  • I happily stand corrected. Thanks for the info. I always love learning more about the great bands. :) Glad I did not bet somehitng serious like a Latte from Starbucks !

  • I believe Serenade to a Cuckoo was written by the great Dave Brubeck and appeared on their first album

  • @duchessofpercy You would have lost that particular bet. "Serenade To A Cuckoo" was written and first performed by the great Roland Kirk, and appears on his 1964 album "I Talk To The Spirits". As he states in the liner notes to Tull's first album, Ian learned to play flute listening to Kirk- and in fact, copped his whole style from him, including the humming and snorting. I forgive him, though, for his completely original singing/songwriting. There are Kirk vids up on YouTube. Check it! :)

  • Ian anderson is the best

  • Jethro Tull can divide by zero.

  • p.s. - that guy should be shot for talking during their performance!

  • King Henry VIII wrote a poem called Serenade To A Cuckoo

  • nice ty.

  • Kevin is just barely smart enough to get Ian and the boys some coffee. Talking and thinking aren't his "bag"...Ian and Tull? What can you say...sheer genius.

  • wich album is skating away from??

  • @thedoctormachine1 War Child

  • hell Barre looks like your wood shop teacher

  • pure genius!!

  • wouldn't hear much of Peggy of they were unplugged

  • Splendid!

  • this is a gem. thanks

  • So good!

  • Is the host high?

  • 0:16 is the money shot.

  • Ian makes everyone seem stupid

  • @Kirkola Well intellectuals have that tendency you know? Yet Ian holds his wisdom well under implosive people.

  • man hi voice is actually really good here, too bad its gotten so much worse since then

  • @meowandmeow Ian lost his lungs. He was a real heavy smoker and I bet he has COPD now. He seems really short of breath.

  • That was class!

  • This was a surprise to see! Really good, thanks for the video.

  • The Mad Genius of Rock and Roll. Absolutely brilliant as a musician and a person.

  • Jethro Tull on MTV? In person? The world WAS better back then....

  • lmfao martin looks like a registered sex offender

    <3

  • I never knew martin had joined the Hitler youth !

  • Oh, I couldn't put my finger on his odd behavior. I'm a huge lover of most of Tull's music but I've noticed that many people either love him or hate him. Some of the graphic lyrics scares off some and then there's a few religious references in a couple of songs. Eye-opening and motivational for me since the 70's. Thanks for the info!

  • Great sounds. The host seemed stoned or starstruck.

  • @offtheshoulderpro If you watch the unedited version of this performance elsewhere on YouTube (you'll have to hunt around for it) you'll see Kevin Seal seems a bit disinterested in the band. After all, he's more a product of the New Wave era.

  • If someone lost his time. Order mhmhhmmmm.

  • What's Martin Barre doing looking like an insurance salesman?! This is an EXCELLENT post!

  • It's stunning to consider, in the light of what how MTV has transformed, that Jethro Tull could ever have been featured on the network, or that there were Pink Floyd MLoR tour specials and such. It used to be good!

  • @mahajohn Once they sold to Viacom it was a steady creep into crapdom.

  • Whatever Ian says, he sounds so intelligent.

  • Well they did the A Little Light Music live album mainly in response that Tull was not 'big enough' for their Unplugged series. Tull went to them and were all in for it but MTV wanted "bigger names". And I'm sure Tull could have pulled a "Dude Looks Like A Lady" type song if needed LOL

  • @DPMomutant There is loads of electric guitar on that album so your comment does not really make sense. Tull have always done loads of "unplugged" type of music. Many of there concerts have had acoustic only sections and of cause there was the Acoustic Tour back in 07.

  • that host is such a dork.

  • AHHH Memories...Back when the letters MTV actually meant something cool...

  • Interesting! Ian was on the verge of losing his voice and sings a few of the parts a 3rd lower than usual especially the chorus. Still an amazing performance.

  • Thanks for uploading- this is excellent. Ian is just the best, most interesting rock star ever.

  • Great that people videod things like this and took the time to put it on here. Well done billbadford.

  • A true talent of my day , I watched on TV as Jethro Tull beat out Metallica for a Best Live Performance award ... and rightfully so.

  • weird... i heard three harmonies ... was martin singing too? :O

  • @psychobollox

    wow - yes he was!!!!!

  • Man who spoke snake language !

  • He sounds just he did in the 70s! Wish his voice stayed like this!

  • Crikey! Martin's singing!

  • FANTASTICO

  • Questa musica è semplicemente straordinaria,MITICI JETHRO TULL

  • A hidden gem. Thanks for uploading this.

  • @jermaschinot If I recall correctly, it was this one-off performance that inspired the MTV "unplugged" era. Notice how Kevin Seal and the producers seem impressed and ask "Have you ever thought about going acoustic?" Shortly after that EVERYONE was going acoustic on their network.

  • Very good quality. Thanks.
