  • bjork sent me here too

  • i came here because....their daughter is my professor haha how crazy, now i have to harass her with questions next class.

  • Proud to be argentine! love u Björk

  • Thumbs up if you came from Björk's post.

  • Björk sent me here as well, but honestly, it's annoying seeing people post that. Most people who say that care more about the fact that someone sent them to the video than they care about the video itself.

  • @Fueledbychapstick come off it mate

  • Bjork sent me here!

  • Björk sent me here. :)

  • ...also why does the shot of Dutoit flipping the pages at 1:17 make me think of Stanley Kubrick?

  • @RH98 That's EXACTLY what came to my mind as I watched that before scrolling down to read comments! Looks like a shot from Clockwork or Strangelove =P.

  • God... the way she looks up and smiles at 2:05 absolutely melts me. Must try and remain objective...

  • @RH98 I KNOW RIGHT?!

  • @RH98 Indeed, shes a darling hmm? I wish Argerich was more well-known, she is SUCH a virtuoso. Messing around with the Liszt @ 1:30 sounds like she can REALLY play that sonata incredibly- sounds very nice at the slightly faster tempo. I was getting excited to hear the octaves and she stopped!!! =(

  • @Gibson29 She is well known... She is one of the most famous pianists of the 20th century.

  • elle est une géante, et elle et très belle :)

  • Wow, I was born in June 1972. This clip gives me strange vibes...

  • Je savais pas que Martha parle français aussi.....

  • gorgeuse!

  • I wonder why they got divorced...?

  • @chutdigadut

Well, well, they had a big fight on a plane to Japan and upon arriving at Haneda-Airport Martha flew back to Suisse, leaving her husband alone in Japan.

All planned concerts in Japan at that time were cancelled and they eventually got divorced. You can only guess why they had a fight!!

I´m sure till then they were happily married.

  • @55253ya oh WOW..... thats too bad. Thanks!

  • ... and it changes... we give littles glances at each other to know if it works well or not... as far as I'm concerned I always ask, after the first movement I speak... and Charles does not like this at all... when we make a concerto, right after the first movement, I ask: "how was it?"

  • @MrLacidaremlamano thank you VERY much for your translations! well all appreciate it very much

  • - It's nearly extatic sometimes... it's really extraordinary

    To Martha Argerich:

    - and what defines the relationship with the conductor, when you play? is this like a relationship between a master and...

    - no, that's not it at all... no... it's an understanding... or it's a misunderstanding... it depends ( she uses the term "entendre", which both means understand and hear in french, she plays on the double meaning of the word)...

    - and we stimulate each other too... or we get into a fight

  • - You can play a little violin...

    - oh yes, that's it... I'm talking about being a conductor...

    - the physical contact with music, you have it when you are in front of your orchestra...

    - oh yes... that... these are other pleasures. a pleasure of a greater kind. because you're not really responsible for this. you come to a peculiar instant when you really swim among things you create but not really make them at the same time... you see... you are like wrapped...

  • - ... after I had played, for the next time, so I was always in a rush... at the last minute...

intermission (First concerto op 11 Chopin)

Charles Dutoit / MA / Interviewer

    - ... as a matter of fact, I find in the occupation of conductor something I miss terribly, the true contact with the instrument... I mean...

    - ... to make music...

    - yes, to make music spontaneously. when you feel like... if I feel like playing music right now

    - he can't

    - what can I do?

    - I can work on a score...

  • - ... in the "concours international d'exécution musicale de Genève"?

    - at 16

    - yes at 16...

    - and you won the first prize...

    (intermission)

    - what do you remember from that competition?

    - Oh... it was my second competition... because, two weeks before I had done the Bolzano competition in Italy

    - which you won as a matter of fact

    - yes... that was my first... well, that was all very new for me because it never thought I was going to pass through the first rounds so I never worked

  • - and what did one make you play at this time? - oh... plenty of things... for instance, the "facile" sonata by Mozart - at what age did you play that? - in any case... I played that in public, like this, at 4... that... and then that (and she plays the minute waltz by Chopin)... that - and then you began to work very seriously... - at age five - at age five... - yes - You left Argentina at what age? - thirteen... thirteen years old. - and a short time afterwards you were involved...
  • Charles Dutoit (to himself, looking at the score): - That's weird...

    Interviewer / Martha Argerich:

    - You are going to play that in a concert soon

    - Yes... in Prague.... and I've just played it, too, before going on holidays...

    - hmm... you are very very young but you already have a very long career.

    - ... not so young...

    - You first learned the piano at age... you were still in the cradle, right?

    - yes, yes... more or less... at age two and a half, by ear... like this, with one finger.

  • goddammit, that was the best interpretation i've heard of all those pieces.

  • Is there someone who knows if it's possible to find this video , completely , on a dvd . Since the first time i've seen her , i love her ; Beauty , majesty , perfect pianist , all , She's got all . How loving another Woman ?

  • She's soo funny at the end of the interview. They seem to disagree on eveything.

  • damn I gotta learn some french

  • To be smitten by a woman from the past... Gah, perhaps it'll inspire me as a pianist. :P

  • Martha and the pimp

  • What a talent!!! The easy way she plays every piece shows how she has to be put into lendary pianists list. Absolutely fantastic.

  • You write okay for a dolt.

  • Oh my, she is gorgeous!

  • She is being asked at what age she began the piano, what pieces did she learn (she demonstrates), then at what age did she start performing and playing in competitions (video extracts). Later in the clip, Dutoit talks about missing the physical contact with an instrument when conducting. Then Argerich is asked what the relationship is between herself and a conductor during a performance. She muddles a bit, but indicates it's more collaboration by eye contact than following directions.

  • --Please, Someone that speaks in french????

Can please translate what is she saying?

--Alguien que hable francés, puede traducir lo que dice?

--Jemanden die Franzosich spricht, kann bitte es übersetzen??

  • @CxC2007 Translation part one

    Martha : ... B minor.

Journalist : Are you going to play it soon in a concert ?

M : Yes, in Prague. Moreover I'll have to play it too, I mean before the holidays too.

J : You're very very young where as you have a very long career...

    M : Not so young.

J : You have started the piano, when... In your cradle ?

M : Yes, around 2 and a half doing C D like that with one finger, little songs alone. And at 3...

J : What did you play in this time ?

  • @CxC2007 Translation part 2 M : Lots of things ! For example the "easy sonata" from Mozart. [She plays it.] J : How old were you playing this ? M : Well, in public, at 4. This, and this. [There she plays Chopin's waltz.] J : And you've worked very seriously since 5 years old. M : At 5, yes. J : When did you leave Argentina ? M : 13. J : And it's a a few time after that you played the national musical execution competition. M : At 16 actually. J : Where you got the first prize. M : Yes. [Video]
  • @CxC2007 Translation part 3

J : Which memory do you keep from this competition ?

M : Oh, it was my second competition. Because 15 days before I did the Mauzanne one in Italy...

    J : That you won.

M : Yes. It was my first one. And... Well it was all new for me. I was never waiting to cross the eliminating heats so I was never working, after I played, for the next one. So I was always taken by surprise, at the last minute, I didn't prepare. [Chopin concerto]

  • @CxC2007 Translation part 4 Charles : Being a conductor, I miss the true contact with the instrument. I mean... Uh... M : Making music. C : Yes, making music, spontaneously. If I wanted to play music now, I couldn't ! M : He can't ! C : You understand, I can go working a score... J : Some violin. [The journalist was dumb here.] C : Yeah that's it... M : Yeah that's it... C : I'm talking about being a conductor, ok. J : You have the physical contact when you're working with your orchestra.
  • @CxC2007 Translation part 5

C : That is another pleasure. A greater one, I think. Because you're not really responsible, you arrive to some moment where you're swimming in some things you create without really doing it yourself, you see, you're wraped in some scores, it's close to the ecstasy sometimes. It's extraordinary.

J [to Martha] : What is the relationship with the conductor when you play ? Is there a relationship from master to...?

  • @CxC2007 Translation part 6

M : No ! There's not that at all. It's an agreement, or it's a disagreement, it depends.

    C : Yes but...

M : And we can stimulate each other too, or "bring in in feet", it depends... And it changes, we look at each other, and see if it works well, if it doesn't work well. I always ask after the first movement, I talk... [to C]

    C : Oh yes.

M : He doesn't like it at all because when he's thrown in a concerto after the 1st movement I immediatly ask... So, how was it ?

  • what about the enormous papers? scores? by the way, mrs. argerich is a serious claim against time passing

  • lol aww she was soo cute back then haha and STILL beastly on piano

  • About K.511... Oh great) I didn't expect such a quiet interpretation from Argerich... What a surprise...!! though I dont like her Chopin, as always....

Thanks for uploading!! It shows how happy she was then...

  • TOO GOOD

  • This has to be one of my favorite clips on Youtube. It's great to see a vintage clip of a genius in her younger days. I cannot believe how people age (seeing her now), she's like a totally different person. So sweet and easy going. What a career.

  • does anyone know what she's saying?!

  • She started to play the piano when she was two and a half.

When she was 4, she played Mozart's K545.

She began to play the piano seriously when she was 7.

She left home when she was 13.

  • chopin concerto no.1. Also one of my favorite. The most melodramatic of all piano concertos.

  • She was (and is) a knockout, in addition to being a killer pianist. Wonder why they got divorced.

  • she is also crazy a little bit:) and too strong of a personality...personality clash is one reason

  • Definitely the only smoker I would ever have chased...

    :)

Martha was in a class of her own.

  • IS in a class of her own.....ditto on the smoking thing :P

  • Oh she still is, of course! :)

I was just trying to contain my enthusiasm to the video at hand... lol...

In fact, my wife and I just saw Martha with the San Francisco Symphony this past weekend (she upended the place with her Ravel G Major).

The queen of the forest is very much alive!

  • Ohh! She was in San Franciso recently??!!

    How did I miss that?!!

well I'm glad you and your wife got to enjoy Martha!

  • Ottimo

  • Bellissimo video :)

  • Martha Argerich played the following pieces in the video at the time mark as indicated:

    00:00 Mozart: Rondò in a-minor K.511

    01:30 Liszt: Sonata b-minor

    02:50 Mozart: Sonata in C-major K.545

    03:05 Chopin: Waltz Op.64/1

    04:12 Chopin: Piano Concerto #1, mvt#1 Op.11

  • @win081 Thank you :)

  • She is a talent !!!!

  • shes speaking french? i thought she was born in buenos aires

  • she speaks a bunch of languages, like Rubinstein and most great pianists.

  • Since I started the study of piano, martha has been my myth,my dream and the absolute reference. My nickname Argerich68,which wants to be an homage to her and not an attempt to be compared to her. Thank you! Annarita Santagada

  • thanks for this wonderful recollection!
