The cliffhanger itself was relatively well-executed, considering that soaps were not known for their skill in pulling off action sequences (the ringing bells at the end were a nice touch - very haunting). The problem with this storyline was, clearly, the fact that so many characters survived. The plot would have been more credible if the show had used the opportunity to rid itself of more characters like Michael, the King, Claudia and Dominique that didn't have much left to do anyway.
This was a crock.. everybody all played dead? they werent all unconsicous.. Dex and one eyed willie fight a shot goes off and both are laying motionless?

@Forever Complaining I went back and read those comments from last year which so upset you. Someone was asserting that Joan and Linda were making the same salary (or that Joan was making more) based on things they apparently read from Joan (who is well known to make things up). Linda and John Forsythe both had clauses in their contracts which protected their being paid more than any other actor; it's a common thing for TV contracts.

As wonderful as this entire series is, there are definite disadvantages to posting episodes taped off of television. I distinctly remember, the first time I saw this, seeing a scene in which Claudia referred to herself as "What? The ex-Mrs. Steven Carrington" and Adam responding "As the future Mrs. ADAM Carrington!"--but Soapnet seems to have cut it.
Likewise, in the next episode, I remember that Claudia took a bullet in the arm, but that scene is gone as well.

yes, I too, thought the chuch bells rang right throughout the end credits,what a cliffhanger, sensational th the time, but stupid, really, as only 3 people died! Durgh! It was quite a shock seeing all this as a 10 year old and everybody talked about in school a few days later as here in the U.K. this was shown on a Saturday night.
Can you imagine how much of a shocker this was? I mean, here are all the characters laying there, anyone of them could be dead (we found out otherwise tho ;) and those church bells! This was an interesting concept concieved by former "Dallas" writer Camille Marchetta who wrote part of "Who shot JR" while on Dallas. The next set of writers seemed to have been challeneged as to what to do with this plot line and instead brought us Krystle's double "Rita". This season was an unhappy one behind the scenes for both cast and crew.

I think that they tried to copy the look from Princess Diana's wedding. The outfit that Michael is wearing is very similar to the one Charles wore & the flower girls are dressed in a similar style as well. The only thing that's different is the design of the dress that the bride is wearing-I think that the one Amanda wore is much better than the one Diana wore (no offense, I loved Diana's sense of style but not her wedding dress). It's so sad that both weddings didn't end up being happy.

Joan said in an interview that the producers told the entire cast to lay still as if they were dead - to scare them as their contracts came up for renewal as the salary demands had got so high. Joan was the only member of the cast who was certain of her importance and proceeded with tough salary negotiations, hence why she was missing from the next episode. Spelling capitulated to her and she got a $30,000 per episode pay rise. Way to go Joan!!

Joan basically pulled a no show stating that she wanted a raise otherwise the mini series she was filming would keep her in France and she'd be a no show for an undetermined # of episodes. And Linda and Joan did NOT have a clause which said they had to make the same salary... Forsythe and Evans, as the two original leads, both had clauses which said no actor could be paid more than they (which included Joan). Joan only became TV's highest paid actress once Evans left.

@bworiginal Actually, Forsythe and Evans both had a clause in their contracts that no actor (without a "special guest star" title) could be paid more than them... it's a common, self-protection thing.
Joan actually became TV's highest paid actress ONLY after Linda left early in Season 9.
I think saying its routine to re-negoitate is taking a liberty. But in Joan's case I too think it was warranted. A.S. and ABC were raking in millions, even E.D. Vincent was making millions & his Exec. Prod. title was just that, he had almost nothing to do w/the show..Esther Shapiro comments on this on her Youtube interview. I think she had a right definetly, there were others who thought differently & blamed her actions for the show panicking on her no-show in '85 & jumping the shark in 1985.
Chrispatyna---------Did you know that Krystle used to play "Audrey Barkley", Barabara Staynwicks daughter in the tv western series called (( Big Valley )). google that and see how beautiful she was. Then look up early photo of Lynn Anderson, the country singer. They could have been sisters back then.
I remember watching this the first time, and laughing until I thought I'd have a heart attack. Comedy isn;t as funny the second time round, but it still made me chuckle. They should have been saved by their shoulder pads and hair laquer!
Many htings stand out about this shoot. John/Catherine had to walk down the isle many times because the room was so small cameras had to shoot from the back first. Then all the cameras had to move to the front of the room to shoot again. This was a 14 hour day alone. The house is Greystone Manor in Beverly Hills. The house is closed off but the gardens are open and this room where the wedding was shot can be viewed. Sometimes it is opened up and you can walk in.
When you visit the house there are French doors where the producers put windows in for dramatic effect. One side of the room has glass doors that open onto a lawn and the other "windows" face a central courtyard...the "glass" was production cane. I always thought it would have been better had the terrorists wore black face masks, not only for effect but a logical protection against the "glass" they were going through.
Yeah, it was poorly done in the shooting section. They could've made it (as the season ending) more suspense filled. The part at the end with them just stuck on the ground was silly but I expect that they did it that way in order to leave it up in the open. I guess it could be a way (if anyone was wanting more money than they wanted to give the performer) they could write off specific cast members.
The scene was incredibly well done and could not have been a better PR machine for everyone involved. The mistake made was a change in writing/production staff. Camille Marchetta, who wrote this scene left the show. And the fact they dragged this out for so long this season, the massacre should have been the end of the storyline, send everyone home, show them getting over what happened. Joan's no show wasn't the issue, the writing staff skimped on the details for the fans. A total disappointment
The biggest mistake they made was showing everyone getting shot. If they had focussed the cameras on the gunmen opening fire on the chapel without specifically showing who got hit and then had the pan out, it would have been just as dramatic and easier to swallow. Adam and Michael took bullets, Krystle and Alexis laid there lifeless, Dex spooned with Yuri, and then a close up on each character taking a nap? It was too detailed for what the resolution was. They could have been more abstract.
I absolutely agree with your observation. It was the specificity of the shots (double meaning intended!), when good storytelling suggests a carefully planned and blocked general approach would've been just as effective an end to the season. A series of fast cuts of guests' faces and bodies interspersed with commandos shooting and loyal guards defending would've sufficed.
agree with all but adam, he should have been hurt. I'd put dominique and Dex on there too. The writers only killing off 3 supporting characters was kind of weak imo.
I never saw that. For sheer insanity this did it for me. The joke is, the church was so small and crowded, the terrorists could have fired four rounds and just let the bullets ricochet around to have the same effect!

Aaron Spelling shows gave us drama and they werent ashamed to go over the top! no matter how "ridiculous" this or Kimberly's bombing MP were...lets face it, they wouldnt still be talked about over 20 years (for Dynasty) and nearly 15 years later (For Melrose) if they hadnt struck the pop culture consciousness of the time lol! sometimes "good tv" isnt plausible and Aaron Spelling knew that.
I disagree about Dominique. She had some storylines in the next season and even during the first half of season 07 (she also went back and forth from DYNASTY to 'The Colbys' and affected their storyline(s), too).
I am glad that Dominique lived and her character just happily left Denver at the end of Season 07.

I think they also should have gotten rid of Claudia (since she was going to die at the end of season 6 anyway) And dare I say it, if they knew that PSM wasn't going to come back as Fallon, they should have let Fallon stay dead, gotten rid of Jeff, not bothered with the Colbys and brought in Sable much sooner. Now can you imagine Sable & Caress teaming up together to get Alexis with Ben in the shadows? Now THAT would have made a great season 6 & 7!
I definitely think Alexis' shoulder pads saved her... there maybe a blood stain there, but mark my words it was the Nolan Miller shoulder pads that deflected the bullets! ;)
The cliffhanger itself was relatively well-executed, considering that soaps were not known for their skill in pulling off action sequences (the ringing bells at the end were a nice touch - very haunting). The problem with this storyline was, clearly, the fact that so many characters survived. The plot would have been more credible if the show had used the opportunity to rid itself of more characters like Michael, the King, Claudia and Dominique that didn't have much left to do anyway.

Someone was asserting that Joan and Linda were making the same salary (or that Joan was making more) based on things they apparently read from Joan (who is well known to make things up). Linda and John Forsythe both had clauses in their contracts which protected their being paid more than any other actor; it's a common thing for TV contracts.

@scorpio888 correct John and linda evans were very close in real life and had it written in thier contract that no other actor in the show could be paid more money than either of them and each of them had a faithful clause in their contracts state that the writers could never have either sleep with someone else on the show....this worked because both were main characters on the show.... this is verfied in a tv interview with them somewhere on utube.

As wonderful as this entire series is, there are definite disadvantages to posting episodes taped off of television. I distinctly remember, the first time I saw this, seeing a scene in which Claudia referred to herself as "What? The ex-Mrs. Steven Carrington" and Adam responding "As the future Mrs. ADAM Carrington!"--but Soapnet seems to have cut it.
Likewise, in the next episode, I remember that Claudia took a bullet in the arm, but that scene is gone as well.

After some hunting I found the house this was filmed at..this is the Harold Lloyd Estate in Beverly Hills, California. Google and flickr have images of the house..the room used for the wedding was actually the original living room for the house.

This was an interesting concept concieved by former "Dallas" writer Camille Marchetta who wrote part of "Who shot JR" while on Dallas. The next set of writers seemed to have been challeneged as to what to do with this plot line and instead brought us Krystle's double "Rita". This season was an unhappy one behind the scenes for both cast and crew.
With Homeric&Scorpio..Scorpio needs to chill. You sound abit too intense to be believable.

I think that they tried to copy the look from Princess Diana's wedding. The outfit that Michael is wearing is very similar to the one Charles wore & the flower girls are dressed in a similar style as well. The only thing that's different is the design of the dress that the bride is wearing-I think that the one Amanda wore is much better than the one Diana wore (no offense, I loved Diana's sense of style but not her wedding dress). It's so sad that both weddings didn't end up being happy.

This was the best Dynasty scene ever!! Joan said in an interview that the producers told the entire cast to lay still as if they were dead - to scare them as their contracts came up for renewal as the salary demands had got so high. Joan was the only member of the cast who was certain of her importance and proceeded with tough salary negotiations, hence why she was missing from the next episode. Spelling capitulated to her and she got a $30,000 per episode pay rise. Way to go Joan!!

Actually Joan was in the middle of her contract in 1985. Joan basically pulled a no show stating that she wanted a raise otherwise the mini series she was filming would keep her in France and she'd be a no show for an undetermined # of episodes. Some people praise her,some people thought it was totally unprofessional as she was in a contract that she herself signed & knew the terms of.This was good news for Linda who was also given a raise as neither lady could contractually outmake the other

It's routine to renegotiate mid-contract, especially when you've become the key character in the Number One show in the world. And Joan was at the end of the fourth year of a five year contrac, and this hadn't happened yet... I don't always defend Joan, but she was right to walk.
Also, it was Linda (and Forsythe) who had clauses that no actor could be paid more than them. But Joan and Linda did NOT have some kind of matching clause insisting they be paid the same.

Joan was not in a five year contract..her first yr option was picked up for3 yrs. A TV production or network almost never signs talent onto a str8 5 yr run. Joan's debut was very much indoubt by ABC then and a 5 yr commitment was not in the offering for Joan in 1981, she was unproven at the time. John was the the highlest paid in the series run..Joan and Linda each made the same salary..with almost identical clauses in each of their performance contracts.

The reason Stephanie Beacham could be forced back in 1988 by David Paulsen was because she was contracted for 5 years to Aaron Spelling from 1985 to 1990.
And Linda and Joan did NOT have a clause which said they had to make the same salary... Forsythe and Evans, as the two original leads, both had clauses which said no actor could be paid more than they (which included Joan). Joan only became TV's highest paid actress once Evans left.

However, in reference to Stephanie Beacham I suggest you look up David Paulsen's interview here on Youtube. He goes into detail as to how Stephanie's return came about..which was inpart due to the money saved by Linda's departure and Joan's re-occuring status in the final season. Again his words..not mine. He had a strict mandate that he not go over the per peisode budget...which for 1989 was huge. Stephanie being contractually bound is an interesting claim, something I can look into.

Joan actually became TV's highest paid actress ONLY after Linda left early in Season 9.

I think saying its routine to re-negoitate is taking a liberty. But in Joan's case I too think it was warranted. A.S. and ABC were raking in millions, even E.D. Vincent was making millions & his Exec. Prod. title was just that, he had almost nothing to do w/the show..Esther Shapiro comments on this on her Youtube interview. I think she had a right definetly, there were others who thought differently & blamed her actions for the show panicking on her no-show in '85 & jumping the shark in 1985.

Many htings stand out about this shoot. John/Catherine had to walk down the isle many times because the room was so small cameras had to shoot from the back first. Then all the cameras had to move to the front of the room to shoot again. This was a 14 hour day alone. The house is Greystone Manor in Beverly Hills. The house is closed off but the gardens are open and this room where the wedding was shot can be viewed. Sometimes it is opened up and you can walk in.

When you visit the house there are French doors where the producers put windows in for dramatic effect. One side of the room has glass doors that open onto a lawn and the other "windows" face a central courtyard...the "glass" was production cane. I always thought it would have been better had the terrorists wore black face masks, not only for effect but a logical protection against the "glass" they were going through.

Yeah, it was poorly done in the shooting section. They could've made it (as the season ending) more suspense filled. The part at the end with them just stuck on the ground was silly but I expect that they did it that way in order to leave it up in the open. I guess it could be a way (if anyone was wanting more money than they wanted to give the performer) they could write off specific cast members.

The scene was incredibly well done and could not have been a better PR machine for everyone involved. The mistake made was a change in writing/production staff. Camille Marchetta, who wrote this scene left the show. And the fact they dragged this out for so long this season, the massacre should have been the end of the storyline, send everyone home, show them getting over what happened. Joan's no show wasn't the issue, the writing staff skimped on the details for the fans. A total disappointment

The biggest mistake they made was showing everyone getting shot. If they had focussed the cameras on the gunmen opening fire on the chapel without specifically showing who got hit and then had the pan out, it would have been just as dramatic and easier to swallow. Adam and Michael took bullets, Krystle and Alexis laid there lifeless, Dex spooned with Yuri, and then a close up on each character taking a nap? It was too detailed for what the resolution was. They could have been more abstract.

I absolutely agree with your observation. It was the specificity of the shots (double meaning intended!), when good storytelling suggests a carefully planned and blocked general approach would've been just as effective an end to the season. A series of fast cuts of guests' faces and bodies interspersed with commandos shooting and loyal guards defending would've sufficed.

I disagree about Dominique. She had some storylines in the next season and even during the first half of season 07 (she also went back and forth from DYNASTY to 'The Colbys' and affected their storyline(s), too).
I am glad that Dominique lived and her character just happily left Denver at the end of Season 07.

I think they also should have gotten rid of Claudia (since she was going to die at the end of season 6 anyway) And dare I say it, if they knew that PSM wasn't going to come back as Fallon, they should have let Fallon stay dead, gotten rid of Jeff, not bothered with the Colbys and brought in Sable much sooner. Now can you imagine Sable & Caress teaming up together to get Alexis with Ben in the shadows? Now THAT would have made a great season 6 & 7!
