the Incas mixed a number of psycho active herbs with their tobacco, especially that used in religious ceremonies. They were also into strong alcoholic mixtures, also containing psycho active herbs.
Tobacco was, I believe, exclusive to the western hemisphere. The plants now grown around the world started in South and central America although it was used by natives in many parts of N America when Europeans arrived. It was the first cash crop from the colonies.
Im pretty sure the olden day tobacco used by indians had many times more nicotine to produce visions or just have a powerful effect. This tobacco was a different species that is called nicotiana rustica.
its nice that you all (tobacco smokers) find tobacco to be so relaxing, or as you put it, "its effect'. What do you think Cannibis does? You guessed it...
I thought that Iain Gately did a good job with, Tobacco: A Cultural History of How an Exotic Plant Seduced Civilization. Well worth a read, IMO.
I would imagine that the earliest use was probably just sucking on a quid made of fresh tobacco leaves. I'm sure they recognized the value of nicotine's mild stimulant properties: mood elevation, energy, and appetite suppression.
I know they used to do double blasts of dried snuff using "Y" shaped "tooters". How cool is that?
I was just talking about this with my friend. We were talking about how some people used it for medicine and cerimonies and now the white man has turned it in to something totally different~
great story Mark, thanks for sharing that little snippet from the book. These ancient civilizations always knew how to lavish life's luxuries upon you, before smiting you down!
Thanks for sharing that, man! So what forms of tobacco do you pefer? I smoke cigarettes and dip mostly but have a cigar now and then too. I guess I should try pipes too.
I'm a pipe man almost exclusively. Not into cigs, cigars are expensive, and chew kicks my ass! I sniff a little snuff here and there too ....just to keep it interesting.
Thanks for gettin back to me man - Now I'm more interested in trying pipes. Let me know what you recommend for a beginner. I'll have to try sniffin snuff - I've only dipped/chewed it.
hello Mark,,great read indeed..i hv just mentioned to Kel about the best read i hv abt this subject was in the dunhill pipe book and the facts are certainly matching the one you have demonstrated
Great vid....i read somewhere...although i have NO idea where...its just stuck in my head that they think a form of snuff predates smoking tobacco...granted it was more of a hallucinogen...probably mixed with god knows what....i took a anthropology course on Native Americans last semester ...and they covered tobacco use...thanks for the vid...cheers
I don't believe it's hard to find. I found my copy for $6 at a used book store. It looks like it's been reprinted several times as well. Glad you enjoyed it Tim!
Hey thank you Kel, for bringing up such a great topic. I love history too. It's really amazing to have a "hobby" that connects us to so many people and places from so long ago. Not many practices endure time as well as tobacco use has. Cheers!
