actually haldex works not when wheel slippage occurs but when the front axle tends to rotate faster - it also works when accelerating. the front wheels are powered only when driving with constant speed.
The audi is a car for everything and every day and you can use it as your main car.
You can go shopping and to the racetrack. You can drive to the casino and with your family.. The subaru is like a 2nd car to have fun and have great lap times. If you have an audi it`s understatement and that`s what i like. The quality inside and outside the car is also better. really love the subaru. but i need somthing for every day. So i have baught the audi s3 (8p 310hp) :)
2. Manual control on the car is better than computers.
(However I'm not sure the insurance would be happy if they can prove you didn't have ESP enabled when you crashed, which would say you were racing for example!)
Dude you guys rule! I am a huge fan of Top Gear (UK version) and you are the only ones I personally think give great reviews from worthy and reliable people who know how to drive cars and KNOW cars. WELL DONE!!
This review is really only of use if your planning on buying an S3 or STi to use at or near their limits on the track and not for the 99% of owners that only use them on the road, the comfort, mod cons, power delivery, cheaper insurance and better mpg of the S3 are going to beat the STi any day and if you need a bit more power then a simple remap will give the S3 in excess of 315bhp.
Yes I'm an Audi owner (A4 1.8t quattro sline 190 remapped to 225) but have always liked Scoobies since watchin
I have 06 STi but also 07 A3 as a DD. I was hoping to find an A3 with Quattro in manual but it was either manual FWD or automatic AWD in the US market so I had to go for the manual. Glad to know I'm not missing too much without the haldex Quattro in the A3. However even without AWD I think A3 is still fun to drive for a FWD car, and it doesn't understeer as much as you would think.

tim is so true and unbiased in his reviews. I love that guy!
most german reviews stump jap cars into the ground, comparing with native, german rivals. Tim doesnt, he just tells the truth. same thing with rs6 and evo wagon)
I LOVE this review because of it's unbiased commentary, and how Tim makes it clear just how each car behaves and handles. Not to mention, he explains how to drive fast. Brilliant! Makes me want to take my STi out now and flog some on-ramps :-D
This is the best test drive I have seen on Youtube. Tim is a legend. The 9:00 mark is just gold. I've read and watched so many review that whine about understeer. Tim doesn't whine, he just addresses the problem with more aggression. BTW I love how Jeremy bagged the sti and then it best the Evo X around the track!
@oistein74 To elaborate, Tim is much more precise in the telling of the performance of a car and avoids using analogies, which might get confusing, that Jeremy uses.
Germany and Japan are good friends since a long time ago. They have much in common (kind people, well educated people, history), so it's natural they both produce excellent cars too. But, choose wich car is the best for you, is a personal thing. You just have to make a test drive and make a conclusion by yourself. Don´t believe/depend on what TV says.
I'm really impressed. I thought a German program testing a German car against a Japanese car would be biased. I thought they would sandbag in the Subie and go all out in the Audi, but he was honest. I'll have to start watching more of this program. Thanks for posting.
Agreed, I am used to watching Best Motoring (JP version of course), Top Gear, Fifth Gear etc but I was really impressed now neutral Tim was and the explanation's were spot on. Will look out for more D MOTOR
Great video. The sti seems to be a lot of fun. A great car. If only it didn't look the way it does... Personally, I still prefer the aesthetics of the peanut eye and pig nose sti.
yeah the sti comes with DCCD here in the US, I do not know for a fact if it come with DCCD in europe, but I think it might be an option? I know that Subaru wanted to incorporate it into its euro cars.
Thanks man! I all ready know it. The STI comes with DCCD! I've been to a dealer for a testdrive. What a hell of a car! Crazy to drive. When you drive it, you forget that it's ugly :P
given the S3 perfomance numbers, it is probably better matched against the 2009 wrx than an STI if not even the 2.5gt (i.e., 2008 wrx). Yet, audi's quality and luxury gives impreza something to think about for the the future. Not to mention that the STI could really benefit from a great DSG as an option for some despite the price premium, though I doubt Suby will find the R&D money any time soon, heck, they still push 4-speed autos with most cars.

Audi sucks ... I'm surprised no one said this here in the comments ... Only good thing coming out of their factory is the R8

Interesting to see that:
1. Old school is better than new.
2. Manual control on the car is better than computers.

I love this guy... he makes it very interesting and is good at explaining car characteristics.
He's so right about, "if you try to brake, turn in, then give it throttle... the understeer will drive you mad."
