Robert Talton refined the counterfeit bill image and color. He glued the paper he found useful with the front and the back together, but not without drawing a counterfeit watermark. This man had a gang to pass the many counterfeits, so it was difficult for police to track him down.

One way to check if a bill: shine it under a black light.

Most fake bills may be made using paper that has whiteners, which will fluoresce under a black light while genuine bills won't.

But this is just one way to do it and it can be defeated if the counterfeiter used paper that is not treated with whitener.

Other steps are to detect for microprint features, metallic ink denoting the value of the bill on the lower right, the watermark portrait, and the security strip embedded in the paper.
