There were many efforts to avoid dropping the bomb (the 2nd was dropped when no word from the Emperor was heard), including dropping leaflets on the Japanese people asking their Emperor to get wise. Truman being an artillery captain in the Army may have liked to see that Little Boy used (he was with Stalin in Potsdam when they tested it) but ultimately, it was a no-brainer, at least for Truman, at the time: See Reply to Hippohateszealots.
Also, in the completion of three higher degrees, I know of know instacne of the Japanese asking to surrender. Can you cite a case? If so I need to update my knowledge.
to hippohateszealots, Truman asked for them to surrender over the radio. See Operation Downfall. Insofars as the Russians, Truman realized that we would not maintain a monploy on the "bomb" so I don't buy that point of view. If you examine the fact that the Japanes did not surrender and fought to the death on every island and tht even the civilians did so on Saipan and Okinawa, then it is clear that this affected Trumans decision more than the Russians.
More died in the fire bombings than the nuclear bombs. It was estimated that the invasion of the home islands would have cost 1 million American casualties, so put your self in Truman's shoes. I would not have the bravdo to do such a thing.
@jdpage01 There are those who say that the bomb was dropped to taunt the Russians, showing them the power of American technology. The Japanese would've surrendered in a week or two and a bomb was not needed. Truman ignored requests for surrender so he could use the bomb. And so many other claims.
Looking at the destruction by the firebombings and hopefully the rationale of the leaders in Japan, I think they would've surrendered without an Invasion or bombing.
One snippet I found when researching Truman (written by HST) was that he knew Congress would impeach him if he had such a powerful tool and did not use it.
@255JSMITTY255 Truman was the one who ordered the atomic bombs to be dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki where more than 200,000 civilians died. Obama is a good president, you're just a dumb ass who likes saying random shit to get attention. so sad...

I wrote a play about Harry and one of the things I found was his certainty that had he NOT dropped the bomb(s) he would have been impeached.

Harry Truman deserves the real credit for our success in the Cold War. The "W" goes to the starting pitcher.
The other presidents, however helpful, were the relief pitchers.
