Auto tune isn't the same as Talkbox. Talkbox originally was used with a guitar and a tube had to be placed in your mouth in order to get the effect. Later on it was added to a keyboard and the rest is history. It's alot harder to play with a Talkbox. That's why most people use the Autotune nowadays.

this is a talk box. you need a synth, or any sound making instrument that outputs sound, a hard housed effector that transfers the input from the synth, and condenses it to fit through a tube that goes in your mouth.

T-pain uses a program called Autotune, but it was not intended to sound robotic. they over did it to make it sound that way. May artists use 'voice correction' software and you would never be able to tell. I personally like Melodyne 3 better than autotune

This has probably already been mentioned, but this a talkbox, not a vocoder. A talkbox runs the speaker of an instrument through a sealed box and a tube, which is put in the singer's mouth. The sound of the instrument comes out of the tube into their mouth, and their mouth shapes the sound and is recorded through the microphone. A vocoder takes input from a microphone and uses that input to shape the sound generated by the keyboard, which is then played out of the keyboard amp.

I hope you weren't referring to Teddy Riley. Even though he has rapped on and produced many hip hop hits he's also done fantastic R&B and pop work. He's a multiplatinum producer and a bonafide hit maker. As for the Vocoder, you have to be able to play an instrument in order to use it (unlike Auto Tune). Teddy is a musician with chops.
