@TiNaBLink - Rock N Roll history class!!!!! I sure wish they had that class when I was in high school back in the late '60's. I'll bet that's a fun class to be in.
@VinylNostalgia It is such a joy to be taking it. they just dont make music like they used to. I mean, Atlantic Records is still a pretty strong company, but the talent is just not the same.
@VinylNostalgia im taking it right now. i think i know more than my teacher. he did put on the ray charles version that i never heard before though. think i might like that one the best but aretha did her thing on it too!
@RandomDouche0421 I do not agree. Just because the song has an upbeat beat doesn't mean it is a happy song. Soul music has it's own way of conveying dark themes. This is a glorious version of this song. And I don't see how it takes away from the melancholy atmosphere at all. I totally feel the meaning here, regardless of what you say.
I must say I don't really like this cover- I mean, the original song of Elagnor Rigby was suppossed to be really sad and depressing, about two people who were meant for each other, but sadly never found each other; and as a result, died lonely. Aretha here seems to take away that melancholy atmosphere with her usual jazzy, soulish tune. Sorry Aretha, not this time. You are a great singer, but try not to change the songs you wish to cover.
@RandomDouche0421..Understand something about Aretha Franklin, she sings and arranges songs how she feels them. Just because you can only understand this song in one light does not mean that the song can not shine under a different light...
Aretha Franklin & Kim Weston both take "Eleanor Rigby" and make it their own in a riveting way...nothing like a peak form soulful Diva and Aretha & Kim are the greatest from the amazing "Great Musical Sixties" and today sadly nothing compares!
I don't think I have a favorite version. The Beatles is great. Ray Charles is great. Aretha is great. Kim Weston is great. Just don't fuck it up, that's all I ask.
@jordanngirl, heyy dumbass!!! She aint dead...let's not be a stupid bimbo, by putting the legends to rest before their time! I'm wishing you were Eleanor Rigby right about now!
Maybe I'm looking "too deep" into this, but I always imagined Aretha Franklin became a character in this story when she sung it. I imagined her as the gospel singer in the church, perhaps resided over Eleanor Rigby's grave as she was singing this
@TheQueenAretha everyone is entitled to their own crazy stupid and unprofessional opinions. The sad thing is the Beatles probably made more money off Aretha's version than their own. I'm sure their not complaining....OOOPS I forgot Michael Jackson has the rights to their music.....HAHA!
Only Aretha can take a pop song and sprinkle it with all that soul and have you wanting to shout in the isles even if you're not in church...What a historical gem, the Queen of Soul. Nobody does it like her...

wow she rapped a great song. its supposed to be sad and dark, but this is happy and upbeat. and what the fuck is up with her refering to herself as eleanor rigby? its a stupid cover
@ChrisEgnew oh i get it. so when you cover a song youre never supposed to change it or change the mood or try to make it differently. i think you'll love my cover of elenor rigby. i put in a beatles CD and hit play. it's EXACTLY like the original. you'd LOVE it.
@theZodiacDigital your supposed to put your own spin on it and make it yours, yes. but changing the entirety of the song with the exception of the lyrics? nah. im not saying this is a bad song, its just nowhere near the level of the beatles version
@ChrisEgnew i dont know, its fairly ridiculous to say covers shouldn't change this much. most good covers i can think of change most of the song and even the lyrics. it's a real good cover, probably not as good as the original but thats ok since its different enough that it doesnt matter.
@theZodiacDigital well, the way i see it, this shouldnt have even been a cover. it shouldve had original lyrics and been its own song, becuase it very well couldve been.
@ChrisEgnew way to dictate to aretha franklin what she should do with her songs decades after the fact. i mean if you think so, that's great, it really is, but just a tip: covers like these happen all the time. it's no aberration or anything. think of most led zeppelin covers, i.e. whole lotta love, you shook me. if you dont like it, fine, really, im not going to argue about your taste or anything. i'm just saying there's really nothing wrong or weird about her choice.
@theZodiacDigital and, a lot of folks dont even listen to an original before they make a cover, they just record it the way they would record any 'new' song, lyrics and chord sheets...
@ChrisEgnew Happy and upbeat? No, it's the soul! If you can't feel it, it's probably because you're ignorant. I actually prefer this over the Beatles' version.
I like and appreciate her take on the song, but it IS supposed to be a dark and sad song. Now, im not say making something your own is bad, she really did a great job on this, but it takes away from the point of the original one.
I strongly disliked this recording!
