I take 1000mg of Niacin per my doctors advice and it's done wonders for my cholesterol. The flushing goes down after you start taking it regularly and it's no big deal.
i took regular niacin and i had a flush and got reddish the first and second times with 500 mg then 1000 mg. and the third time took 5000 mg and did'nt have any flush?
There is one other way to lower Lp(a). Increasing saturated fat intake lowers Lp(a). By moving to a low-carb diet high in saturated fat in addition to niacin, my HDL has gone from 32 to 70. My LDL has gone from 130 to 110 and my triglycerides from 140 to 50.
I've also tried various doses and routines, always under a doctor's supervision since niacin can elevate liver enzymes. I now take 1 gram three times a day and I've taken niacin for over 8 years.
I have been taking 2g of Niacin a day for two months along with a mostly vegetarian, whole food diet. Lost over 30 pounds and dropped over seven medications that I was taking, including cholesterol and high blood pressure meds. Love the flush.
@cricha61 hi, did you drop the meds on your doctors advice or did you just cut them out and start niacin? ( my dad is on lipitor and blood pressure tablets so i am interested on what steps you took in more detail, any info would be great tanks :)
@92758537 u have paranoia problem? You notice it, this is where i can say brain is working better then normal human, u thinking more, u paranoid more and u can catch litlle silly things like u did just now, am i right?
@lay4life Not sure I have a problem with paranoia, I just do seem to notice things others don't and I was just amused by the chairs being set up the way they were and of course it's supposed to be better for the viewer but it really ends up looking silly.
I don't tend to enjoy labels on people and don't think of myself as anything other than a average person, but I do like to watch people and admit to be on my guard with people, but also very genuine and friendly, I do tend to notice things

the "flush" is NOT an allergic reaction, in fact, it's proven that histamines doesn't work against it... only aspirin and blood thinning meds can... anyway, the flush is so beneficial so you wouldn't want to skip it.
mylucidmind: What you had was not a rash or an allergic reaction to niacin, what happens when you take niacin is called a flushing effect, you can get the no flush version of niacin as well so you don't have that reaction.
I use it to treat depression and bipolar disorder, and it works really well.
I take at least 2000 mg every day for my condition and found that it helps with my ability to concentrate & multi-task.
I'm really not sure if it helps with exercise, I do know it is good for you though (So I've heard) & It's a vitamin! But I think I took it too much and got a rash from it.. It finally went away and I haven't taken it since. But I know it does clean out toxins. So that is always good, and thank you very much. I liked the name too! :)
What would a recommended level of Flush Free Niacin be?. my cholesterol was 260 and the doctor told me to take Flush Free Niacin and aspirin or he'd put me on medicines. for three months i've taken 500 mg everyday with aspirin and just got a call from his nurse that ALL my levels are fine! Praise God!!!
The flush is beneficial. Carrrying oxygen to places that haven't seen the same for years and it prevents sludging (a term coined by Dr.A.Hoffer) of blood cells. It's like Buckley's cough syrup...it taste bad but it works. "Taste" being a metaphor.
No you are not having a allergic reaction..LOL. Man, I get red and itchy for a short time but it's great stuff!
Does Sustained Release Niacin give the same benefits as normal Niacin? I've read that No-Flush does not provide the same benefits...How about Sustained Release? Thank you!
Sustained-release is to give you the same benefits of crystalline niacin, but with lessening of the flush. However, research has shown that liver enzymes are affected, so make sure to get a liver function test as you would with statins.
There is also a prescription drug that doesn't stay in the liver as long, and has proven to be a little less dangerous than the over-the-counter sustained-release. It's referred to as "extended-release."
I myself always stay with the crystalline and take 2000 mg at night, before bed with an uncoated aspirin to lessen flush.
My Doctor said statins are poison and she wishes she could put the whole world on Niacin , but the problem is people take it the first time , get the flush , get scared and never take it again. I take 1000mg every night at bed time , after while you build up a tolerance and the flush isn't that intense.
well I have taken 20 grams on a bet. Here I am.There has never been a death attributed to Niacin. NEVER, EVER. The big drug companies DO NOT want u to know this.
My doctor says that taking niacin in LOW doses - i.e., 250 mg to 500 mg per day can spike glucose levels.
I personally don't believe this but she is very adamant about telling me to stop taking my niacin. Is she really right about niacin spiking glucose in low amounts or is she just peddling fear and misinformation?
I took 500 mg with a HUGE plate of spaghetti. 15 minutes later I felt like I had the 2nd worst sunburn of my life. btw the worst sunburn I ever had I lost nearly ALL skin on my face and shoulders. After pounding a gallon of water and scratching every inch of my body I shook like mad for 10 minutes. An hour later I felt wonderful though. I guess it was like rolling in hot coals and leaving all the bad stuff behind cuz I peed sooo dark yellow even though I wasn't dehydrated at all. Cool Stuff
i didn't know it lowers cholesterol, i've been taking it for awhile. you learn something everyday. but i do know that the flushing or itchiness can be subsided if you eat a big meal before you take it
yeah. Niacin is practically the wonder drug... it does a lot more than lower cholesterol; for one, it releases natural steroids into your body, helps use stored fat to create energy faster, etc. etc. I love this stuff... even though the burning is a wee bit uncomfortable =P
if i pass this random piss test this week with these niacians i will blow a cactus

I always feel jittery during the flush. Is that the elevated blood sugar?
Diabetics should be wary of it.

Why not just take a "No Flush" niacin? Or take regular niacin preceded by a baby asprin and have no flush?
