In my opinion, this interpretation is too sluggish and wants punch. It's probably due to the fact that the conductor imparts a sort of neutral tone to it. I've heard the pianist in other pieces and with other orchestras, and she's got tremendous drive and stamina : listen to her playing The Appassionata's third movement, for instance. Pity, this rendering is boring. Sorry not to join in with the almost unanimous chorus of praise.

I´m not sure if it´s just the recording, but the soloist and the orchestra don´t combine well. I think the problem is more the orchestra than Lisitsa though. They don´t play this piece the correct way, In my humble opinion of course. Enjoyable nevertheless, because of her very capable performance.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent with us here on YouTube. Could you please tell me the name of the orchestra and conductor you worked with for this performance?
You are such an amazingly talented beautiful woman! Your interpretation of Beethoven's brilliant works is exactly as I suspect he wanted it played. BRAVO!
i just wish i can have a piano like that.... i've been playing an electronic piano for ten years from the year i started learning piano until now i'm grade 8.. haiz
Watching Val play is like watching ballet with keyboard added...shear beauty to watch and hear! Her fingers (as well as all of her, body and soul) really do dance on the keys!
Last night I listened to Gould's version in entirety and throroughly enjoyed it. I have not listened to all of Ms. Lisitsa's version yet because it is so beautiful I have listened to part I about 5 times at least.
As an extreme music lover it is saying much that Beethoven's Emperor is to me the most beautiful piece of music ever written and therefore it is no idle compliment to Ms. Lisitsa to say your playing is the most moving I have heard. <3
@allthewaythrough Oh my god, you just put my thoughts into words.. That's exactly what I think! All these "smart" people come and tell how Lisitsa plays somehow wrong or how Horowitz (or Argerich, or Rubinstein, or Cziffra etc..) is sooooo much better. BUT I don't really care, because there's only one Lisitsa and she the best.
Dear Dearest Valentina....you are just an amazing Goddess!!!! i swear i am in tears, each time i listen to your uploads...oh my god, its just mind blowing, head spinning, slam dunking, death defying, in all you are just one superb human who should never get aged and stay alive for ever, because you have filled Life into your music & inspite of all these virtues, name ,fame still you are so down to earth...you must be really a god i cry many times in a day DUE TO you. The Greatest Pianist Of Our times Period, I learned this by watching a video of Her Performing The "Hammerklavier Sonata"....... love at first hearing , and now the 5th Piano concerto Performed In Mexico City, Un Abrazo para una gran Pianista!!! God Bless you and thank you, you have achieved what I one day dream of, and Inspiration you have brought with your playing to me as a Musician.
I have been listening that concerto since i was a child because a brother put it on one of those biggest 33 players. Then this is my favorite piano concerto. I'm mexican, and never knew that she was in DF at 2007. So next time she came gonna be in there no matter DF is far from my place. I love this woman, as far as i have read, as many others in all posible ways. She is the BEST.
Valentina, please dont get upset because of one or two idiots, You have thousands and thousands of fans who love your art and are grateful for your genius.
Gould's interpretation is my all-time favourite (for the same reason why most people hate it: his unorthodox phrasing), but this was definitely excellent.
I can't decide which is more fun, to listen to Valentina play or to watch her! What talent! She adds a whole dimension to virtuoso playing. I've heard and watched all her YouTube uploads countless times. Thanks for posting!
I have just finished watching her performance and can understand what "orchestral accompaniment" really means....She totally owned this piece.....truly magnificent!!
