The song title -IGY- refers to the International Geophysical Year, 1957-58.
Even in the 80's, people were looking back to an earlier time when things were "better".
Today US politics are more corrupt than they've ever been in my lifetime, but **not** more corrupt than they've ever been. But don't whine, roll up your sleeves & get to work making it better. It will take your whole life to get it done, so better start now.
The thing is - life is what we make it. I've loved this song since the first day I heard it but it is not without irony. We all want a better life and we can have it TO THE DEGREE THAT WE BELIEVE IT. Every line is a winner in this song. If you love it as I do, embrace it and live it - no excuses! IGY - a just machine to make big decisions, 90 minutes from New York to Paris, where by 76 we'll be aok. Make this song your mantra. Spring is coming, whistle the into in public. Lets start a movement!
@steelyjackson I'm on board with that, where do I sign up? I'm tired of short sighted politicians that keep us from reaching our human potentials. We need to re-program our society with compassion and vision.
I love the satire in this song...it's precisely what people in the 1950's would have envisioned the future to look like. I especially love the line "we'll be a-ok by 76'" given that back then they didn't even remotely envision the energy crisis or the Vietnam War. God knows I wish it would have turned out that way.
The first time I heard this record was in the early 80's when it came out. I was in the library and listened to it on vinyl. Loved it ever since. IGY, the year I was born, perfect.
ICYDNK, IGY stands for International Geophysical year. It lasted from 1957 to 1958 (about a year and a half). Many important scientific breakthroughs were made. It would lead to more activity in outer space exploration. + This definitely sounds like Steely Dan.
this key phrase is could be. unfortunately, there will be no heaven on earth. It's a beautifull premise and truly brings tears to my eyes because i've seen a lot of mess in my life. Sadly, man will not allow nirvana to exist. that being said, this is a beautifull song.
Although we don't have the threat of nuclear war, we have different threats. Cimate change, terrorism, global overpopulation, etc. etc. This song still make me wish for a nirvana, just for a moment!
@zigzag909 In 1982 we lived under constant threat of nuclear war. We were facing higher unemployment than we are now. We had no cell phones, no internet, no computer capable of reproducing this youtube video. If you think1982 was a better year than 2012, you need to re-evaluate your perspective. maybe it's not the world that is fucked up.
I have been in a state of grace, hearing to this song in the early 80's when I was living in Brittany on the west coast of France. Everything is true, but I did'nt understood the lyrics at the time. I am hopeful that we will all be surprised what might be right around the corner not only musically but artistically in general. However, I am an inherently optimistic and have unending faith in the human race.
Great 80s tune. Sad to think that artist of this gen cannot even began to produce good music like this. They have better technology and techniques but the music is getting worse. I guess the future isn't so bright musically wise at least. Makes me sad. Well thank goodness for the past.
Eternally Free and Eternally Young...May I wish these to all of you who feel this song as I do. Peace. ps can someone please tell me what I.G.Y stands for.
@JIHADSHADEE International Geophysical Year. Look it up on Wikipedia and you will see why the song is so poignant. Lots of hopes and dreams that did not come to pass.
You got that right bro, Dan still makes me and mine certain it's not about us, the MAN has given a sense of surrender. I'm an EE in Colorado...just got laid-off AGAIN! Wife, Labrador and a kitty, I'm 61 with a 31frame of mind. You are right, the future is to stop the treadmill! I'm there, mov'in back to sea-level, I want to die listening to the waves, and Donald Fagen. Glad to know I'm not alone.
Donald Fagan - in the car of exceptional Musicians/Song Writers of the Twentieth Century.
Steely Dan is among the group of Musical Artists whose music is so consistently good, as well as appealing to the society; across the broad spectrum, that their popularity has endured through time since they offered up their first album in 1972, "Can't Buy A Thrill.
Great albums: "Katy Lied"; "Countdown To Ecstasy"; "The Royal Scam"; "Aja"; "Gaucho";
OK Mikegeddykelly. Uncle Gary gets alot of attention but I will tell him how great his work has been to others. Currently he is in Woodstock visiting but I hope to see him in L.A. for Pesach. Take Care!
@TheDeviousMuzik, @countrysongdemos fully agree and same here. SD was also part of the early 80s for me...such positive sounds of SD. I remember taking a walk with my friend up and down my street, with my friend listening to Babylon Sisters on her then new Walkman, 1 earpiece each! Magical, funky, fresh! Those were the days, without this, youtube, internet, cell phones...I think we were freer back then than now...thanks Donald! Such a powerful song, full of hope. Never forgotten!
I first heard this song in the Simpsons when they had an episode in the future and you see homer and bart with lisa's fiances flying in their floating car to this song through the neighborhood of the future. Now that I finally figured this song out I actually get it. It's brilliant because it's a song from when I was born talking about the future we're currently living right about now. It's so beautiful and so right on.
I can never decide whether Fagan is being serious or completely sarcastic with the optimistic nature of this song. His lyrics are always so cynical and irreverent, so it's bizarre to hear him sing a song like this that is so positive and utopian-sounding. Does he really stand behind the sentiment put forth here, or is he somehow slyly mocking it?
@goldsmice He's mocking it, all right. The title is the clue. IGY (International Geophysical Year) was 1959. Don would have been about 12 at the time. So here we have the imaginations of a 12-year-old genius, described by a 40(?)-year old who knows darn well none of this stuff, except spandex, has come true. Ironic as always.
@art4life4me IGY 1957-59. All of the worlds major countries cooperated in Geophysical experiments. The only countries to not participate were Taiwan and China. The point is that when people work together, advancement is possible. This is also what Gene Roddenberry was touching on in Star Trek. As the story line shows, humans only advanced scientifically when they overcame greed and politics and worked for eachothers mutual benefit.
@goldsmice I wouldn't say mocking, exactly. In the liner notes to the album, Fagen says the songs are about the imaginations of a young boy at that time (late 50's). When you are young you are full of hope for the future. I wasn't yet born, but the late 50's had a lot of excitement about space and the betterment of the world through technology, etc. Of course, the optimism doesn't always gel with the eventual reality. "New Frontier" is about bomb shelters, though also lighthearted.
mmm... What a great horn part... And I second the comment below about The Nightfly being something unique, although it does flow pretty seamlessly out of Gaucho... Less rock than Steely Dan, and maybe less dark and apocalyptic, but similar themes about utopia, especially this song.
The Nightfly wasn't just another solo album by someone in a well known band, sounding a-bit-like-but-not-quite-as-good-as that band. Nightfly was ... something onto itself. Listening to this or the other songs you can instantly hear that there's something there that hadn't been done before.
Don't be embarassed - there's no shame in it - but click the thumbs up button if you found this video because you heard this song on an elevator or in a department store
I've always been curious about how Americans would respond to this song. Christians believe that it is for them but then they always believe that. IGY represents the International Geophysical Year. Buckminster Fuller, you crazy clowns.
In my opinion, the main refrain lyrics can easily be used to describe heaven under God's eternal dominion. I can't help but think that part is 100% true. No disrespect to people of other major religions, but this is what I truly wish to believe. (8^)
@killfoo HAHAHAHAHAHA HILARIOUS! I seriously feel the pain. I've listened to this classic in every format BUT vinyl ! I scour Salvation Army's and Goodwills for diamonds like these! "We'll be clean when their work is done, we'll be eternally free, we'll be eternally young, ooohhhhh..............
pure genius moment: the background vocal starting at around 3:40 - the "everywheeerrrre" being held across the next few chords and working perfectly with them.. a harmonic god.
On a slow crime day, I see Batman, Robin, CatGirl, & CatWoman, hanging outside the BatCave, having a nice picnic on a nice sunny day, and dancing happily to this song.
@PastorChipN Thanks. The Mind's Eye Movie occurred to me a couple of days ago, the same day when I read about that Russian commercial airplane that crash landed, upside down, and yet ALL 100 PEOPLE ON BOARD SURVIVED.
I was so happy to hear that everybody survived with not too many injured, and then... immediately, that happy picnic thought occurred to me.
Also, click and listen to Howard Jones' version of the same song. It is also Beautiful.
I never knew he recorded under his name..wow I loved Steely Dan but the comments are right on it is what the perspective of age can do.Amazing how in spite of ourselves we do grow up to some extent/
@kevycanavan Steely Damn, great remark! I agree. The Nightfly is still a fantastic album for grown ups who want some jazz/funk/rock in their playlists!
Wow, I was listening to this song when it first came out, I was a young teenager, strollin' in downtown LA, this was my life's soundtrack. What an exceptional song writer Don Fagen was... this song was a collage of my 1983 - I remember riding my BMX through LA , also heard this song playing in 84 and 85. I miss those days, soooo much.
@TheDeviousMuzik Ain't that the truth. The early 80s were magical and had magical music. Listen to the lyrics. "The future looks bright.... what a beautiful world this will be... what a glorious time to be free..." Compare that to the lyrics today about capping people and bitches and ho's. I miss those days, too.
@countrysongdemos Well said dear person. I too miss those days. Today's music makes me run for cover and immerse myself in more of music from yesteryear. I find comfort in it.
@countrysongdemos I see your point, but I believe this song is about the naïveté of the fifties/sixties era. People had a crazy, over-optimistic view of the future.
Yeah, also remember that song "the future's so bright I gotta wear shades?" We were an optimistic bunch. :) I loved this album in my old CRX, in cassette format. ;)
@countrysongdemos I think Fagen is using something called 'irony' here. Don't know if you yankees are familiar with that concept, but look it up, it might expand your mind. :D
@Crlmrtn I know, but It's just such a happy sounding song, I want to delude myself into taking it literally. Just like Bennie and the Jets were not a real band, but we like singing along anyway. I know what irony is. I used to teach English ("us Yankees"? Are you British?)
I miss the 80's too. Such a sense of promise and hope and glory and all that. "Buy your ticket..." not so true now. When did we lose that? I try to pass some optimism on to my students (college) but it's hard. What can I do???? Plus, I'm being monitored by the internet for posting too many comments tonight. Hey Fagen -- keep the faith.
@TheDeviousMuzik Don Fagen is still an musical pioneer. I remember Uncle Gary always bragging about Steely Dan. Everything Must Go Album is great. Yes, Uncle Gary is Gary Katz. This one is out to New York!
@brian1heart1 If your serious about Gary being your uncle, it would be an honor and pleasure tome if you could please tell him (yet again I'm sure) "incredible work" and Thank You"
This just brought me down from what I was into --Elvis treat me nice --than I came around ,like a roast in a oven the older mind takes alittle time to remember that it is now ....
Man I heard this song back in 1983 as a sophmore in high school, loved it then love it now. I didn't hear it again til the 90's! Thanks for uploading it!
This track is simply flawless... i can't describe it any other way . Damn i love this song - it fixes anything, makes me think of sunshine and makes me wanna spark up a fatty 8]
@TheRobinisnightwing i am so new to sharing , i love this song too, but steely dan and donald fagen are all that and it for me ! i have not had the oportunity to listen to my choice of music for a long while so this is like being a kid in a candy store for me.
"Trust machines to make big decisions..... programmed by men of compassion and vision. " very funny stuff. If you don't realize A. he's being ironic, and B. this has already come to pass - and has led us into disaster - you're not paying close enough attention.
This song is a mild satire on the dreams of the 1950's when everyone was "blinded by science" and what it seemed to promise for the future. Tom Swift and his atomic car, etc. Beautiful piece of music.
This was a bit of a chase. I've loved this song for decades. I'm just learning the name of the song. I was listening to Steely Dan yesterday so that must been why I was thinking of this song. Great memories. They were right. In a generation you maybe African, European, Asian, Latino, etc but eventually we'll just be the American race. Not a melting but more of a gumbo. Delicious, filling, and nutritious. A little of this and a little of that. Makes for good eating. Just pray we can get there!
I love the sheer optimism of this song as Fagen is not one to gush it in his music. Yes, it's somewhat a false optimism as much of the "future" of this song has yet to happen and probably never will. However, one cannot deny that this song tells of a future we WISH could happen. Maybe one day... :)
o mankind! we created you from a single pair. of a male and a female
and made you into nations and tribes, that ye my know each other, not that
ye may despise each other. verily the most honoured of you in the sight of God
is he who is the most righteous of you. and God has full knowledge and is
well acquainted with all things. qur'an 49:13 let us reflect the spirit of this verse
and this song brothers and sisters. we are one. taking care of our planet is our only true religion. salaam.

Donald Fagen's Nightfly is the best Steely Dan album, and it's not even a Steely Dan album. It's more like Steely Damn.
kevycanavan 2 months ago 4
@kevycanavan Steely Damn, great remark! I agree. The Nightfly is still a fantastic album for grown ups who want some jazz/funk/rock in their playlists!

This song is the antithesis of their other song "Everything Must Go", ironic and almost prophetic.

The only song ever in our literature to express a really high tech vision of our future. All mentioned is posible, IMHO. And what are we waiting for?

Wow, I was listening to this song when it first came out, I was a young teenager, strollin' in downtown LA, this was my life's soundtrack. What an exceptional song writer Don Fagen was... this song was a collage of my 1983 - I remember riding my BMX through LA , also heard this song playing in 84 and 85. I miss those days, soooo much.
TheDeviousMuzik 3 months ago 17
@TheDeviousMuzik Ain't that the truth. The early 80s were magical and had magical music. Listen to the lyrics. "The future looks bright.... what a beautiful world this will be... what a glorious time to be free..." Compare that to the lyrics today about capping people and bitches and ho's. I miss those days, too.
countrysongdemos 1 month ago 19
@countrysongdemos Well said dear person. I too miss those days. Today's music makes me run for cover and immerse myself in more of music from yesteryear. I find comfort in it.
rootietootoo 1 month ago
@countrysongdemos I see your point, but I believe this song is about the naïveté of the fifties/sixties era. People had a crazy, over-optimistic view of the future.

@countrysongdemos
Yeah, also remember that song "the future's so bright I gotta wear shades?" We were an optimistic bunch. :) I loved this album in my old CRX, in cassette format. ;)
This brings it all back.
Unstupid1 3 weeks ago
@countrysongdemos Fagen didn't mean what you thought he meant. Still better than today's emo/gangster wannabes, regardless.
sunzoo1 2 weeks ago
@countrysongdemos I think Fagen is using something called 'irony' here. Don't know if you yankees are familiar with that concept, but look it up, it might expand your mind. :D
Crlmrtn 1 week ago
@Crlmrtn I know, but It's just such a happy sounding song, I want to delude myself into taking it literally. Just like Bennie and the Jets were not a real band, but we like singing along anyway. I know what irony is. I used to teach English ("us Yankees"? Are you British?)
countrysongdemos 1 week ago
I miss the 80's too. Such a sense of promise and hope and glory and all that. "Buy your ticket..." not so true now. When did we lose that? I try to pass some optimism on to my students (college) but it's hard. What can I do???? Plus, I'm being monitored by the internet for posting too many comments tonight. Hey Fagen -- keep the faith.

@countrysongdemos of course, all 80's music did was sing about drugs...nothing like music of today

This 80's pop gem is nearly three decades old, an it hasn't lost any of its luster, timeless music from Donald Fagen...

MsTracie 6 months ago 3
I love the sheer optimism of this song as Fagen is not one to gush it in his music. Yes, it's somewhat a false optimism as much of the "future" of this song has yet to happen and probably never will. However, one cannot deny that this song tells of a future we WISH could happen. Maybe one day... :)
