isn't the inside of Rama described as all one greyish colour and made of some kind of metallic material? I cant remember there being any fields or vegetation, apart from the single flower Pak picks up from the southern side of Rama
@monomorph1 also i think you forgot the "ship airlock" (haven't read the other books yet so idk if it really is an airlock for ships) on the inside, i only see the three exits of the small airlocks.
@monomorph1 no because I'm doing a homework project on it right now, and I just reread the chapter where Jimmy was making sure to avoid the "points" of the horns. Other than that, holy crap nerdgasm.
wow just got done with rama 2 a week ago and loved it and i noticed the geometrical shapes in New York arent collored. and also, i had a hard time figuring out the "tunnels" beneath the surface. Perhaps maybe in the future you can make the tunnels. GREAT JOOB!!
Really great. However, I think coriolis (sp?) force should have caused the clouds to form a swirl down the axis of the cylinder. Just a small point. Otherwise TERRIFIC. Thank you.
Congratulations for the video. However, GamingMill is right.
Clarke does not describe the spikes as "horns". Here are some excerpt from the book, you will see that they are clearly described as "tapering needles". See for yourself !
'What can you see?' Hub Control asked anxiously.
'Just Big Horn - it's absolutely smooth - no markings - and the point's so sharp you could use it as a needle. I'm almost scared to go near it.'

.... and in another chapter of the book, the biggest needle is "8 kilometers long", namely something like 6 miles. I think you designed them too short.
@monomorph1 the book makes it clear that the spikes are sharp and pointy. The narrator mentions Pak is afraid the tip of the horn might puncture the membrane in the skybike.
You certainly couldn't fabricate something this massive and heavy and then launch it off a 1g planet!
There is probably enough iron-ore and other minerals on the asteroids and minor planets for some future generation to constuct something like this in thier existing Solar orbit tho.....
this vessel and all the little things in it are fascinating, i just read the great first book, and i waded through the shitstorm sequel books just to find out more about it. Those sequels really make me want to punch Gentry Lee in the dick, even with Clarke's input he is a worthless hack writer i hate him so much now.
wow, this really helped me visualize rama. I had trouble grasping the bit about the vertigo of climbing the ladder to the airlock but now i can totally understand, thank you.
Sadly the project is now officially dead, and probably will be for some time until it gets picked up again. Its been in this cycle for 9 years now, it will take dedication to get it back to normal.
Only just read this and have tried to visualise the interior. This is a very good representation. I have also viewed another model which includes earth-based ladnscapes for the north and south plains which is also good but does not match the description in the book as acurately as this does. However, both are extremely impressive.
Imagine a craft that was 31 miles long and 12 miles in diameter...Who's to say that craft like this do not exist somewhere..Space is big....there are other civilizations out there...
You should pick up the game made by Sierra Entertainment about the book RAMA II. It is stunning. Really helps with the visualizations, and the music is amazing!

@scott93257 You should really convert yourself to metric when talking sci-fi.

Cool, this is a lot like how I imagined it while reading the book give or take a few details.

well if you've read all the books u realize at the end that all the nodes and ramas were created by "god" as an experiment.

Only problem I have with this video is that in the book the 'spikes' opposite to the entrance are exactly that: sharp spikes. Otherwise, great video.
GamingMill 1 year ago
@GamingMill Actually the books describe them as horn-like not as just spikes. Which is why I made them look like this.

@monomorph1 Ah, right - I've not read it for ages so you'll have to forgive me!

And again :
.../...
'Jimmy, this is the Captain. I've got second thoughts on that. Judging by your pictures, the smaller spikes are just the same as the big one.
.../...
He was now gaining altitude, climbing back towards the central spike; Big Horn's tapering needle still stretched for a kilometre ahead of him
.../...
What was happening back there could take place on an even larger scale near the tapering spike of Big Horn.

But otherwise, great !

@monomorph1 But it did say they came to geometrically perfect points that you could use to thread a needle.
