City Year has been around since 1988, and is a nonpartisan education nonprofit that places selected young adults into the nation's lowest performing schools to transform them from drop out factories to success stories. I am a former Marine Corps officer candidate, and I have had military training. I was discharged from my military service due to medical reasons, and I am looking to return once my paperwork clears. I chose City Year because I want to serve, and I know the work is important.

Wow! I am a former corp member from the City Year New York 2010 group. I don't get this at all. I feel every one should give a year to help the youth better themselves in anyway as possible. I know the entire City Year organization is corrupted but guarantee when you completed a full year of service you find a way to help make the organization a success.

I've done City Heroes and City Year for 6 years. Yeah, 6 years, long before Obama was president.

I cleaned up public areas, cleaned graffiti, assisted elderly/mentally ill/homeless/ at risk kids. etc.

I did this all so that I could give back to my community, not a second was spent on anything political.

I keep seeing on here that City Year is "paramilitary." Every definition of paramilitary I can find on the internet implies that to be paramilitary a group must be armed or capable of using arms. We received no weapons or strategy training. Possessing weapons at work or at work events would have gotten us fired. AmeriCorps is NOT paramilitary by definition.

I work for City Year. I tutor kids in literacy and math, run after school homework help, and so many other things. The organization's main goal right now is to combat the nation's drop out crisis. 1 million kids drop out every day.

So, we're just doing our part to keep kids in school - which is exactly what Hitler was doing with his youth corps, right?
