I observe that the psd file with 3d layer when it was exported in AE it has already its own camera.

I have photoshop CS4 and After effects CS4.

I had a 3d model from Maya and export to Photoshop as .obj and save it as PSD and then export it in AE.

My problem was that when i export it to AE in live 3d photoshop, it says an error that no 3d photoshop files found.

Did i miss something, Im really frustrated cause i search everywhere in the net to find solution but still no good... hope you can help me with this.... Tnx....

you can't create 3D models in photoshop dude, you can only paint it

Wrong... you can paint or draw on a layer and make it a 3D bump map.

photo shop is mostly used for 2d painting.

you can save the bump map and import it into your UV mesh.

there is a thing called displacement mapping, kind of like bump mapping, you use a greyscale image and it renders a

3d scale of the normal.

however a bump map is only limited to distorting light on a flat surface. :-)

Mostly used for finer detail such as skin pores or tiny cracks.

it gives depth by bending the light on the uv normals :-)

most games now adays use bump mapping for detail

I have used Maya 7 and photoshop to model, rig, texture, animate, render, etc...but I have never used CS4 after effects! Can anyone tell me the difference in quality and fuctions availabe? Is this software a consumer compared to prosumer 3d graphics applications like softimage, 3ds max and maya?

I personally believe that After Effects is best for say making TV advertisements, it has basic 3D with lighting (apparently not with 3D models from photoshop, according to this video - I get CS4 in a week, so let me know if you want to stay updated.)

I reckon maya is better for actual character animation. I haven't used Maya that much, in fact, hardly at all, but I know that it is better for character animating than AE.

I made that in After Effects CS3 - basic 3D, but with lighting, good for advertisements because you can do pretty much all the effects (that come to mind) that you can do in photoshop, just instead, it's animated.

I dunno, the best way to test it out is to try the trial version from Adobes website.

Simple terms : AE is for Motion graphics. 2D, 2.5D Compositing. You can fake 3d in some ways. But has nothing to do with XSI or Maya. Those programs are for creating beautiful and complex 3D Characters/environments and a large range of animations with solid geometry and polygons. AE is very limited in what you can do. Is nice to have it. but do not rely in AE for 3D work.

me personally, I prefer Maya. :-)

the User interface is very user freindly

excellent suit of modelling tools.

and the viewport is easy to navigate in.

shader networks are great to work with, and the use of PSD networks cuts production time in half.

among many other aspects to benifet from using Maya

the most interesting is the use of MEL scripts(maya embeded language)

and how you can incorporate any command you want.

over all it depends on how well you know the interface.

hey, Im a huge fan of Maya. :-) been working with maya for about 4 years now. and still learning. looking for online freinds to chat with and share ideas. mostly my strong points are in architectual visualisation and story boarding :-) I do alot of work on modelling and texturing Im aware of the great animation tools in Maya, but my talents mostly rely on design. I need freinds who are intrested in doing a progect. :-) animation character modelling rendering/shading networks dynamics.

if u draw the basic on illustrator, and save it on PDF format, u can import it on rinhoceros 4.0, it's very bad for render or animating, but for model it's very nice

studio 3d max or maya are very good too, but if u wanna just model, rhino is the law

I think you confuse the "3D format" with the "Texture"

CS4 can save material settings but that isn't much in the overall scheme of things. You are at the mercy of the 3D model design which you cannot alter in CS4. I would also assume you need the model to be UV Mapped in order to apply a texture. I do not think you can apply a texture unless it has a UV Map already in the model. Again, the texture is separate from the model and not to be confused with material settings (like basic color)

no, it saves out as a .psd file so there would be no keyframe or motion data only model data.
