  • Wonderful Robin, thanks so much!

  • Good tutorial, thx :)

  • I DONT WANT STUPID ARROWHEADS!

  • @MrRobinWilms Then follow the tutorial, and turn them off under the options. It's very simple to do.

  • Thanks so much, Robin! Great tutorial and very helpful!

  • @lokeelee Thanks! I'm glad you liked it.

  • 10x :]

  • I can't get the lines to fill in ... I've used the pen tool and dragged the line across where I want it, but when I let go of the mouse, the line doesn't become solid. What am I not seeing?

  • @Jehanneforte If you're using the Pen tool, you need to Stroke the line in order to make it solid. Do that by going to the Paths panel, and clicking the "stroke" button, second from the left at the bottom, while the Path is active. That uses the current Brush for the stroke.

To use something else, hold down the Option key (alt on a PC) while clicking the button, then pick a tool from the menu.

The Line tool is grouped with the Custom Shape, etc. 3 down from the Pen tool on the toolbar.

  • Thank you so much.

This was very helpful. You have a very pleasant way of explaining (easy and good to understand (language and explanations)).

  • @BlackCatKaya Thanks! I'm glad you found it helpful.

  • All i get is arrows I DONT WANT FCKN ARROWS UGH fck photoshop I just want LINES

  • @AOYF83 You don't need to swear.

If you watch the tutorial, you'll see that there's a flippy triangle to the right of the tools, (Pen, Freeform Pen, Rectangle, Rounded Rectangle, Ellipse, Polygon, Line and Custom Shape tools.) With the Line tool selected, click on that triangle, and you'll get a menu that lets you turn the arrowheads off or on, or adjust the size. Click to disable them, and you'll have plain old lines, any weight you want.

  • speak up

  • Plenty on arrow heads but not much on different types of line. For instance how do you make a connected string of lines. I've been trying to do this and thought this might be explained.

  • @PeterWTaylor You can't make a connected string automatically. The line tool makes one line at a time. To make a string, you just click to end the line, and then click again to start a new one without moving your mouse. If you want a continuous line, you might want to use the Path tool, and stroke your path. You can't get nice corners easily with the line tool, I'm afraid.

  • "from the tip to the base..." lol, sorry to be childish but loved this selection of words in the arrowhead section .

Very well done video, you obviously know what you're talking about so thanks for spending the time to make the video!

  • WHen I select the line tool it draws an arrow or star. I have not selected these symbols from the drop down menu. I have never been able to use the line tool because of this. I have re-statred re-installed photoshop, it seems that it is like this by default....can you help

    ?

  • @greenpillot It can't make a star. That's simply not one of the things the line tool can do. Check, and make sure that the Custom Shape isn't selected in the Option/Command bar at the top of the window, right under the menu bar.

It can make arrowheads. To make it stop, click the triangle at the end of the row of icons in the Option/Command bar, and disable "Arrowheads."

If you are sure you have Line Tool, Arrowheads isn't enabled, and the behavior persists contact Adobe. It shouldn't do that.

  • Thanks been looking everywhere for that line tool just couldn't remember where it was.

  • thanks

  • I wanna cry tears of joy… lol thank you for this!

  • ur voice is like so perfect no homo

  • @aztecpoloPS3 its a girl.

  • Thanks, everyone who found it helpful.

Umm... for those who don't know, I'm female. That's why my voice is higher than a man's voice would be.

dannyjerome0, if you could post a video of what you did, I might be able to tell you what's going on.

  • @RobinWoodEnt Very nice tutorial. I sure use the tool for some border-window design. Also really like your voice. ;-)

  • u fuking legend didnt know how to get rid of the arrow heads and at last u hv shown me ! nice squeaky voice btw :P

  • you sound like a goblin

  • was actually wondering how to make arrows in photoshop :) thanks!!!

  • What if, when i want to do some lines an arrow shows up instead of the line?

  • what I am trying to do is use the line/arrow tool to make some red arrows pointing to items in a jpg image. I can make the arrows just find (thank you :) but I want to outline/highlight the arrows with a 5px boarder/highlight effect and I can not see how to do that. can you assist me ?

    thank you,

  • Thanks for posting this tutorial. Real simple and great voice!

  • I've got a bit of a problem with my line tool, it curves how it's supposed to, but it doesn't make a simple line, it just stretches the line out so I've got something like a circular shape, any ideas?

  • perfect tutorial!

  • Great help Robin!! Thanx a lot. Great video

  • u rule you totally fix my stuff, it was stuck as arrow heads, also you sound sexy

  • lady has a arrow head fetish

  • I'm sorry that I didn't watch the comments for this video more carefully, and I missed some that were made months ago. :(

To manually change the shape of the arrow, make sure it's not rasterized, and then get the white arrow Direct Selection tool. (A, or Shift A till you have it.)

Click on the arrow, and you'll see little boxes that are the control points. Just manipulate them, as you would any path, to change the shape of the arrow. You can even use the Convert Point tool, and get curves!

  • lizziemobley, that's very true. It doesn't work with the brush. All the brush does it put down pixels.

If you want to make arrows with the Brush tool, you'll have to manually draw your arrow head and tail.

Or you could make an arrow, draw a marquee around it, and save it as a Brush. (Edit > Define Brush Preset.) That will give you an arrow that you can repeat many times, but it won't let you change the arrow heads, the curve, or anything else.

For that, you do have to use the Line tool.

  • It's actually fairly simple. Just make your arrow as you normally would. It doesn't matter if you make it into pixels (rasterize it) or leave it as a path.

Assign a layer style by clicking the fx button at the bottom of the layer panel. I'd recommend Stroke, Inner Glow, or Outer Glow, with the latter 2 set to a dark color and Multiply blend mode.

Then, at the top of the layer panel, change the Fill, just below Opacity, to 0%. That will remove the arrow, leaving just the Layer Style (outline.)

  • Great tutorial! Thank you so much.

However, I'm currently trying to figure out if it's possible to get JUST the outline of an arrow. So that instead of it being filled with black, I can see the image on the layer below. Is this even possible? Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • thank you so much for this video!

  • What if you have a brush tool instead of a pen tool? It isn't working =O

  • Very useful! Thank you very much!

  • nevermind.. theyre just the skewing points! watever... thx! :)

  • how did u add the 2 points on both sides of the center point without clicking anything? 6:08

  • Thank you for this video. I learned about the spring loading, and the arrowheads, on top of the basic line tool. I missed, however, how you made the tail of the final arrow taper away to a point. Thanks, again.
