  • i love it that Breams has such a pure passion and love for the music is playing. when i listen to this the music touches something in side me. I'm 15, and to me bach is the greatest music around...

  • Continued: basically, Bach is several different chords, played at the same time. But a good guitarist can, from these chords, make two different melodies stand out. So there are different melodies you hear, not few chords. Now THIS is very the difficult thing is. To make every melody clear and keep them together. If there is only some chords with a melody - that is easy peasy. When you have many melodies and make them clear and loud - difficult.

  • The difficult thing with playing Bach is not technical quick stuff, like difficult legatos or whatever. The difficult thing, is to keep all different melodies flowing independently. For instance, to really hear the base melody, keep it together and flowing gently. It should be like several independent guitarists playing each melody, together. This is very difficult, and you need extremely good technique to do this. Otherwise, it will just be several different chords played together, no melodies.

  • does anyone know what the HECK he is playing in the first few measure???? its not even close to the sheet.. i love it but its def different then what's written.. is he improvising that?? or maybe he started it with a later section? beautiful.. but confusing

  • @strazza555 Look up "Violin Sonata Songsterr", pick the one on songsterr and you'll see its pretty much the same. Whatever you have is a special interpretation...

  • @strazza555 Seems pretty close to the versions I have?

  • Hello, im going to be auditioning for a major in classical guitar very soon. and i was wondering if this piece fits this description..

***one or two movements from a suite by Bach***

if anyone could help me from their precious time it would be a work of space and time for me.. please help!

  • @BMSiren what they are probably looking for is two movements from the bach lute suites. this is not originally from a lute suite.

  • @CrummyNails haha thank you very much. i wont forget ur help!

  • never noticed b4 with bream but he has really good independance between finger 2 and 3 of the fret hand

  • There is a huge difference between being able to pick the notes and play well. If you can pull this off after 4 years of playing you are a Virtuoso. This was not written to easily flow with the layout of a guitar the fingering is extreme and the dexterity requiered is more like many years of playing - again simply making through something (that is an accomplishment on this one) and actually playing well are 2 different animals

  • Sorry for my ignorance.... but who is the guitar player?

  • R&B Club Mix Advert before the vid? Come on, this is quality. don't spoil it.

  • He isn't playing the transcription of the fugue from the 1st violin sonata bwv1001

he is playing the fugue bwv1000, which is a transcription bach made from the from the 1st violin sonata bwv1001 from which he extracted this fugue bwv1000, fugue from which julian is playing a transcription in A minor, one step higher than the fugue from which he transcripted the fugue he is playing, the former being itself a transcription from the fugue bwv1001 from which Bach extracted the fugue bwv1001.

  • 4 years huh... Starting today 11/29/11... Go!

  • @SteveStarcher

I hardly doubt that this would take anyone four years to learn, unless that person only practiced this piece for a few minutes every day.

  • superbe !

  • This piece moves me to tears every time... Violin or guitar... I could toss a coin. Superb!

  • Merveilleuse interprétation

    félicitations

    André

  • PAGANINI DAID HE WAS THE MASTER OF THE VIOLIN AND THAT THE GUITAR WAS HIS MASTER. BRAVO JULIAN!!

  • I WAS FIFTEEN YEARS OLD WHEN I FIRST HEARD BREAM. 17 YEARS LATER HE STILL MOVES ME.

  • Is this BWV 1001 or BWV 1000? I think 1001 ia slightly different.

  • @muurtalo This is the BWV 1000, written for the lute, and not,as stated by MonteverdiXVI, the BWV 1001, which was written for the violin. They have similar elements but are different works.

  • @simonshusse This seems slightly different from the one recorded by Chris Parkening.

  • does anyone happen to know what arrangement this is?

  • SENSATIONAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This wonderful man never got the credit he deserved.

  • This man is the best guitar player I've ever heard.

  • Wonderful! I am in heaven when I hear your incredible technique and ambience of your beautiful guitar playing. Thank you so much!

  • where is the rest strokes??

  • i really don't see the point of a lot of bach's music. it's just the same thing over and over again a million times with slight variations

  • @guitarmachine13 That's what gives Bach's music the penultimate level of unity of purpose & design. It's not just a random process, but every moment leads from the moment before to the moment after.

  • genial. el mas grande

  • bach 's music is very hayd but he plays very cool!

  • perfect! also extremely hard

    Wel done!

  • This piece is hunting me while I'm awake... It is my true goal to master it eventually.

  • Happy birthday, Julian!

  • Julian Bream show us how to use tonal changes in complete harmony with the composition, J.S. Bach would be so proud to listen to this piece in Bream's magical hands,

  • Awesome...wow...mmm...i think he nailed it!!

  • I agree with every positive thing! knighthoods, beauty, touch, everything!! But 4 years to play this properly??? I humbly suggest that i like this enough to dedicate myself to it.....................night and day, live it breathe it..............2 years tops :}

  • @Sevlenski i think he means four years from beginning to play guitar properly.

  • Awesome! TY Monte for posting this treasure.

  • We have Sir Cliff Richards, Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney... Let's hear it for Sir Julian Bream! If anyone deserves to be honoured for his sheer talent and contribution to music, its him – He's the greatest!

  • FUCK

  • @LeDoctoer Chameleons change their colour for mating purposes not to fit in their environment but for attraction purposes.

  • @mscof789 its a metaphor, and you knew exactly what he meant.

  • Wow! Imagine knowing the piece so well that it flows from you and you don't crack from the pressure of having to nail each segment! Bravo!

  • Comment removed

  • I play the guitar too - but I think this man has forgot more that I´ve ever known. Great!great! great!!!!!

  • super!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ¡Siempre Julian! ¡Siempre fascinante!

  • Bravo! Just the way it should be, no more emphasis or speed than elegant playing needs.

  • Questa è la fuga bwv 1000 in la minore. Una trascrizione mal riuscita, non fatta da Bach. E' molto meglio suonare quella in sol minore, ossia la BWV 1001.

  • Fantastico Julian!!!!!

  • fantástico muy único :D

  • QUE PAPi de la guitarra csm

  • Haha, I hate breaking my strings and having to wait to get new ones: especially when I find beautiful pieces to learn like this one. Well done Julian...

  • Shut Up, it's Bream

  • Amazing! I like it so much :) Thanks for posting this video!

  • Mike Schank

  • he sooths my soul with his sound... amazing man amazing sound

  • Perfect!!!

  • Julian Bream has certainly a great "understanding" and mastery of this type of music.

Just a matter of precision: This is not the violin sonata fugue, but its "twin" (not identical) from the Lautenmusik collection: there are here and there differences, and a few more bars to it.

  • The 34 people who don't like this, don't understand the amazing understanding Julian Bream put into playing this piece of music

  • @yumeybaconcutout Although you sound like your progressing quickly, I really wouldn't suggest playing any of the more difficult Bach until you have a really, really solid technique. More than anything I, I first attempted the 4th Lute Suite at your age, but had been playing for 5 years.... Remember that playing easy, but technical music first is far more beneficial than jumping in at the deep end! Chances are you not another Ana Vidovic ;)

  • is this clip from a collectino of performances by the master Julian Bream? and if so, can you tell us the title of it so that we too may purchase it? thanks you in advance.

  • Not bad for a white boy

  • @johnmorgan27 you fucking racist

  • @Wayavas1337 Er, mate, you need to turn on your irony detector. And don't use such bad fucking language :) Take care, and keep up the good work.

  • how difficult is it to learn the lute suites? i'm 13 and have been playing for a year; but i feel that im progressing fairly quick :D im really looking forward to learning them (whether next year or in 10 years) since bach is the reason i've picked up the guitar. my teacher hasnt suggested learning them yet, should i just wait until then? i also try to get in 2 hours a day, currently im playing stuff like bwv 999, prelude from cello suite 1, and many etudes by carcassi.

  • @yumeybaconcutout wellllll, this piece is, as you can likely tell is hard on the violin, and the guitar. In order to gain the technique necessary to tackle this piece, id say it would take about 4 years of serious focus and practice on guitar, but its up to you and your teacher ultimately.

  • @donesixfour ------------ This is a virtuoso piece on the guitar , and not in any way simple on the violin , but I'd have to say this particular Bach masterpiece is slightly harder to play on 6 strings vs 4 , just mho . This is not an easy solo . 4 years to play well for either ( violin or guitar ) would be a true accomplishment for anyone .

  • @FazeDrifter Agreed. 4 years of guitar probably isn't enough to try to play this.

  • @Incisionator that depends on how dedicated you are, i started 3 years ago with a friend, and he can play literally all that he wants, but he did nothing else than practicing

  • @industrialm There's playing and there's playing, obviously.

  • @FazeDrifter

4 years from starting with the song, or instrument?

i'd say more, one would need to be playing the instrument at least 6?

  • @Emunozcjnick 4 years on piece.. easily

  • @Emunozcjnick To play it this well you need at least 35 years as Bream has in this video

  • @FazeDrifter well I did it in about two and a half! lol The vid's on my channel...should you be at all interested :P haha

  • @yumeybaconcutout .it won't take you 10 years ;)especially since you have a teacher...it's a fun piece to play(one of my students is 12 and is learning it. Based on your time and ability(2-4 weeks- minimum 6 hours study time per week to memorize.. have a good ear but no teacher?.. it should take you less time(sheet music + tabs+all the YT clips available..not that hard but it's a gorgeous piece..just don't "mystify" it and you'll be o.k.(just chords, double stops and licks)played masterfully ;)

  • @newislandguitar lol, i already learned it. but thanks, good advice :)

  • The best musician and the best guitar.

  • byootiful

  • is a god

  • Beautiful! I think playing these classical songs on guitar makes them more relatable to contemporary generations and allows us to really appreciate Bach's mastery

  • 34 people have been beaten senseless with acoustic guitars. Only explanation I can come up with.

  • @Soulfree2008

I use tabs for some non-classical pieces I play, such as a lot of movie music, but I don't have tabs for this.

  • @berkshireee

I'm guessing this isn't in standard tuning?

  • @Soulfree2008

No prob. I'm doing this piece for my guitar ARCT exam =D

  • @Soulfree2008

The 1001 fugue is the violin sonata. This fugue is actually based on the 1000 lute fugue (which was actually a transcription based on the 1001 fugue). They are similar, but I can tell that this is the 1000 from the beginning (the 1001 has a trill near the beginning which you can hear if you search for it).

  • 34 dislikes for what reason?.......... I don't get it

  • Thank you very very much Julian Bream.

    You are Great !

  • *glimpse

  • This is BWV 1000 not 1001, isn't it?

  • I love the sound of the guitar because every single stroke reveals the 'aura', or 'force' (as coined in the Star Wars series) of the player.

  • Under appreciated in my opinion . I love Julian Bream !

  • @FazeDrifter Listen I love him as well. I love him and John Williams and Paco de Lucia. I feel so overwhelemed and almost crazy when I see any of them playing. I wish I could meet them all three at once, I would get a heart attack

  • my favorite bach music piece

  • 32 don't like????????? O.O" deaf!!!!!!!!!!!

  • speechless

  • He looks like a used car salesman in that horrible suit, but goddamn, that guy can play.

  • this is what wistful love sounds like.

  • O melhor do mundo atualmente, mas acho que ele não se apresenta mais, então John Williams é o de maior destaque atualmente!

  • It sounds like 100 guitars.

    (It's great)

  • I love this piece. Sounds phenomenal on guitar.

  • ok for all who say that this guy's talent came from god, what about the talented guitarists that don't believe in god or sing about how religion or god is some lame crap...doest the theory apply to those people as well?imo this guy has busted his ass to play like that, i played for 3 years electric guitar, i have created some riff's,solo's in a neclassical style which i;m proud of but i don;t believe in god i believe in hard work for something that i love.

  • @Sadornicus blah blah blah man how droll can you get talking like that? If someone wants to post what they believe, why can't ya just shut up already? Always a sour note about something

  • @Vstrat0 so i posted my own opinion, what;s your problem? blah blah blah= kid;s way to have a good argument, you should shut up....

  • God give 2 hands to all, but who decide what to do is you with your dedication and faith in yourself...God bless? yes! but noth come for free, if u dont work hard, noth happens...

  • is there any score for this version?

  • Juliam Bream does have the real touch on his guitar; full control - fabulous!

    ed

    w w w eddy nu

  • Some guitarists overwhelm you with power and dynamics but lack subtlety. Some play with great tone and feeling but can't quite handle the technically challenging parts. Some, like Segovia, have a very characteristic style that colors everything they play.

Julian has managed to cover all of those areas in a way that is deceptively unobtrusive. His playing has a chameleon like quality that shapes itself to the piece like no other. You really don't hear him, just the gorgeous music.

  • @LeDoctoer i was trying to explain to myself why i liked this exact rendering of the piece so much, but i just couldn't put my finger on it. your words describe my feelings precisely.

  • @yumeybaconcutout Great minds think alike :)

  • @LeDoctoer you smoke too much

  • He looks like Bill O´Reilly! Good music!

  • @Chopofiev The only way you can tell it isn't Bill O'Reilly is you can't play guitar that well on Valuum.

  • @Chopofiev yeah he looks like Bill O'reilly with a brain, that is, nothing like the real Bill O'Reilly.

  • ah! lovely...my favorite piece to play! good job.

  • wow, he did a mistake

    after all, we are humans...

    search at 1:27

  • i wish i could play like anyone : ]

  • Fully enjoy means knowing yourself, being in the moment by way of your senses: subdue seeing when listening and so forth, and know that you alone--only you can change your self, your mind, your mood, your view, your feeling, your senses--infinitely easier than you can change anyone or anything else or the inverse of that ... and we are free to express so long as it is ethical: hurts no one, such as taking from their experience

  • Back then, this was called Shredding.

  • wordless, speechless....music of magnificence. Please, don't talk here, dont discuss anything here...just simply listen and dissolve yourself in this sounds. thats all you need.

  • magnificent

  • @LordxRequiem The shallow theology of an atheist in the Dawkins mold. I don't believe in God myself, but surely the beauty of art and music has to be one of religion's strongest arguments. Bach is divine, in the truest sense of the word.

  • @WanderingWarg No Bach is simply an example of what 4 billion years of evolution & thus nature can achieve. Just don't underestimate nature !

  • @WanderingWarg I think the popularity of Puddle of Mudd proves that god does not exist.

  • what kind of strings does he use? nylon? gut?

  • Well we give Jimi Hendrix the title of the greatest guitarist of all time... is it really true? We elevate a select few giants we believe to pave the way and set an example and something to strive after or one day surpass. This is human nature... it's not just in music, but politics and social structures of all kinds. We collectively create this as rungs on a ladder towards progress/evolution. But besides all of that not many have had the illustrious career Bream had.

  • @Aurelius27x He earned his place among the giants. The fact that there are just as many great players today has nothing to do with his artistry. We revere him and respect as a great teacher.

  • @Aurelius27x The idea of a greatest needs to have attached to it a list of criteria that define greatest; otherwise, greatest is meaningless, even in the ear of the beholder. The art of contest has a criteria and a philosophy of principles that supports the criteria; but, why bother; just expand your senses & enjoy whatever loves you at any level of love. When we rise just a bit above contest, conflict, competitiveness, then we all can be creators, creative as audience, too. How? Fully enjoy.

  • @davidfaubion Well said.

  • @Aurelius27x Hendrix is the most inventive electric guitarist I've ever heard and probably the most inventive guitarist full stop. Certainly no other guitarist has moved and impressed me as much. This is a completely different style of music and of course it's all a matter of personal taste. I love a huge amount of music by Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Wagner, Chopin, Sibelius, etc, etc, but it was Jimi that influenced my guitar playing.

  • Not being funny here but is Bream is a really superb player, but is he really that special or did he just get the limited market for classical guitar all sown up in the early days ?

Surely there are dozens of players as good who also don't only play the dots like Bream, but also compose & that we'll never hear of because of the limited market for this & the fact that people will only part with money to buy music from an established name.

    Or am I wrong ?

  • @pobinr Well this is youtube...anyone can post a video of themselves playing. If you think you can find players as good as Bream whom no one knows about, go ahead!

  • Mike Schank plays this song all the time!

  • I'll tell you what though. I thank God every single day for giving me arms and hands so I'm ABLE to play the Piano and Trombone and so that I'm ABLE to compose music. But I'm pretty sure God wouldn't be a happy bunny if I were to ever neglect my love for music and not work my ass off. :) Without God I would have no talent, but God does not tell me what to do. :)

  • Oh My God. Get to grips people. Appreciate the music and leave behind your silly arguments for another video that's related to the topic! How can you sit there and type irrelevant words after watching this masterpiece; which i can only describe as beautifully expressed. I know I'm going to contradict myself here by getting involved, but Jesus Christ! Do you think God sat there and told him what to do? God gave him the ability to work his ass off. Now move on people.

And have a nice day. :)

  • C'est du bric-a-brac que fait Bream avec Bach

  • @vosgien Ah - so people are wrong to like it and to like Julian Bream - how then should it be done? Votre commentaire, voilà ce que j'appelle du bric-à-brac, cher ami!

  • This is a beautiful glimse into a long gone world and sadly high art is as lost on the masses now as it probably was back then.

  • @mKreifeldt And to think that this brilliance was buried for almost a 100 years after his death.

  • @mKreifeldt well, at least WE enjoy it, 598,905 views aint bad :)

  • @mKreifeldt you sound like a pretentious douche...

  • @bobbycamp101 ^This

  • @mKreifeldt -------Largely , but not en total .

  • he plays it in Aminor, Barrueco in G min, like the original. This is fugue BWV 1000.

  • Great interpretation! But i honestly prefer Manuel Barrueco's, it's more than music..., anyway, AMAZING!

  • Bach is metal

  • Isn't it BWV 1000?

  • @winteersun it is 1000.

  • What a profoundly profoundly beautiful mind Bach had! Can you imagine where we would be musically without Bach's pivotal influence on the whole of western music? I'll tell you where .... the ****ing Dark Ages still! J.S.Bach, THE greatest achievement in the history of music !!!!!

  • That was a good workout!!

  • julian Bream-J.S.Bach-Violin Sonata !!!

  • this is quite essential my favourite version to play on guitar, i picked this for an audition and it kicked ass

  • Bream is Britains best ever guitarist FACT

  • haunting

  • Don't you just love the guitar face?! Fabulous! Music to make life worth living! (He looks remarkably like Fred West though!) :-/

  • @ap06476...You claimed and I quote ''You cant stand listening to those guys (Loomis Becker etc) for more than a couple of minutes ''unquote..Im saying Who Cant ?You ? bah...look at the numbers ..they are not without a legion of ''guitar playing'' fans because of they're prowess/ ability on guitar not for the pop / commercial appeal..unlike Bieber fans...

  • Ez csodálatosan szép volt.Igazi művészi teljesítmény.

  • Ez elképesztően szép volt!!!

  • @ap06476...Who cant stand listening (to Loomis etc )?..I see he have as many views on youtube as Bream despite being around a very short time in comparison. and loads of praise regarding his skill in the comments section..give me a break ..yours is a weak argument ..you fail cocksmoker

  • @nneevveerrmmoorree Don't be ridiculous. You want to compare artists based on their stats on youtube? You could just as well compare them to Justin Bieber and arrive at a conclusion that clearly Justin is superior in all respects due to the amount of "clicks" he gets on yt. And you are calling my argument a weak one? Get real. I never said Loomis and the like don't have the skills. They are simply entirely different species. I don't see any point in this comparison.

  • Comment removed

  • Now I love classical guitar and all the Breams running around...but they dont compare to all the Jason Beckers...why you ask?..well they dont ''COMPOSE'' for starters..they are like cover artists..performers only..and if you think the ''Breams accuracy dexterity are second to none..just listen to say' ''Guitars Still Suck''by Bumblefoot or Mile of Machines '' by Jeff Loomis..whether you like the song is 'subjective' but skill is very measurable

  • @nneevveerrmmoorree Classical pieces like this are composed in a way that's "open" in terms of interpretation, meaning you can play them with any feel you want, slowing down or building up intensity how you feel is right. They say that Bream is very good at it. This is also a hard piece to play, considering the classical guitar technique. Don't compare him to the likes of Jeff Loomis. People praise Bream's technique and feel, not his composition skills. And Loomis's solo record is pretty bland.
