6:28 that arrow hitting the sail originally was not planned but an extra's accident. they rewrote the scene on the spot and reedited it so the one arrow was a ceremonial one and the remaining arrows were supposed to follow.
@kittenmouse23 I wish that neither died, & they could've ruled over the vikings as brothers, but I guess someone had to die there. lol to also consider that I was named after the viking king, Ragnar
Is anyone else but me pissed off with this ending. I mean seriously Einar should have lived and Eric should have died. A mere slave attacking Einar (royalty) with an hawk in the begining. then feeeding Einars father to the English, while in the process stealing the one girl Einar truly loves away from him. And to top it all off in the end when Einar shows him mercy Eric suckershots him in the gut. Erics an asshole, the wrong guy died.
@CiNeMaN512 Haha!! I totaly agree mate. I love this film but that Eric takes the piss from start to finish. He annoys me through out the film, he never smiles once, even when he escapes and he all loved up with the girl. They have remade loads of shit films but they never remake good ones. I would like to see a remake on this. I know it would'nt be as good as the original, they never are, but it would still be interesting. Also they change things around. Mabey they could change the ending!
@CiNeMaN512 damn right.when i saw this movie the first time in 1986 i was 6 years old back then i thought what a shame einar who was so cool and the better man in this fight lost against a man he was able to kill but he did hestitate because he thought he is my half brother.if i were einar i would have kill eric.
@CiNeMaN512 it would be too morally reprehensible to have your ending kirk douglas doesnt truelly love her because he had a girl in the beggining of the movie at home in norway thats better looking he just wants her cause tony curtis wants her you cant have vikings going around raping women and enslaving men and attacking nations
Always loved this film (and the haunting music) as a kid.. Finally bought it on DVD for about £3 about 10 years ago! I just hope they don't remake it!
They cut off the horns especially for this movie,Kirk said it was extremely painfull having his removed LOL Seriously an epic I saw loads of times when young, the music is inspiring. anyone know how to get the full movie please?
I love this film! Two of the greatest Hollywood stars, superb Jack Cardiff cinematography and shot on location. The sequence with the longboat against the fjords with the slate-grey sky - just beautiful.
este final cuando muere Einar, kirk Douglas ,es muy parecido al de Gladiator, dicen lo mismo ,preparar el funeral para un romano y alzan el cadaver de la misma manera que en esta escena.
JUST ABOUT THE GREATEST ENDING EVER TO A CLASSIC MOVIE. R.I.P TONY. LONG LIVE THE GREAT KIRK DOUGLAS. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHDDDDDDDDDDDDDEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have roots in the Shetlands. There's a festival every year where our respect for our Viking heritage is commemorated by building a longboat and setting it on fire ;)

one of the more stirring final scores! beat only by the closing theme of Excalibur.

@diddymuck Excalibur has Wagner, it is not a fair fight, really! :D Tough this score is still great!

@CiNeMaN512 yeah, i thought the same even when i was a kid.
but kirk douglas the star---him and john wayne couldn't die in a movie.
though douglas and curtis reunited in SPARTICUS, where both got killed.
monk22yrs 4 months ago
@monk22yrs tony curtis was in spartacus because he was the number one box office star of the moment he wasnt that great an actor
spacepatrolman 3 months ago
@spacepatrolman and kirk douglas got kidded over the years of the way he spoke; sctv did a number of immitations.
curtis and douglas re-united for SPARTICUS---cause thats what happened in old hollywood.
douglas and burt lancaster were in a lot of movies together, even spoofing their work in the last movie they made together.
lots of big time actors now days are a lot worse than curtis....at least curtis could do a good cary grant immitation in SOME LIKE IT HOT.

@CiNeMaN512 Eric did all that, then Eric was the real Viking, not Einar.
