what the hell is the matter with these little bitty microcars that can't get better than 40 mpg?!!? we had geo metro's and ford aspire's 20 years ago that were even bigger than these and they could get 50. now we have all this fancy technology and what has it done to improve mileage? i would absolutely LOVE to have a tiny car like this but it's gotta get at least 50 or 55 mpg to make it worth it. you can get 37 to 40 mpg with a compact that seats 5.
To bad they don't offer a package to remove the rear seat & with just parcel shelf (also knocking $500 off for such a swap out). I don't hate my friends enough to cram them in the back of that and would prefer the truck space & discount.
Just brand them Toyota like in the rest of the word and sell them plain jane with an under 1 liter engine and it's gonna be a smart people'scar- vw -voiture du peuple .
@fishshooter75 Sure but it only has three seats - no real storage space to speak of == a much smaller engine , and too expensive for its size , besides the 25 % figure is just imagination .More like 5% in real life & the back seat in the Fit is cavernous .
Actually -- could somebody tell me why anyone would choose this car over a Honda Fit .The price is too close to argue about . Utility wise this little Scion cant even hold a candle to the Fit .
And the cute ugly thing is growing old .If they were selling for $10 grand it might be worth considering -- I think they'll be gathering dust in the dealer lots .-- Even the mileage is nothing extraordinary Toyota really pooched the puppy on this one .
I don't see Scion's logic in pricing such a small vehicle on par with the "monstrous" Toyota Corolla. I think Scion once again missed the mark trying to sell to "urbanites" who will take their hard-to-come-by money and shop elsewhere.
for the price id rather have a hyundai accent that seats five and has alot of cargo space... not to say its a bad looking car i just dont see the broad appeal of this vehicle... i guess its for the same people who spend too much money on smart cars too
$16k? 37mpg? FAIL! what dumbass would buy this. how about $10k and 47mpg then you might get ppl interested. Make it under $10k and 57mpg then you'll get ppl lined up to buy them.
The Prius "CVT" has ONE gear. Toyota hushes up about this "CVT" and lets people think it has what engineers refer to as a CVT (a gearbox with an infinite or very high number of gear ratios).
.
What type of "CVT" does the IQ have?
If it does in fact have a true CVT, it may be the first commercial auto with one.
I'm all for unique, high quality small cars. It's about time we get them here in the states. But I'm really at a loss with this IQ. Comparably speaking, it's expensive, the highway fuel economy is worth that some larger cars, and the styling is typical toyota charmless. I have a hard time seeing a salesman selling me on the IQ over the Fiesta, Accent, Rio, Sonic, etc, etc.
cannot wait for the iq to become avail for sale. I have a smart, but i got a kid now and need a third seat. People wonder who would buy this car? me. I live in sf. I commute everyday to palo alto. With a regula car it would take me 50 min of driving and 30-45min to find a park when i got back home. With the smart i never had to look for a parking spot. I wonder how the iq will do with the extra foot. The car is small and has little power, so great mpg. All helps compensating for my large....
@LeadHammer So it makes it a bargain? A brand new Jetta starts at 16k and that has 4 doors and a trunk, and a tad bit more bhp. You really have to be out of your mind to spend this amount of money on a bucket of crap. Mind as well just buy a moped, save a lot more money on gas and it will go just as fast.
@pretty00lights This car was made for big European and Asian cities. In Rome you can park it (and the Smart too) perpendicular to the curb, meaning that you can park two microcars at a spot used by one "normal" car. The mere fact that this car is small does not mean it should be cheap. It is made for cities where you have to choose between a moped or a car like this, the Jetta is just too large. If you live in Texas this is not a car for you.
@LeadHammer I agree with what your saying. However, slapping on a Scion badge means they are going to sell it in the US. And we all know small cars over here are not what is in. I dont see how anyone in the US will buy this car with such an outrageous price tag.
@pretty00lights Depends on where you live. Can be quite "in" in San Francisco, for example. I would consider it if they offered it as a two-seater, because by law I am not allowed to put a child in a front seat if there are rear seats, and there is no way I am putting my child on the rear seat of this box, too close to the rear hatch, and no airbag would help in case of collision.
It is one of the best looking city cars on the market, has a practical interior and should be a blast to drive with 98 hp and its low curb weight. I doubt it will be popular in the US, but a great car nonetheless.
I just got one, I freaking love it.

@milwrightman. It gets 25% better gas mileage than the Fit does in town, where it is designed for. It's a lot nicer and more stylish, in my opinion.

I see no point for this car, gas mileage is not stellar, derivative styling (Smart), 4 seater?.. gimme a break.
Perfect death trap in case of accident.
