They could potentially put Khan in the new Star Trek. Rather than the "Eugenics Wars", make Khan responsible for the Third World War (mentioned in "Star Trek: First Contact") that devastated the Earth before First Contact with the Vulcans.
Star Trek II was certainly an Epic star trek movie. But I'd hardly call the motion picture a flop. I enjoyed the first one almost as much as any other. Quite frankly, I think Nemesis or Insurrection were more of flops than the motion picture. More like long TNG episodes... THough I enjoyed them too.
This musical composition is one of the more amazing works I've EVER heard :D
this guy was truly a genius, goldsmiths' have better melodies, but the way this one has a varying rhythm and how it plays with the main theme just show that Horner is just more of a musical genius.
@dude75able While I agree TNG expanded the franchise, you have to remember that ST was a dieing franchise with the flop of The Motion Picture. If it wasn't for the success of ST2 TWOK, there wouldn't have been anything further. This film was without a doubt the rebirth of Star Trek as we know it.
this music....i think its the best opening music of all trek movies, except XI when they had "Enterprising Young Men." That one was sweet, and just barely beat this for me.
Someone told me that the theme was trying to give you the sense of the unknown and trying to make space seem like this ocean voyage with how it ebbed and flowed.
This movie, made for a fraction of the cost of its predecessor, managed to look, sound, and feel more epic, grand, and intimate than The Motion Picture. The Wrath of Khan is still the absolute best of the series, followed closely by The Voyage Home, and then the new Star Trek.
I think what does it for me, re: this theme, is that there's something epically nautical about it. You can almost see the old ship, wind filling the sails, as it sets off for a voyage of adventure.
Instead of having Khan in Star Trek 2 (2011) they should have Kirk face the Cardassians or maybe the Ferengi (I know they weren't "discovered" till TNG) hell even the Xindi would work. Have the Klingons make a small minor appearance in it.
Beautiful incorporation of the Original Series' theme song. God, I love the score for this movie. It just fills me with excitement and awe of the great unknown, the final frontier -- space.
Well, if there is mentioned to marry with this score, i would like to tell that this song is very simmiliar to what feelings i got when i meet with my truly loved girlfriend.
I know this is an action/sci-fi score, but its still awake feelings like when there is suddenly appear my love. Funny.
Oh, and to comment directly this score, it's awesome. If i ever going to marry with my gf, this song will surely used.
I just rewtched this and the new Trek, and this is still the best film in the series. More depth of characters, a more compelling villain, battles where tension and cunning played a great part. It's a great movie, let alone a great sci-fi movie.
@Defenstrator I feel the same way, while the new film was great fun and I loved their casting choices, ST:WoK was simply one of the most evocative, moving, dramatic sci-fi movies ever made. I think the original cast hit their strongest performances in it, especially Shatner and Nimoy.
This is THE BEST Star Trek theme ever, beating out even the original series. It embodies the excitement, wonder, and eventually the sadness and grief of this movie.
They won't simply remake it; they will explore similar thematic concerns within a parallell narrative structure - a re-imagining, if you will; honoring the original while simultaneously ... no, I'm sorry, I can't go on: the bullshit, the bullshit is everywhere...
This sounds like the Erich Kunzel & The Cincinnati Pops performance which features on their "Star Tracks II" album. It certainly isn't the recording used for the film and OST.
You're right about the subtle differences on soundtrack versions. However the film/soundtrack version of the main title for this film are exactly the same and this version isn't either one of them.
Agree 100%, The score is emotionally and awe-inspiring wonderful. I've never come across another score that complemented and reflected the growth of story and character emotion like Horner's.
Horner's music was a character in this movie. Even in the Mutura Nebula battle, his music was so good, so apt, that when you watch the movie, the music isn't there. It blends in with what is spilling onto the screen; it is supposed to be there. It is a natural part of the film itself. Innate. Now, that is some serious, bad-ass scoring, if you ask me. (And his best, regardless if he thinks he's outgrown Star Trek or not.)
All of the music from the all of the trek movies are great. Cept for that crap from the new movie, there is only one good piece of music from the entire thing that even remotely sounds like it belongs in the league of horner or goldsmith.
who can forget the animaniacs ultimate line "His amazing fake plastic chest" I get the feeling he laughed at that line. One of the best villains in SF history played to a T by Mr Montalban.
I strongly prefer the Motion Picture theme as done by Jerry Goldsmith. Sorry to disappoint you. To me, it works even better due to the rousing introduction... very much like a fanfare done by John Williams as a prelude to the main theme of Star Wars.
Also, it was just a bad movie in its own right. Aside from the lame writing (CARRBON UNITZ), it dragged on for far too long and had some really disappointing special effects (from the guy who did 2001 and Blade Runner, no less!). Also, it's probably the brownest sci-fi movie that I've seen since The Black Hole (which was released in the same year, by the way). And why did they replace the bright uniforms from the series with those awful Space: 1999-style gray pajamas?
@Stopmotionist Heh, yeah, that too. But you can credit STI as being responsible for the great uniforms in STII and beyond, and for STII's greatness in and of itself. They really overhauled it for STII as a result of STI's blandness. Those boring uniforms paved the way for those sharp, squared away, genuine military looking uniforms in STII. If STI had been just O.K., then things may have turned out poorly in the long run, if that makes sense.
The best of the entire trilogy hands down Kaaaaahn!!!!
