  • On the take your beating note, how do we reconcile the idea that our sin is paid for and we will never see what Revelation 20 calls "the second death" with the idea that in the Bible we do see God striking people with sickness and even death for their sins in THIS life (I Cor 11:30)? In that sense is God not a "punishing father who gives us disiplinary beatings for the purpose of justice and restoration?

  • 34 people wear crazy hats

  • Ladyly.... I am a jew, the bible was reveled to us and it's ridiculous when you guys interpret it in a childish and pagan way! Check Lewis Black about religion, you will understand a little more what I am talking about! lolol!!!!

  • Christianity is well known and truly established world wide as a religion. For centuries.

  • "Theism is religion"....Christianity is a religion. It is monotheism. It is also responsible for the deaths of millions. Pantheism or Panentheism is a loose term. I myself do not deem myself religious as I do not prey or go to church. There is no Panentheist church that follows the doctrines of my faith but the template fits other religions.

The opening comment of this well groomed preacher is wrong or hypocritical so he is either being:

    1) Ignorant

    2) Self rightious

    3) Deliberately rude

  • @MrCartoonguy So telling the TRUTH about other religions and what they do makes him wrong or hypocritical? He's trying to tell you about a way you can keep from being depressed, self medicated, and suicidal, but he's ignorant self righteous and rude? Sorry my friend the truth hurts and how can you be offended if your religion doesn't even believe in right or wrong? Learn the TRUTH before it's too late.

  • @Diachi26 no telling the TRUTH is something he cannot do. It is something that escapes you too by the look of it. He starts by attacking THEISM. He follows monoTHEISM himself. His monoTHEISM has caused more suicide and murder than any other faith to date. Many catholics burned at the stake and protestants, then so called witches and warlocks. Many wars in this name and so much abstainance from your true nature it makes one either depressed, repressed, controlled, weak, anxious,. Wake up.

  • @MrCartoonguy So I guess showing how objective moral values being completely misused over the years for personal gain supports your Idea for making subjective moral values without purpose while attacking whoever questions them; Which eventually leads to a world of incomplete knowledge, war, depression, self medication(drugs, sex, money, ect.), suicide, STDs and unyielding inevitable despair? What exactly were you trying to PREVENT or promote?

  • @Diachi26 He is attacking other faiths and promoting his views as the right ones. All other beliefs are inferior?

So strong in his convictions that all other people are beneath his superior line of thought and spirituality with the almighty being. So perfect. Can you think of another rhetorical preacher/leader like this who spoke so self rightiously in front of a cross type symbol? Millions followed that idiot too.

  • @MrCartoonguy If your trying to use this as an argument against the TRUTH of Christianity its a classic Ad Hominem. You're just attacking a CHARACTER of a person who holds a belief in order to try to invalidate the belief. A person can have a terrible character he can be arrogant he can be immoral he can be dishonest but yet the belief that he holds might well be true so you can't invalidate a belief by attacking the character of the person who holds the belief. He's just stating the facts.

  • @Diachi26 AD Hominem if you like but he is still behaving very oppresively and tyranically in his preaching. Let me ask you, how many armies of satanists have fought wars or burned as many young women and killed many native american indians? How many wiccans have raped and pilaged in the name of their gods in comparrison to the church? THE TRUTH? I know of people in churches who have affairs, suicides, and experienced mental illness. I have seen quite a few vicare paedophiles to in the media.

  • @Diachi26 I am trying to promote more people in religion to be humble. Stop using bible text to frighten people. For every vicars sermon or point the opposite can be argued back in all rightiousness in another chapter somewhere in the book. Slamming all other religions so undiplomatically is professional. Wording is everything. FEAR should not be used to control Xtians either. It is a lesser practice of maniputlation. I love the notion of christ and the good in that but it should not be stripped

  • Saying that subjective moral values lead to misery and suicide is something beyond your remit. It also shows that you need your morals given to you. Mine are in built. A conscience. Many people have them. Some of the wealthy billionaire evangialists do too. I worked in psychiatry for years. Ive seen that drugs, religion and family are the the common stressors. Most mental illness is biological and has nothing to do with belief. You said he was stating the facts? Panentheism isnt in the bible

  • @Diachi26 I am no longer going to argue with you. We have exchanged thoughts, some fiery, some cheeky and amusing. However, I would like to say that I hope you save yourself. I hope you find that real thing that surpasses the "televised spirituality". The bible holds many great things. It has keys to other things, other truths which are also great. As you said before, the reader can be faulty or arrogant. If so, do not listen to him then. Find the truth yourself. Many do not see it and preach.

  • I hope when my future son is 10 he will be that wise

  • Hinduism is polytheistic, monotheistic, pantheistic and Atheistic. Epic fail! Same with Pantheism.

  • @LycaonsBane

The difference is, you have to prove yourself worthy to God, which is by definition impossible. Christians aren't saved by works, but by the Grace of Jesus Christ. Mark Twain said it best: "Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit, you would stay out and your dog would go in."

  • I am not distant from my Gods or Goddesses. In every man and woman I meet, I see that they are connected to the Divine. They aren't distant from me, because I am always with them. I interact with the Divine Masculine and Feminine everyday. Your views of Theism are a bit off.

  • AHEM. I am an Agnostic Theist. I acknowledge the fact that I can neither prove nor disprove the existence of any sort of deity. However, I do look to both a Male and Female Divinity as my "God" and "Goddess". I do not believe that they judge me. My belief is that no one needs "saving" done to them. I believe the only thing you need to do to be "saved" is to find what YOUR path in life is, who you are, and find love. I believe that all paths lead to the Divine, whether they recognize it or not.

  • @TranscendCircle That is wrong,Jesus is the only way my dear friend....And if u want i can tell u how i am so sure.

  • This man is HOT! mmmm.... lol

  • Who is this schmuck??? Christianity is not Monotheistic!!!!

  • @lebaman Obviously you haven't taken a close look at the Bible.

  • this is horrible

  • @Enzo012 If God decided that any of us, rather Jesus's apostles or a serial rapist was "good enough", that would make Him unjust. Because His standard is absolute perfection. Could God have made us all perfect, rather than humanity being evil? Yes. But He didn't. Maybe He has some other universe like that. But the point is, we are dependent on Him. And I think He made it that way so that HE gets all the credit and all the glory.

  • by the way lol you got that hat joke from George Carlin huh loll

  • Comment removed

  • Dum dum, Christianity is a form of Theism. EPIC FAIL.

  • @Krapenhoeffer not quite epic fail... theism can also be a belief separate from Christianity... considering he is christian... we can assume he's not talking about that.

  • @TheDom66 which means it is still a religion. research some stuff about other religions.

  • @TheDom66 That's rather a strong presumption! When you consider there is no evidence for any divine beings at all.

Enzo012 put it rather well. Well said Enzo!!

  • @TheDom66 Cute.

  • @TheDom66 By definition,it IS a religion,get over it!

  • @knucks360 can u find the word Religion or the Word Christianity in the Bible.Tell me when you do that.

  • @MrUrosSrb That doesn't determine weather it's a religion or not sorry. Can you find the word Religion in the Quran? Or the Vedas?

  • @knucks360 U really dibt get it do you...Christianity isnt a religion its a belief in Christ.Other religions are works based while Christianity is based excusively on faith alone in Christ alone. The gifts of spirit and the good works come later...when u mature in faith.

  • @MrUrosSrb Well first of all, what does dibt mean? And so Christianity has different rules,so that means it's not a religion? All religions have different rules to achieve salvation. Please just look up the word religion, and you will see Christianity there with the other belief systems. You're just in denial, that's all. Also,I find it funny that as long as you have "faith" in christ, you can rape, murder,or commit just about any horrific crime and get away with it,yeah that seems fair.

  • @knucks360 People who truly have Christ will almost never do acts like. However, based on your judgement, where do you draw the line of what you should be able to get away with? Is a cuss word okay, or how about an argument, anger, or hate speech? What if it turns into a punch or slap? There is no way to mark one definite place where sin turns "too bad." Any one sin of any degree is enough to separate you from a holy perfect God for eternity, but Christ payed that penalty so you didn't have to.

  • @eingram21 So let me get this straight, since simply forgiving is just too hard,It made more sense for God to send himself to the earth to sacrifice himself to himself,to act as a loophole to save us from the sin he condemned us to because a dirt man and rib woman was fooled by a talking snake to eat a magical fruit. And if you don't believe that, you get TORTURED FOREVER!!! Unimaginable pain for eternity for getting angry,or saying a bad word,or getting into an argument. All I have to say is wow...

  • @knucks360 You can take any event/story and make it sound stupid by doing what you just did. One of God's qualities is that He is just, which means that sin must be punished. We are finite and deserved infinite separation from God as punishment, but Jesus took that punishment.

What if God didn't give us the option to sin? Then we would be robots who praise him without knowing any other option. Any concept is meaningless without its opposite, and God decided to let people have choice to sin.

  • @eingram21 I don't know how you could possibly make that story sound reasonable or plausible.

  • @knucks360 You sound like youre unconvicted. It sounds more like youre observing from a different perspective

  • @TheDom66 Well, no it is a religion.

  • @TheDom66

Pastafarianism is not a religion, it's a relationship with the living noodly appendages of the Mighty Spaghetti Monster!

  • @TheDom66 Amen! It's all about Jesus. He wants our heart, not our performance.

  • And Norse paganism is not a religion, it's a relationship with the living Loki, Thor.....

  • we call that ridiculous--religion.

  • Does this guy even notice that he is neatly describing Christianity while condecendingly talking about other religions' kookiness? "[Theism] goes to goofy, ridiculous religion and peolpe become proud or depressed". Right!! :-)

Also, that contradicts his earlier statement that ATHEISM causes depression. Cause if you do get depressed WITH religion too, well, then the entire argument is kind of a moot point!

  • Mark (good acting)something happened a long time ago, its was after Jesus died. Religion came along and crazies like you perverted the words of Jesus. Using a Book to spin your tales instead of preaching the words and work of Jesus. Mark, what you do is preach hate. You are a bigot and will be going to hell, according to the Bible, unless you change your ways. I pray that you see the light, and tell the story of Jesus...Love, Peace, Charity, without prejudices or condemnations.

  • If you obey a Creed, if you inherit a set of beliefs from those who came before you, if you accept spiritual truth because you were raised to and you obey, and if you refuse to search out and acknowledge universal, Divine truth in other religions, you are beyond religious. You’re dogmatic.

  • @PoisonedOath

Pastor Mark, you follow a dogmatic religion, and no matter how much you put down people of other faiths, that fact stands. There’s nothing inherently, objectively wrong with following a religion, and the case can even be made that dogma is OK. But when you, and those like you of creedal religion, start pretending you follow the Bible to the letter and don’t subject yourself to any “religious authority,” you’ve lied to everyone whose heard your voice.

  • Right off the bat. He says Hinduism is polytheistic. Hindus see their Gods as Christians see the Trinity - many (or three for Christians) in one. Ignorant, ignorant Christian.

“Obey the moral law, Jews will tell ya.” Yup, never heard of any “moral laws” in Christianity.

“Religious people are (insert 5 bad things here) and JUDGEMENTAL.” Snivelling hypocrite.

And then you made irrational statements about suffering. Not all theists believe God punishes them physically. That’s more Christian.

  • @PoisonedOath y'know, of all the possible descriptions that could be slapped on Driscoll, I don't know that "snivelling" would be one of them.

  • @superlindz

He confuses grovelling before God and spitting in the face of people of other faiths for piety and fulfilling Christ’s commandment to love. It’s snivelling and hypocritical.

  • @PoisonedOath I just meant that I've always thought of snivelling as a word for a guy who won't front up to people's faces.

  • @superlindz

    Oh. Hmmm. Perhaps. haha

Might be the wrong word to use then.

  • Was you talking about yourself about the smugness of the religious?

  • Philosophical Hinduism is Pantheistic or Panentheistic. Thus, there is an Ultimate Reality or One Being. If you want to simplify Hinduism for an agenda, at least give yourself a similar description: Abrahamic Monotheism is the pantheon of polytheism turned to henotheism, to a cleared pantheon of all but one god. thus, we are left with YHWH. The problem IS the pantheon. btw incarnation is an idea embraced by biblical figures. e.g. John the Baptist. Hence, he thought Jesus was Elijah.

  • Such wonderful truth here. In seven minutes I laughed out loud ("knees") and teared up at the end. If only most Christians understood that we do not follow religion. I love Jesus Christ, and am so grateful that He drew me to Him. May God allow me to show Him to be beautiful! May God bless Mars Hill richly, and Pastor Mark.

  • Pastor Driscoll where does your "AUTHORITY" come from? Please don't tell me it came from a school/college or better known as "man's authority"? Men like you claim they know God's will, and constantly misinterpret doctrine. I know Moses was called, Jacob was called, I think you get were I'm going with this. Where do you get your "authority" to act as a disciple of God. You preach that all sinners will be okay in the end, if they love God. Hitler, Pol-Pot, Stalin all going to heaven?

  • very clearly explained...thanks :)

  • LOL!

my god, even his definition of theism is wrong.

"we have sinned and were all guilty" i dont know a single non religious theist who has ever said that. Your definitions of deism and theism are both just retarded versions of christianity...

  • Really cool video

  • yeah, we're gonna give an account, yeah we're all guilty, but heres the difference... theres no savior.

I litterally gasped at that point.

  • @Enzo012 Yes.

  • @Enzo012

Ourselves. If you look real good, very nearly everything that's going wrong in the world, humanity is doing to itself. God gave us free will, the choice to follow Him or not.

  • @Jerkwad152 Most people in the world do follow God even if there is some disagreement as to which God we should be following. Though any problem created by humanity can be fixed by humanity and it can done without invoking the supernatural.

  • @Enzo012 Some months ago I read a short story written by Ferreira de Castro, which goes with your opinion. If there is some english translation from Ferreira de Castro, I don't know. This short story calls "O Senhor dos Navegantes". Ferreira de Castro is a Portuguese writer.

  • @Jerkwad152 We may be doing it to ourselves but who else is going to do it to ourselves? It's a bit of a moot point.

  • @Enzo012 yes.... from his punishment of your evil

  • @Enzo012 No. Not himself. He's saving us from ourselves. From our wickedness and inability to be "good enough".

  • @RLHawk1 He could easily just have decided that we are "good enough" if he's the one making the rules as to what "good enough" is and he was the one who decided how good humans ought to be on average in the first place. It would be easier than having all this sacrifice of his son business, so it all seems a bit unnecessary if he could just have decided to forgive us, if that's what he wanted to do.

  • @Enzo012 Well said, Enzo!!

  • @Enzo012 Lulz, you win the internet!

  • @Enzo012 From judgement.

  • Right...and Christianity isn't full of silly rules, hypocrites, and crazy religious people. I'm confused about what this guy is preaching. He's a Christian, right?

  • @beaners448 Yup sure is, its full of people :)

  • "God doesn't love you because YOU'RE good, He loves you because HE'S good." That's gorgeous.

  • what a self-righteous, closed-minded dick.

  • Religious people as well as atheists argue amungst themselves what is good and bad but then they say no ones perfect (so it's back to the "We're all sinners" idea christianity believes in the first place) and amungst the bad things, they start to decide what is acceptable... Porn addiction is good, rape is bad,pro choice is good, abortion is acceptable bla bla bla.. and it's alwayse them who decide. And then they start telling Jesus who never did wrong"who is he to juje and claim glory?"

  • Does anyone know if the technical definition of "Theism" used by philosophers excludes Christianity? I assumed that theism would include Christianity.

Maybe he excluded it himself to prove his point that Christianity is different? A link would be great if you have it.

  • sheep's

  • Wow... for somebody who makes a big deal out of theology, he sure has a poor knowledge of Hindu belief systems.

  • What a huge half-truth/misrepresentation of Mormonism he uses to try to prove his point. Mormons do believe that we have the ability to become "like god", or a sinless, perfected state, but we, first and foremost, believe that this is only possible through the Atonement of Christ. Without the Savior, there is no point to existence because we can not be forgiven of our innumerable sins without the sacrifice of the Savior. We have always believed this. Where did this "no Savior" come from?

  • I love how the Atheist always never mention the reason for the affairs which will happen, nor do they listen to them.

  • See Christianity is different, because in that religion God waits til after you are dead to unleash his beating on you. What a joke...

  • The last man's life settles into the grave. Our world is now left in ruins. Extinction exists across the Earth. Eulogy imprinted on their hearts. Humanity now forgotten in the void. Do you know the cause of the universe's failure? The cowardly white light of god is to blame. The church weakness and suffocates the will. Man-made plague to poison the race. Fools live to be led by fools. Holy arrogance builds on their mountain ignorance. This world of misery and you are to blame.
  • "religious people are the worst" what the fuck are you guy.

  • He's a follower of Jesus.

  • yeah and islamic people are followers of muhamed i fail to see the difference.

  • @matthewkeri12345

    I don't think you're looking.

  • stupidity is the scariest thing in the world

p.s. i don't mean that he is correct or wrong

  • Comment removed

  • How is he lying?

  • @PiroHamster 1. theism means the belief in god(s)....thats all that means! It doesn't mean everyone is a sinner or anything like that.

    2. Hinduism is a monotheistic religion

    3. reincarnation in Hinduism is not to suffer forever but to be able to become like god so you can be with him.

    4. He said that other religions' god is not ever going to help you in this life (which is not true to those religions)

Reply to me if I was wrong on any of the stuff that i said, i could give you others if u want.

  • This is brilliant!

Who would of thought it would be so easy to prove Christianity right. Apparently all you have to do is completely misrepresent and lie about every other religious position out there and hey presto!

  • Someone's been negative during Christmas...

  • As far as I know, you don't HAVE to believe in God's judgment to be a theist like he suggested.

  • Mark just layed it down. Well put sir.

  • If reading this you think, "well I suppose that christianity IS a theistic belief, and it seems he has over expanded the definition of the term," then we have something in common

  • 1.the belief in one God as the creator and ruler of the universe, without rejection of revelation (distinguished from deism ).

2.belief in the existence of a god or gods (opposed to atheism ).

  • When he says "religious people are the worse" I wish he would qualify it by saying "religious people without Christ" are the worse. Why are so many churches moving in the direction that religion is bad?

  • jon, because "religion" is what the Pharisees followed. "Religion" is a set of rules that can't be fulfilled by men, but still demanded of one another. Christianity wasn't meant to "be a religion" but a following of the Messiah, who atoned for the sins of all of mankind. Religiousness leads to hypocrisy and pride every time.

  • But that isn't what religion is. Religion is a good thing as long as it is not man-made (James 1:27). 'Religion' simply means 'godly practice'. If a Christian isn't religious, how are we to know he's even a Christian? In the Bible 'religion' is a good word so long as it is God-made, so why are we allowing it to become a universal bad word?

  • Perhaps that isnt what religion is "supposed to be" .. but unfortunately ... its what it has become

:o( ... and I don't mean now, in this century. Even Yeshua spoke of "religion" vs. faith.

  • Agreed. A Fathful disciple of Christ is religious. A faithful christian prayys religiously like Christ commanded he keeps Christ's command, He keeps his ordinances. These are godd things i too tire of this relationship / religion thing like religion is bad in of itself.

  • Jesus has paid the price! LOL come on man be fair to the people your leaving out half the story about how jesus has paid for the tickets but he only hands them out to people who jump through the hoop of belief.. - Requirement ( um god needs, interesting, must be lacking something ) God saves from the very thing that God created SIN, the cross is a solution to Gods on problem God created and if he dont get his way your off to some firey place LOL man this is so primitive..

  • God doesn't need faith,we need faith.God did not create sin,his creation created sin.The cross is a solution to mans problem,it was done for us out of love,it is a privilege.God doesn't need us but he loves us.If you don't accept the sacrifice and you don't accept forgiveness or as you put it ticket ,then you are not cleansed you don't want God you want your sin.God can have no part of sin.Hell is required and a justified punishment for not wanting God and what he offers.Your choice.

  • dedred5, yes God doesnt need faith, and we dont need it either. Yet you think we do as you believe we are seperate from GOD. that is your stumbling block my friend. Creation didnt create sin as sin doesnt exist, yet for the sake of you gulible folk i will entertain your story. God is everything! every_thing, so the in between which you think seperates us from GOD is what you would refer to as something. Some_thing.. God is everything.. even the something, continue to live in your sad story

  • Christianity has RULES, wake up and learn your own faith. You say God is moral.. yet the same God will punish you for not believing.. sounds like a nice dad LOL

  • God must justly punish sin and the sinner if you don't accept his sacrifice.Yes,there are rules,God can have no part with sin. This same Dad gives you a chance not to go to hell, and to be a part of something that has any real importance.Justice is required the same as any horrific crime committed against you,you would also require justice and that the offender be punished. That is what's moral.

  • ded5 as for punish sin. There is no sin yet you think there is and so you accept teaching that it requires punishment. So you think its morally right as a DAD to punish a person for being born into your imaginery sin which your DAD has created and allowed to exist because he couldnt follow his own teaching on forgiveness LOL You story is so full of holes its so primitve

  • Let me bring this home for you man as you really are teaching some rough stuff here. You are painting christianity as being different from Theism from islam.. yet whlle you spreak of Grace, unless your a universlist christian which your not.. Your religion still requires a work.. a work of belief or punishment.. THEIST! you are

  • How is faith or belief a work?Is accepting something work or a work?

  • Dedred5 ( belief is a work, a work is a requirement ) God requires.. i think not

  • YOUR A THEIST!!!.. man this guy is hilarious.. let me guess you will end this video with the same crap. depression, self-medication, suicide.. LOL

  • "No God loves the bad people" Thanks goodness! That's me!!!

  • He still loves you, that's why he sent his Son as atonement. The greatest love you'll ever hope to understand.

  • dedred5 God loves, Religion has fabritcated the story of sin and seperation

  • The truth of sin is revealed every time I commit one or witness it being committed. The Spirit of God convicts me of sin,and this spiritual intervention, that goes beyond the simple work of my previous conscience, that just so happened to begin to manifest itself at the same point in my life when I truly sought God and to really understand His Holy Sacrifice and the implications and effects it has done for me.Then why does it also effect so many others? Is it all a form of mass hypnotism?

  • Comment removed

  • @WaitingforChrist - Christianity is a theistic belief, you idiot.

  • Very well done Mark. One of your best sermons. Great job on teaching your son too by the way.

  • "Just take your beating, i'm sure you deserved it"

Why did jesus die on the cross? Didn't he take our beating, because we deserved it?

Having someone else take the beating doesn't change the overall picture.

  • Sure it does if you understand the overall God of this universe. He's holy and He hates sin. We're sinners and are in NEED of a Savior. Hence the Cross. Jesus paid the fine where you and I broke God's law. It's as simple as that.

  • "Jesus paid the fine where you and I broke God's law. It's as simple as that. "

The point the guy was making is that the "fine" itself is silly. That the idea of people being born with sin on their heads is an unfair concept.

And then he goes on to say that christianity solves this by saying jesus paid the fine. But the fine is still there. The inherent unfairness is still there. It's just painted over by having someone else pay it.

  • So if I'm understanding you right, YOU want to pay that fine instead? Sorry, but you can't in any shape, form or fashion. And it would only be "unfair" if you hadn't committed any sins. Yet, you have committed sins and you heap upon yourself God's wrath which abides on you unless you repent and trust in Jesus alone for your salvation. Explain to me why you think its "unfair".

  • First off were created,WE DESERVE NOTHING.We have no justification in saying fair and unfair, our humanly knowledge cannot even grasp the wisdom of God.A kid in a store asks for a toy from their mother. The mother says no,the kid cries and complains that it's unfair. The mother tries to explain they're broke and can't even pay the bills. The kid having no understanding of responsibility, economics and being poor, so it continues to cry, unfair. We act the same way.Instead of trusting in God.

  • dedred5 LOL of course you believe that we deserve nothing has that is what you have been taught. You are merely living on the teachings of others. As for your store analogy thats a sad attempt at trying to validate your beliefs. Unfornetely you stumble at one big point. God.. God requires nothing yet your religion has painted God has requiring from us, hence the need to believe, hence the need to accept a religious teaching otherwise be burned by an immoral God

  • The analogy was not to validate my beliefs but to express mans actions against the wisdom of God.God does not require us,we require his forgiveness.God is already there he doesn't need our beliefs to prove he exists and that He died for us, we need our beliefs to obtain it.Everything we do requires us to believe from tying our shoes to believing in God.The unbelief and non acceptance is our downfall.

  • mebluesky323.. Actually my friend there are many views concerning the cross and jesus.. you are referencing your stance from ONE POINT OF VIEW only, you actually think that is the only point of view concerning christ either because you have only learned one point or you will only accept one point of view. Your going to have to wade through a lot before you can start defending your religion
