To be fair, Thatcher stole the statements she just uttered from a well-known Catholic prayer first uttered by Saint Francis of Assisi. Thatchie just mixed up the terms.
Pelosi is Catholic, and what she uttered refers back to the actual Prayer of St. Francis, thatchie just wants to look good.
It's very well known that the prayer was first coined by St. Francis of Assisi, something that MT cited before making the statements (look at a full length video).
And Catholic or Protestant is a bit of a red herring, really, as Pelosi and MT are both Christians.
And notice how MT mentioned only the "let me" statements, while Pelosi said the prayer from the beginning, starting with the word Lord; this is because religion is much more relevant in the US, whereas Britain is a very secular society.
Nancy Pelosi is a strong woman and I sort of like her, but she is no comparison to Margaret Thatcher; and I have a strong feeling she used the same quote from St. Francis of Assissi in order to create a sort of association with MT. In her image that is.
@darioso5 A little over 600 Argentines died in the Falklands war. Also, she didn't start the war and a British victory did result in the islands being liberated from military occupation.
I am hardly Thatcher's biggest fan, but on the Falklands, you can't really criticise her.
@Medeasbiggestfan So are the islands now ruled by Britain? Or Argentina? Or neither? I know the majority of the population are neither British or Spanish. Do they have a chance of building an independent country?
Also, what do you mean by "liberated" in this context? Did the locals hate Argentina more than Britain?
The islanders are self-governing, but they're dependent on the UK. This means they have their own government, legislature and constitution, but they are all British citizens and the UK speaks for them on foreign policy.
Under their constitution, they have a right to independence if a majority of the islanders vote for it. But for now, most of the islanders want to remain British.
The islanders refer to the British retaking of the islands in 1982 as their 'liberation'.

Look upon Margaret Thatcher and see a politician of principles. Principles she was never shy about advertising and principles she held to the end of her political career - long after they had gone out of date.
Well done, thou good and faithful servant.
Whether you agreed with her principles or not, and many did not, you knew what you were getting when you voted Thatcher. I only wish more politicians had principles - perhaps we would have a real choice, again.
I think these are the moments in one's lifetime that one encounters as profoundly embarassing... How will that women, Pelosi recollect this speech later in her life?
"Let there be discord",hang on I just want to puke into the bucket!!! She goes on to be one of the most disliked Prime Minister this country ever had the misfortune to have.

Oh God what a mess she is a total joke and can't even spell "Speaker of the House" she can't even open a door without help she's dumb and needs to be defeated in her next election out in CA we need a Speaker who is competent and who now only understands the issues at hand but knows 100% how to work towards getting them fixed Nancy "Parkinson's" Pelosi can't even wip her ass without help!
Comparing Pelosi to Thatcher is like comparing water to oil. There is no comparison. Thatcher had substance that made a real different not only in her country but the world. Pelosi has nothing more than windy rhetoric. It was actually the hatred of Bush that elevated her to speaker of the house. Ironic considering her speech.
she was a great PM and a first class politition but she wasn't always a 'lovely human being' she could be vindictive and she was often a bully, nice people don't make it to the top in politics very often.
Amazing how comments like this (the mixmatosis one) tell you much more about the people who make them than the people they are commenting on lol! So full of (probably) ill-informed hate they can't even construct a logical argument. Let me have a go: hate + illogicality = probably wrong.
I have complete contempt for Thatcher, that is true. Her deregulation of the British financial system (and subsequent slashing of public funding) is one of the main reasons why we in this mess (current financial meltdown) in the first place. Neo Labour have carried on this free market torch, much to the detriment of the country and normal taxpayers like myself. So yeah, I'm angry.
OK, let me get this right: are you saying that the country was in fine shape prior to Thatcher? I understood it to be bankrupt and the government had to take a loan out form the IMF to keep functioning, and deregulation was needed to get the country off it's knees. The reason we are in the current mess is indeed because of too slack regulation... put in place by this fine 'Socialist' government. Labour always get's us into holes and others have to dig us back out of it!
I wasn't really comparing them. I just thought it was interesting that both Margaret Thatcher and Nancy Pelosi on become the first female incumbents of their respective offices chose to quote St. Francis.
I don't think so. Margaret Thatcher has been out of power for 18 years, the Provisional IRA have been out of the 'wrath' business for ten years, and Northern Ireland is more peaceful than ever.
You see I live in the 21st century, perhaps you'd like to join me here sometime?
IRA don't exist.? That's a bit like saying that because you don't find rabbit shit in your garden rabbits don't exist. The bombs the IRA left around were much more potent though... Whilst not currently operational, the people that were in it are still around as is the ancient hate (on both sides). And the IRA refused to comply with requirement to audit disposal of weapons prior to Stormont reopening. I wonder why...? I just hope all the young in Ulster can ignore the old men and move on together
Yes, even I was taken aback at the old prescience (is that the right word?!) of posting that a day before the initial attack on the barracks. Was not meaning to sound smart-arsed with my reply there either. Anyway, yes - I hope people are not drawn into this and that it does not escalates, which is the intention, I'm sure. As well as the intention to encourage a heavier UK military presence to whip up some more fury. Bad, bad, stupid, hateful men doing this. Ignore them people of NI!
i think that isnt possible 1kewldude3 becouse reagan died a couple of years aGO..And thatcher is to old to come back to power i think her power is gone her powerffull years are gone.. but it's still a shame she left the parlement so early..
