@MattHatter The Smile Sessions will be available as a standard double CD or download and as an elaborate deluxe box set which will include four CDs, two vinyl LPs, two vinyl singles and a 60-page hardbound book written by Beach Boys historian Domenic Priore. (according to "Direct Current" 'Know Better Music' Aug. 9, 2011).
all these oddball single tracks disappeared for years until the remastered CDs came out. they really tried to push breakaway into a hit but it didn't happen. too bad, good song (strange that it isn't on 20/20). the wilsons' father murry wrote the words under a fake name. as much as i love the boys, they do look a little out of step here.
I used to think it was just because of Brian's connection to Capitol Records that they got famous. But I still like their music now. So it must have been their talent that made them a success and got them so many hits.
Maybe it's just me but the whole "lets hate on Mike" game has gotten old fast...yes he did some douchey things but not out of hate or jealousy..he actually sang very well on a lot of their best songs and wrote nice words too. If you're dissing him you're really dissing the whole band too in a way
@whatwouldbrianwilson He's not exactly useless during this period, listen to All I Want To Do on 20/20. I do think he couldve at least tried to play an instrument though..
Ha ha ha!! I thought just the same! (see an alternative video for this song here, Mike does the same there) They should have given him maracas or tambourine to do some more serious work :P At least he doesn't look like a Karl Marx wannabe here!
Love Carl and Bruce!
(I'm not really a Mike hater, but I do enjoy making fun of him)
Mike actually has a big role in the song but you can barely here it because it's almost all bass. Check out youtube for "breakaway acapella" and you will see what I mean.
Sorry, but this is not completely lipsynched. They are simply singing along with the recording, which was a common practice in those afternoon talk shows. Mostly the record track is what we hear here ( you'r right), but you can also hear notes sung that are not in sync with the recording. I know this recording inside out, and this is partially live. It is what it is. Not completely live, but not completely lip synced either
See Mike Douglas was predicting the future as they did eventually show up as bonus tracks on the CD reissue. Forget Nostradamus when there's Mike Douglas!!!
bruce actually did grow a beard durning the smile era but he shaved it rather quickly and theres only like one pic with him its a tiny one not like the mega wilson beards or mikes homeless look
Wow, You guys truly were an amazing group. A group that stood the test of time and still to this day is recognized as one of the greatest acts to grace the world.
I really wish I could have seen you when you toured with Roy Orbison back in 1964 in Australia. Roy Orbison and the Beach Boys were my all time favorite acts.
Roy Orbison and the Beach Boys = American Legends.
This was aired one month and 4 days before Charlie Manson sent his goons tokill everyone at Melcher's old house. Manson was pissed that on this album they used one of his songs"Cease to Exist" which they changed to "Never Learn Not to Love" Terry Melcher was introduced to Manson thru Dennis Wilson--he was a music producer--who showed an initial interest in manson's tunes but never promised to record him. I heard Charlie watched this at Spahn Ranch and was murderously mad.
check out my surf's up attempt at youtube . com/watch?v=vSoI-L5CuQo you'll just have to mess around with the spaces after you paste it into the address bar
That really was nice, a really intelligent, thoughtful interview with the group. Hearing of their experiences overseas, and getting into the details of them. It reminded me of the intelligence of, say, an interview that Charlie Rose would do today. Nice insights on ideas not usually discussed in interviews. And the group certainly were up for insightful and thoughtful conversation. Thank you for posting it.
The BBs, by this time, were bigger abroad than they were in the US; Carl's, Bruce's, and Dennis' writing and producing flourished on their albums from 68 to 71. It wasn't all Capitol Records' fault because the scene was acid/psychedelic rock, and the BBs were a singles band. Notice that on this clip they're singing live to the original backing track, and that the band are standing unusually close to one another, to block a view of Dennis, who was undoubtedly the worst drum-syncher in history.
He was actually responsible for the guitar sound on their early stuff. He did play an important role in the beginning. They wouldn't have sounded the same without his input on the early records.
Brian gets all the credit for being a "genius" and all that.... but actually, Carl was the guy who kept the act going for 30 years after Brian stopped touring (I was at one of his first no-shows: 4th of July 1965 at the Cow Palace in San Francisco). Brian was their producer/songwriter up until about 1970... Well, who wrote all the hits they had after that?
Would Brian's work still have shined the way it did if Carl hadn't kept pushing it out there for all those years after?
Would Carl have had a job for 30 years if he/they hadn't had those hits to sing? Let's be reasonable here... I love Carl's voice, and I love the records they made from '68-71... but the majority of their following is the result of what happened in the "classic era".
Would Brian even been able to do what he did if not for easy access to the talent in their group?
My point is that he wasn't the only great thing about the band. I heard Carl play when he was way WAY young... like 1964... he was what? 13?... playing licks done on the singles by players like Barney Kessel and Glen Campbell pretty flawlessly and doing Brian's singing parts many times. The Beach Boys had an incredible amount of talent... not just Brian, but all of them.
i agree with you. but... by 64 carl had been in the band for 2.5 years... he was 18 in 64... its testament to brian's Genius that he outshines all of these other amazing musicians... and he remains an enigma that is nearly impossible to fathom... they were all very lucky and hardworking as well as talented. Brian is still the MAN!
Yeah, what was up with his having a beard for the last 25 years of his life? I look at this young guy and although the voice is the same, he looks totally different from the Carl I remember.
Manson undoubtedly and sadly did influence the Beach Boys... they used one of his songs, then Dennis and Probably Brian as well both had problems because of what Manson did... Just as Manson "influenced" Terry Melcher to go into hiding, hire a bodyguard and be forced to seek psychiatric help to cope with the fear...
Manson is a sad con man but its a sad statement that alot of people in society believe charles manson is a "wise man" or someone to look up to...
Brian had problems way before Manson. i think Manson was mainly just buddies with Dennis. i don't recall ever reading anything about brian or the others knowing manson. and this was a Brian song anyway.
the coolest "dorks" in the world. They had no pretentions, like, well every other band in history past and present. And the music is SO high quality. They all wrote and contributed to what is The Beach Boys. Love them. Thanks for the clip. I tear up sometimes listening to them, they so special to music history, and half of them are gone.
Actually mkqp, Carl's lead vocal here is live. The main evidence is that he sings the "that very same love" part. Brain sings it in the recorded version.
Great video - one of the best Beach Boys interviews ever! Very 'austere' set, but nice, albeit mimed, performance from the Boys, who look like they are really having fun.
Any day we can see Carl's beautiful face and hear his sweet music is a good one.....

Is it any wonder why he wanted to destroy the band's creative urges and make them a nostalgia act so he could sing fun, fun, fun instead?
Pathetic.
