The pacing back and forth is actually written into the play.
"(It is at this point that Jerry may begin to move about the stage with slowly increasing determination and authority, but pacing himself, so that the long speech about the dog comes at the high point of the arc)"
@Mychro16 It is written in but execution is the key. Pacing is important but maybe not as much would've served better. Slow at first then faster is probably the best way to go. Not sure I did a great job in doing that but I so loved playing this role. Was just happy I didn't butcher it ;-)
This is a great, very engaging performance. Do you by any chance have the entire show?
I'm a high schooler performing the Zoo Story as a one-act, show's about a month away, and I'm trying to grasp the character of Jerry to the best of my ability.
@theRealbrando2393 Sorry it took me so long to read your comment. I do have the whole play, but I assume you have either already performed it already or are about to...I really hope it goes well..this has always been my favorite play
i had to perform as jerry in an edited version of this play. excellent job! this speech isn't easy, and i think that your actions and pacing go very well with what albee wrote into the script for blocking.
You know, I always look back and think...oh crap I should've done this or I should've done that...and with time and reflection probably could've nailed it much better than I did. But it is always great to hear good things. The play is so complex so there will always be some who look at it as good or bad...that is w=one of the reasons I think this play is so great. Because the interpretation can be so varied and never really wrong
I agree with you about the difficulty of that role. I often told him that he had the tougher job in this play because he had to remain engaged, responsive and in character without drawing too much attention but allowing for the audience to be guided by his mannerisms and movements and emotion without speaking. I had the easy part, his had to be subtle but effective, not easy at all
Agreed. However, we were conveying that he had an idea of what he wanted to do but was gathering courage to do so. It may have not played as to what we intended but it is about what you got out of it

pacing back and forth in front of the bench over and over does not register energy, it telegraphs you don't know what to do
