It's a shame that the whole Nathan Adler project wasn't finished. Outside was an introduction to a story, but is difficult to make sense of as none of the story takes place. It's 70 minutes of characters and surroundings being described. I like the album, but it would have been so much better if the sequels came out as he intended. He had big ideas, such as elaborating on it with a two-disc jam album named after a character (Leon) to represent him. He wanted it to be huge, but it wasn't to be.
whats all that footage from the bits that look lke there for a music video , and where he says 'hallo spaceboy' but theres no music video from this period with any of these in its confusing.
This has got to be one of the best Bowie interviews ever! He really goes into all the creative processes and even from previous works that he reflects on, that led him to creating this particular piece of work!!!
It is a great album. You have to get used to it a bit. Combination of catchy songs like "Oxford Town" or "Hallo Spaceboy" and more atmospheric, like "These Architect's Eyes." It's one of my favorite DB albums, and I have them all.
@CrocodileBurgers dude he might read this...oh my god would'nt you be shy even if he just left a comment you'd feel that heat rise up you, and hear his alluring interesting voice and.... ...oh hell your right
@tp4ever1950s LMAO, I wish he did read this.... David, you sexy beast, call me!
Though you're probably right, I'm not generally prone to swooning over men, nor have I ever fainted, but I think if he spoke to me in person I'm pretty sure I'd do both of those things... I might even squee like a twihard somewhere in there for good measure :-P
So yeah, all in all, I'd lose any modicum of decorum and sense of dignity still left in me....
i have to meet him before one of us dies!!! if anyone should be immortal it should be bowie... ill settle on a handshake, a short conversation or somehow a jam session of some kind...
This is the album l always come back to year after year. Every time l listen to it, l dig something different out, or empathise with a different character. IMHO this is, much like Amarok of Mike Oldfield, a crowning, outstanding achievement, made all the more poignant by its relative lack of recognition. One of my all-time favourite albums.
yes, it's supposed to be the character of Detective Professor Nathan Adler. The main character of the Outside album which is, among other things, sort of a murder/mystery concept. It was also the most published photo for the promotion of this album appearing as a T-shirt design as well as on the cover of "The Hearts Filthy Lesson" single (a British release that featured a remix by Trent Reznor among others)
Thank you for the reply but as it turns out I have put the wrong time on my comment, haha. Sorry. I actually meant 5.56, the character just before Nathan Adler.
Thanks a lot for posting. Outside is for me the masterpiece of Mr. Bowie. It is my favorite for years and i cant understand the critics of this album. Bowie is still genius.
The most underrated album of all time. Though this CD is too complex for masses, so wasn't a major commercial success, shame. Anyway Bowie is an absolute genious !
@Hanesu Bowie probably has the sequel written in terms of a short confusing story.... Maybe he is taking his time...Some book I bout gave Outside a WOOF rating...meaning bad.... I actually really like this album....Even Ramona A Stone
Its kind of funny when he talks about the charicters!!!! like George Harrison said "The BEATLES gave their nervous systems" & BOWIE is actually has been putting his sanity on the line lol!!!

Not that I'm complaining because I find it quite sexy; but why is he laying down in a bed while he talks?

His little facial hair is so so so cool.
No blonde man can pull it off quite like he did in the early 90's!
