Date lines are fun. The first time I travelled to the US was Friday 13th, July 2001. We arrived a day later, Friday 13th. I asked at checkin if they'd be playing airliner disaster movies on the way. :-) The cool part was, I took that days paper with me to the US, and it was still that days paper when I got to the US.
You've got to love those Midwest thunderstorms! At least you were able to see the Indianapolis Motor Speedway as you landed in Indy...the place looks great from the air and even better from the grandstands!
Your Thunderstorms are the best! They put our puny storms in NZ to shame. In two trips to Indy I hadn't seen the speedway, until we came through the clouds - and there it was, right in front of us. That place is HUGE!
They can get nasty for sure. In all my years of living and flying into Indy I've never seen IMS from the air....always on the opposite side of the plane or on a different flight approach. I'd love to see the place from the air the morning of the '500', that would be awesome! Come back to our fair city often, we Hoosiers love hosting guests!
Small planes + pilot instructor cost about $NZ190 per hour to hire in NZ. Very reasonable. If the IMS area isn't flight restricted, go for it!! Even better, ask if they'll fly no-door so theres nothing in the way of your camera. I don't know Indy flight regs, but here in NZ they allow no-door scenic flights in small planes if you ask nicely and they know you. I love Indy city!! Walking down the Canal, visiting Imax and eating lunch at the Cajun grill at the Circle theatre food court. Yummy!
