This clip is regretably nearly a decade too late in recognising the real emergence of Northern Soul (NS). The term NS attributed to an article in B&S was based upon the writers visit to the Twisted Wheel in Manchester many years previous to Wigan. The programme appears to be driven by available film archive rather than historical fact that the NS scene in its emergence and continuance held no phobia or predjudice whatsoever - the scene was/remains in its music and style simply too big for that!

When I first became a skin I was full on into the reggae soul and maybe dabbled with Oi, but was not my bag really, after a few years, I tended to grow my hair out a bit, wore more stylish gear than my Denim jacket and harrington and mixed it up with the mods at clubs and northern soul event. Became a well known soul DJ too.

These days now I'm back to the boots and braces, that's because I'm proud to be a skinhead!

I got no idea where we got the idea of bags. I think it was a step further than the old skinners which I think should be in some style museum!! And why is it we dont wear cords anymore?? I've been in to Northern since 1975, I was a regular at Wigan casino, Manchester Ritz, Yate and elsewhere and indeed I still go to Northern soul events and though I agree with most of your comments The Northern soul scene was never about getting pissed and pulling chicks. I never heard anybody call them chicks that was a hippy term. Sorry. :)

Yes, Elms is a knob but he does hit on some truths here. I was brought up in Inner-city Brum in the late 60's and 70's and felt that impowerment taking place. It was bloody great for a while there in the 70's before people got pushed into 'ghettos' - call my glasses rose-colored, but I loved reggae, rocksteady, going to Blues parties... and punk and soul nights. Always looked pretty mod though to be honest.
