Yahoo just posted an article giving credit to "Human-powered flight stays airborne
History is made after a grad student at the University of Toronto sustains altitude and airspeed for 19.3 seconds while traveling about 145 yards at an average speed of 16 mph.
September 24, 2010|By Thomas H. Maugh II, Los Angeles Times"...needless to say this article is grossly erroneous, per the above video data on the Gossamer Condor and Albatross flightsof the late 1970s.
they look too weak for bad weather conditions and too big. maybe they could make them smaller if they had two propellers and a faster gear ratio so you can pedal slow but still get the speed thatsneeded for lift. think a hand glider shape would work. wish i had the time and space to build one
Leonardo Da Vinci had this dream too of man powered flight, unfortunately he didn't had the knowhow and materials..... But one thing is sure...If you want to create, you need to dare to dream....
I knew Mr Mc Cready when he was president of the I.H.P.V.A in the mid 80s to the mid 90s. A great man with a wonderful imagination. I was a builder and racer of My own creations at that time. Although My later vehicles never were as good, Simple Cycle 1 was held up by him (minus the bodyshell), as, "a perfect example of doing more with less!", during the 1990 I.H.P.S.C. in Portland OR.. I came in 5th place in the practical vehicle compition, that year.
What the left out in the video was that Paul MacCready needed the prize money because he was the guarantor for a friend's loan, and his friend's business flopped :P
He would have done it either way. By the time he got done and cashed the check he'd spent almost the entire prize money amount on the Condor project anyway.
@Roncace A remastered DVD is now available. Do a search for shedd productions and flight gossamer condor. I just bought and watched it--amazing! Some things are worth paying for. There is also an excellent Nova (PBS) episode called "The Light Stuff" about an MIT team recreating the mythological Greek flight of Daedalus, also available (VHS). More people ought to know about these.

I have always wondered if filling the wings with helium was ever considered.It would of made the plane a lot lighter or even lighter than air.

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology:
(1) Why do we want to design and to fly human powered aeroplane while we have jet engine?
(2) Why is the enjoyement to fly human powered aeroplanes?
(3) Why do we think that flying a human powered aeroplanes is an expression of human's full-potential (self-actualization)?
I mean that we have been in jet-age already.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)

Dear All,
I have some questions about psychology:
(1) Why do we love flying?
(2) Why do we enjoy to pilot our own personal flying vehicle?
(3) In the future, what will we feel about flying when flying is just like driving a car?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm!!! :)

Couldn't you just use a balloon to offset your weight? That way you wouldn't have to work so hard to stay in the air all you'd have to do is steer.
NeoConSIayer 2 years ago
not really. Youd have to peddle just as hard to over come the air resistance of a baloon big enough
superjezz 2 years ago
@NeoConSIayer
The rules of the Kremer prizes forbid lighter than air components.

I want to work with computers, maybe a computer engineer. I would also like to work on a ship. Ship engineers get to work all around the world.

@ChiefDarren
Pretty sure he said 'full left'. How was that funny? They were trying to minimise damage to the airframe.
scv405 2 years ago
wow you're really the pedaling aircraft's gunslinger aren't you? it was funny because of how faggy his voice sounded. that's why it was funny.

@ChiefDarren
Sounded pretty hetero to me, but I guess it takes one to know one...
scv405 2 years ago
@ChiefDarren When this was shown on PBS in 78 or so, the audio was uncensored and the pilot was cursing in between screams.
