  • Where have all the meths drinkers gone these days?

  • Aye they were the good old days. You never see people fighting over meths anymore. It's health and safety gone mad.

  • that bloke at 2:15 looks like Tom Selleck off of Magnum PI. I wondered what he had got up to.

  • Believe me, NOBODY lied more than Blair and Brown (throw Mandelson in too and you've got a Premiership team of liars) - NuLabour made a fine art of it.

  • @Yalwen Then you have a very rose-tinted view of British political history; politicians of every stripe have always lied through their teeth, and satirists from Pope to the present have made a living on the back of such duplicity. Why not take the time to familiarise yourself with the story of the Zinoviev Letter as just one relatively recent example of how low politicians will stoop?

We don't live in a world of less integrity; we just have more transparency.

  • These changes were the idea of a small group of, mainly left-wing, architects and social planners, who wanted to deliberately wipe away all trace of the built past, as part of their rejection of tradition and history and patriotism. The same mentality is at work today under New Labour - goes by the name of the Pathfinder housing project.

  • I think Churchill and MacMillan lied a bit more than Blair and Brown ;-)

  • @matthias242 How can anyone lie more than Blair?!!!!

  • you dont see proper wino.s drinking white spirit anymore

  • 5:16 "...but happily all this seems to be changing and these kids are finally being given a decent break"... Cue council estate.

    Poor l'il buggers!

  • @djbethell

good point, but let's be fair: at the time council estates must have seemed like total heaven to the kids compared to some of the accomodation. I can't remember it but my dad can and he told me it was friggin dreadful (community spirit notwithstanding)!!

  • That's the trouble with youtube..a little prat like you can throw an insult at someone and get away with it. Lets meet up, and see if you want to hurl abuse then....

  • Is it possible for you to actually explain WHY you think priapus56 talks shit? Just throwing personal insults is not enough - can't you understand? You seem to be exactly the type of person produced by modern society - verbally-challenged and crude. You show the truth in priapus56's assessment. I await your ignorant chavish reply.

  • Quality of life is so much more than material wealth and comfort. We may be materially richer now but we have lost so much along the way. It kinda looks better and more innocent and genteel back then.

  • It WAS more innocent and genteel. (I was there). Our times can no longer be innocent, but could be more genteel. Material wealth, comfort, a huge slice of left-wing stupidity and arrogance and right-wing greed has churned out generations of spoilt brats with no manners and very little depth of character. I'm not knocking the young only..My comment applies to many of my generation and older. I see Churchill and MacMillan as gentlemen; Blair and Brown as a couple of lying arseholes.

  • I agree with every thing you say.

  • yep your so right its a terrible shame how our once great city has been destoryed and our culture ruined the far left have competely ingored the ppl and have changed the face of london forever it will never go back too how it used too be i mean an Englishman walking the streets of london cant help but ask himself if he really is in his own country anymore blair and brown are traitors

  • @charlieiscool1000 I'll be more inclined to listen to your observations about the destruction of English culture once you've actually got to grips with the language. If you care so much for your country and it's traditions why is your grasp of your own language so much worse than that of the Indians and continental Europeans I do business with?

English is now the international language of business, principally because of the economic power of our American cousins, and the people who seem to

  • @charlieiscool1000 (cont) the least regard for it are the people who are native to the United Kingdom.

  • @priapus56 No gentleman would refer to himself as "priapus", nor to others as "arseholes"; certainly not in public.

This film was made in 1967, and it beggers belief that any sentient being could refer to that world as "innocent", just 22 years after the holocaust. Human nature remains sadly constant, and for every self-serving Blair and Brown of today, the 1960's and 1970's had a correspondent Profumo, Boothby, Thorpe or Goodman, and any number of complicit press barons to shield them.

  • @pronatorgator .. Ordinary people were certainly more innocent. What would you know? You weren't there. I was. And on another matter, I made no pretension to being a gentleman so your first sentence is besides the point. If you wish to insult me in any way, perhaps we should meet up so you can do it in person....

  • @priapus56 Are you sure you're not confusing innocence with ignorance?

Blair, Brown, and the politicians of all parties that were caught with their finger in the till during the last government were effectively hoist on their own petard, and were inadvertently exposed by measures taken by themselves to make government more transparent. Corrupt politicians were protected until well after their death by their Fleet Street friends until well after their death during the "better time" you speak of.

  • @pronatorgator Look..I think it stands to reason that people raised on the Bible and the novels of Charles Dickens and whose heroes were Churchill, Montgomery and Nelson, might well have a different attitude to life than those who have been raised on Big Brother, Jerry Springer etc..and whose heroes are Simon Cowell (definitely qualifies as an arsehole), and Jonathan Ross.....

  • @priapus56 That's right. If Victorian England was so elevated by these great literary works why was it that their moral import didn't generate enough escape velocity to free it from child prostitution, infant labour, illiteracy, slum housing, gin addiction, an exponential increase in the asylum population caused by urbanisation, two cholera epidemics, and crime figures that makes 21st century Britain look positively idyllic? Not much innocence for the ordinary man there, eh?

  • @pronatorgator Those works certainly were agents of change but why should we be surprized that such changes took 150 odd years to come to pass? I'm signing off from this discussion now, firstly because it is beginning to bore me; I can assure you that at 53, I have spent many years discussing the questions you have raised; but secondly because here is not the place for complex aguments..why do you think they limit the number of characters you can use?

  • @priapus56 You might want to go back to a time when people knew less about the world, but I'd prefer to live in a time when papers like The Telegraph can expose the greed of politicians using the freedoms granted to them by the same people. Knowledge - not ignorance - is power, and the more people know about the venality of their leaders, the fewer abuses of power they will be. Freedom hurts. Would you go back to the age of the rotten borough just to protect the virtue of the "ordinary" man?

  • This was my comment of the week. Made me chuckle involuntarily every time I thought of it. Ta' Guv'nor.

  • 'Paulie' from The Sopranos at 1.51

  • i live in hertfordshire and i took my bike to london just to ride to cardinal cap alley, the door to wrens old house is still red and the alley has a gate on it the little plaque to the left of the front door is there still and looks original and still readable. dead outside the house you will find thousands of tourists walking by on the embankment. crazy how things were. .......i wish i was there now (1968)

  • James Mason added so much to this sad docu...

  • I wish I could go back in time.

  • fascinating.

  • id love to see more of this film

    can anyone help

  • This film is now available on DVD at Amazon UK. Packed with "Les Bicycette de Belsize.

  • Order it from the BFI...it's now available with additional film included.

  • Search on ebay I bought a DVD copy of the whole film for a few quid

  • London is still full of down and outs. London Bridge and surrounding roads have loads of down and outs, many more than the 1980's. Tower Hamlets is largely a ghetto/slum, so much of the depravation has not gone away.

  • It is incredible how London has changed over the last 40 years. (Even over the last 20 years). Not all for the better either. Fascinating look at the 1960's. Must have been a great place to be in those days, unlike the shithole so much of London is now.

  • Great film, can't wait for it to come out on DVD.

Very sad to look at all the locations in this film which are long gone now. Also James Mason RIP :(

I first saw this as a child in the 80's. The bit with the tramps drinking meths and fighting stayed with me all these years... but for the grace of God etc.

  • excellent. modern docu-makers take heed: the lovely sound of silence overlaying pictures that need no commentary.

  • Superb film.

Typical of the 1960's Labour councils.New is good.Old is bad.

  • But that's the point isn't it? At the time it was deemed to be in the "poor's" interests to build the 'brave new world' of new housing, as is displayed in the commentary at the end. It's only in retrospect that we mourn the passing of much remnants of Victoriana that were swept away to make development space available in overcrowded and 'slum' areas. At the time, it was unquestionably often the right thing to do.
