: Just kidding of course, but boy am I glad to see these videos on here. I am proud to say I am the only 20-something I know who has all these songs memorized and constantly playing on my iPod. My father did a great job of introducing me to everything from Berry (Chuck and Len) to Gary Puckett and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. I love it all!!

  • How can you not sing-a-long in your car as you hear this! Pat sounds fantastic 30 years removed from original.

  • Thanks for posting this-I grew up with this music-wonderful!!

  • That's one sweet song by a great singer. This is the first 45 record I bought when I arrived in Japan in 1970.

  • Where's the dancing bass guitarist. Would have been a classic if he showed up.

  • @62muki Spiral Staircase bass player Bobby Raymond is dead :( He died in the eighties if can remember correctly..

  • Dislike?...No way

  • What a great song! Every part of this song is awesome: the keyboards, bass line, the happy melody, the horn section, the vocal part and of course the lyrics are just tremendous! One of those happy 60's songs that makes a person just smile, snap their fingers and dance a little.

As a shy kid, I'd spend lots of my time with my little AM radio and even tied it to my bike! Awesome song, awesome memories!

  • '99 magic here

'69 original magic,,,,,9 volt transistor radio, an ear piece, am radio only, wgh hampton, virginia, 12 yrs old.

thanks Pat and the thousands over the years that wrote, produced and performed

our pop-soundscape from North America and Europe.

seemed so effortless,,,,,but you know it isnt.

    thanks forever

    jctoronto

  • @jctorontojctoronto I second that emotion....... my thoughts exactly!

  • Some of those notes Pat was hitting are pretty high. Even though he's older he can still hit those notes w/ no problem. Bravo! Thanks Joe!

  • Sounds great

  • ZERO dislikes..let's keep it that way...OK?

  • One of the best voices ever.

  • Another great post..........

  • Who is the backup singer in the middle

  • @dnye37683

As I told you on another video, it is Vicki Carrico. Please do not continue asking me this question on other videos.

  • @dnye37683 it looks like melissa manchester

  • since i hear this music i really like while i was in my country the philipiness now im in america still im listening on it i feel young every time i can hear it.

  • Very nice Joe. If you check out The Browns-Three Bells-Live, you'll see some of the exact same people in the "audience". Same show?

  • @THB79

Yes, it is the same show. If you go thru my other videos, you will see 25 or so from this program, by most people you see in the audience.

  • This is UNIQUE stuff thanks a lot DooWop Joe!

  • DooWopJoe-- I have enjoyed listening to these songs and the video footage, and about Ricky Nelson, if I remember correctly , I would like to say it was New Year's Eve, "1985", Ricky Nelson was to be in Texas for a performance that night, I was going to listen to it on the radio, I was sitting by the radio, when the station got very quiet and HubCap Cotter , came on to inform us Ricky had just been killed. It was a very sad nite in Texas.

  • This is why I wish I was around during that tiime

  • @mattvj5 While I agree the music was better back then let's not forget the social unrest of the time. Not that things are that great today but at least there have been certain improvements since the 60s. Even people I knew who grew up during WWII said the 60s were worse. One thing happened after another and no one could an end to it all in sight.

  • @mjg032 good point, although I think some improvements are biting us in the ass right now.

  • @mattvj5 True. Just have to make the best of what you got no matter what era it is. Life just seems to be that way.

  • @mjg032 at least we didn't have fox news then.

  • @totoaklan I dunno. I think of it as camp entertainment. So bad and ridiculous it ends up being funny than anything else! Unless someone's an idiot and takes it seriously it's rather harmless. Back then there was also George Wallace who was much more dangerous IMHO!!!!!

  • @mjg032 but the 60s were the best of times for me. the social unrest only affected the war draftees and other older folk. gas was cheap, food was tasty, tv cartoons were marvelous and the music was superfine. the world was so new.

  • @totoaklan I guess it depends who you were and what your social situation was. I have a friend who's a 60 year old black man who grew up in Jackson Mississippi and talked about the hardships growing up in the South at that time. Not that he said todays perfect but still has painful memories of that era in our country's history,

  • Darn. I was so hoping to hear Pat's voice at 1:12 in one of my favorite notes he and only he can hit. Then the backup singers chimed in and drowned him out. :/ so upset. Wish it was just him. solo. HIS voice is so amazing!

  • i'm in my 20s and I love this song for like a decade now! :)

  • Absolutely incredible tune and what a voice!!!!!

  • Pat does a great job with this song from 1969 which he wrote. Definately one of the best oldies of all-time! Excellent!

  • pat still sounds pretty good from his video from the sixties...Also go LEN BARRY'S SONG...........123 ,,,,,,, same people in audience different singer..same band and back up singers...still a great song

  • Great clip. Thanks for posting it. He still sounds fantastic and this song is a classic.

  • So what was his just a get together from all the great singers from the past? whayever it is it good listeing

  • @hidoll22

Yes, this was a tv special that had 6 hours of video including songs by all the performers, and stories of their recording careers and lives.

  • man, what talent. so cool to see this. thanks for sharing.

  • @DooWopJoe - Thanks for posting all of these videos. I'm 31 but grew up listening to a lot of these songs going to my Grandparent's house every Sunday. Such great songs, and by the the faces of the performers they all look like they had a great time.

  • I dreaded listening to Pat after all these years, but DAMN, the man still, sounds good and sings as clear as ever! Plus, he's still a little cutie! This song is one of the best ever!!

  • Great performance of a classic tune.

  • OMG!!! What a great performance!!! Thanks for posting!!!!

  • A drop down in key but Pat sounds as great as always.

  • WOW! He is as terrific today as he was when he first sang it! AMAZING!

  • MY FAVORITE SONG

  • Dayum....Pops is still belting it out !

  • Joe,what are these sessions called in case i am looking for them?Thx.

  • I never saw this on TV, I really love watching this, where could you get the CD

  • Pat Upton with his signature voice.

  • Thanks for uploading these videos. I never forgot these performances, after I saw them on TV years ago. They are awesome.

  • Man, this gentleman is STILL bulletproof! He's as good today as he was in 1969. My hat is off to you, Pat. You're still knockin' 'em out of the park! Wahoo!

  • I love this song then,, & still love it now even with a few yrs, the vocals are still there,

  • If you are going to be a one hit wonder it does not get any better than this one-

This guy's vocals made the song great in"69 and he still makes it great here- Thanks for posting.

  • He must be in his mid-60s, yet looks amazing. He looks handsome, has a full set of hair, and looks youthful and vibrant. He has an incredible voice after almost 50-years since this song was released. This is the most incredible set of live classic performances I've ever seen. I've watched most of the Doo Wop and R&B on the PBS, but was not even aware of these classic performances.

Thanks so much DooWop Joe for all of the great memories. Where do I purchase this live DVD set at ??

  • i love this song

  • I could just slaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap that man for still hitting those notes!!!!!! (That is a true compliment from where I come from. I means that someone has done such a good job at something that the only thing left to do is slap them because nothing else expresses the emotion that you feel. Might not make sense. I TRIED to explain! LOL)

  • the second i hear this song my mind flashes back to im in a 1966 white covertible monza spider corvair. and a lady where we lived took my brother and i to the suburbs to a swimming pool , she wore one of those little silk babuskas. and she is singing it out. R.I.P. Cathy Z. Drohegda

  • what a voice!. that was amazing pat.

  • Just love this song and version....BellaƸ̵̡Ӝ̵Ʒ

  • Excellent! He's still got his voice. A perfect love song.

  • Never get tired of this classic song ! What a voice !

  • 5***** It was a few great songs like this that I enjoyed in the late 60s, probably 1 out every 20! Great post Joe!

  • Thanks for sharing!! Pat sounds GREAT!!!!!

  • Pat can still sing the notes perfectly

  • I watched this concert on you tube.

    What strikes me is this:

Back in the "day" so called white and black music

    were so similar.

Today we are actually more segregated musically than

    any time in our history.

    I think that sucks.

    JMO

  • @golyg You are so correct. There was no difference back than. It didn't matter you love the song.

  • @golyg

Can't help it that rap is not the in thing for the black community

  • Pat only lives a few miles from me here in Alabama. Rick Nelsons last performance was at Pats club here in December 1985.

Pats voice is as good as ever.

  • i just downloaded this video.

pat's version is way better than gold finger's and the rest i've seen.

thanks for upping the video ''DooWopJoe'', much respect.

  • Wonderful! Pat sounded great here! I was playing with Gary Puckett back in the 80's and we did a show in Arkansas with Pat and the great Dee Clark ("Raindrops"). That same night Rick Nelson was playing at Pat's club at another location. I believe Rick and his guys went down in that awful plane crash right after.

  • Wow. Interesting comments. I remember hearing the news announce about Ricky. As I recall, it was on New Year's Eve. Very tragic.

  • I couldn't swear to it, Joe, but I thought maybe it was a day or so before that. I only say it because I think the next day we flew to Phoenix and played a gig that I think was a NY's Eve at a resort there on a bill with Bill Haley's Comets.

It sure was tragic. I remember it cast something of a pall on things. Speaking of Dee Clark, not too many years later he passed away after a rougher stretch than such a great talent and sweet guy deserved.

But -we keep on rolling, Joe.

    Take it easy

  • @pyannaguy Did you come on the Caribe 1 cruiseship where I was working?

  • @npwd I don't think so....I don't mean to invade your privacy, but I don't know who you are. I was Gary' P's keyboard guy (and flute/sax) way back, then, around the time Rick Nelson's plane went down.

  • @pyannaguy It's OK, I worked on cruiseships and in 1991 Gary came on and we had a blast with him and his band. I was just wondering if you were one of them. Now back to pat Upton...still sounds awesome eh!

  • still hits the high notes. impressive.

    love this song

  • Fantastic!! I have this DVD set and it is Great!! So many wonderful artists performing their hits and they had such a Great time just being together! Thanks for posting!! The late Ray Peterson is also on the DVD! What a Treasure!!

  • Yes, this whole session was fantastic. I have posted the Ray Peterson part, and many others. Most people have never seen these performances, and they are not available for purchase anymore.
